Heavy monsoon rains claim 17 lives across Punjab

Heavy monsoon rains continued to lash several parts of Punjab during the past 24 hours, causing urban flooding, traffic disruptions, power outages and loss of life. Authorities remained on high alert as widespread rainfall affected both central and northern districts, prompting emergency response teams to intensify drainage operations across the province.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Gujranwala recorded the highest rainfall with 245 millimetres, making it one of the hardest-hit cities. Lahore received 123 millimetres of rain, while Sialkot recorded 139 millimetres, Mandi Bahauddin 138 millimetres, Narowal 117 millimetres and Gujrat 95 millimetres. Other districts also experienced significant rainfall, including Hafizabad with 85 millimetres, Chakwal 70 millimetres, Okara 64 millimetres, Jhang 35 millimetres, Layyah 33 millimetres and Jhelum 32 millimetres.

The PDMA said at least 17 people have died in rain-related incidents since the start of the monsoon season. Twelve of the fatalities occurred after houses and other structures collapsed during heavy rainfall. Two people lost their lives after being struck by lightning, while three others died from electrocution caused by rain-related electrical hazards.

The continuous downpour led to waterlogging in many urban areas, disrupting normal life and slowing traffic on major roads. Several low-lying neighborhoods remained inundated for hours, creating difficulties for commuters and residents. In Gujranwala, the Shamsi Underpass was completely submerged, forcing motorists to use alternative routes as traffic through the area became impossible.

Lahore also witnessed widespread water accumulation on roads in several localities, including Johar Town, Township, Ferozepur Road, Multan Road, Samanabad, Gulshan-i-Ravi, Model Town, Lakshmi Chowk and surrounding areas. Motorists struggled to navigate flooded streets, while residents in various neighborhoods reported prolonged electricity outages following the heavy rain.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) said emergency teams remained active throughout the province to clear drains and remove standing water. Officials said drainage operations were continuing in 41 districts, while monitoring of rivers, dams and barrages had been intensified due to the ongoing monsoon spell.

In Gujrat, WASA deployed 20 emergency teams across three operational zones to ensure the timely drainage of rainwater. Officials said major roads remained open and traffic continued to move despite the heavy rainfall.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions and warned people not to enter canals, rivers or rainwater drains, saying such areas become extremely dangerous during the monsoon season.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has assured foreign investors of full government support, saying Pakistan is ready to facilitate investment and provide opportunities across different sectors. Naqvi made the remarks during a meeting with British House of Lords member Lord Zamir Choudrey in Islamabad on Saturday. The interior minister said Pakistan has significant investment potential and that the government wants to create an environment where foreign investors can operate with greater confidence. He assured investors that all possible facilities would be provided to support their business activities in the country. The discussion also covered regional peace and stability. Naqvi said Pakistan was continuing its efforts to promote lasting peace in the region. He expressed optimism that the country’s diplomatic and peace initiatives would produce positive results. Lord Zamir Choudrey appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to contribute to regional stability. He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts to promote peace. Choudrey said the government’s policies were helping create new opportunities for investment in Pakistan. The meeting comes as Islamabad seeks to strengthen economic ties with international partners while promoting Pakistan as an attractive destination for foreign investment. Pakistan has also been increasing cooperation with China on security and counterterrorism matters. Earlier this month, Naqvi met Chinese Minister of State for Public Security and Special Service Bureau chief Ling Zhifeng at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in internal security. Their discussions included border management, illegal immigration and efforts against drug trafficking. Meanwhile, security concerns surrounding Chinese nationals working in Pakistan remain a major issue. The CPEC Secretariat has decided to purchase a new bulletproof vehicle costing Rs95 million to strengthen security arrangements for Chinese citizens. The vehicle will reportedly be a 3,500cc Toyota Land Cruiser. It will be added to the existing fleet of security vehicles used for the protection of Chinese nationals. Government departments have also acquired or are seeking additional bulletproof vehicles and helicopters for security purposes. Officials have said Chinese citizens face significant security risks in Pakistan. As a result, they are generally restricted from travelling in ordinary, non-bulletproof vehicles. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the protection of Chinese nationals is a key responsibility of the Pakistani government. The purchase also highlights the security challenges linked to major China-Pakistan economic projects. The government is balancing efforts to attract more foreign investment with measures aimed at improving the security of international investors and workers.

Elizabeth Olsen makes rare appearance with newborn in Los Angeles

Elizabeth Olsen has made a rare public appearance with her newborn child in Los Angeles, weeks after reports emerged that the actress had quietly welcomed her first baby. The WandaVision star was spotted taking a walk in Los Angeles on August 15. She appeared to be enjoying a relaxed outing with her newborn son while being accompanied by her partner, Robbie Arnett. Olsen kept a low profile during the outing. She wore a wide-brimmed hat and appeared to take precautions to keep the baby protected from the sun. Arnett was seen walking alongside her as the family spent time outdoors. The appearance comes around two months after reports surfaced that Olsen was expecting her first child. The actress had not publicly announced her pregnancy at the time. Neither Olsen nor Arnett has officially confirmed details surrounding the baby’s arrival. The couple has also kept information about the child’s name, gender and birth date private. The latest photographs are therefore being viewed as the strongest public indication that the couple has welcomed their first child. Olsen has previously spoken about the possibility of becoming a mother. In a 2021 conversation with SiriusXM, she discussed the challenge of balancing her acting career with the possibility of having children. The actress also recalled speaking with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about how pregnancy could affect her professional commitments while working in the entertainment industry. In December 2025, Olsen reportedly reflected on motherhood and marriage during a podcast appearance. She said she had once been uncertain about whether she wanted to get married or have children. Her relationship with Arnett eventually influenced how she viewed those possibilities. Olsen and Arnett have maintained a notably private relationship. The couple began dating in 2017 and became engaged in 2019. They later married privately before the COVID-19 pandemic, with Olsen eventually confirming the marriage during interviews. The couple has generally avoided putting their personal life in the spotlight. They have preferred spending private time together rather than frequently appearing at public events.
