Carlos Aragón Gil de la Serna, visited the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI) and held a meeting with RCCI President Usman Shaukat to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral economic, trade and cultural relations between Pakistan and Spain. He said Spain offers important opportunities for Pakistani exporters, particularly in textiles and agro-based products, while Pakistan can benefit from Spanish expertise in modern agriculture, precision farming, irrigation, mechanization, greenhouse technology and water management. The discussion assumes added significance in light of recent Pakistan–Spain consultations regarding the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Agriculture. Pakistan has identified rice, ethanol, potatoes and maize as products with potential for increased exports to the Spanish market. Spain has also acknowledged Pakistan’s favourable trade balance, with textiles being among Pakistan’s major exports to Spain. On this occasion, Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan highlighted RCCI’s important role in supporting the government on economic and budget-related matters and appreciated the Chamber’s contribution towards strengthening Pakistan’s economic foundations. He said Pakistan is moving forward across various sectors, particularly information technology, and stressed the need to further promote investment, innovation and entrepreneurship. Traffic police said vehicle entry passes for the processions will be available from August 17 to 20. Applicants must submit the vehicle’s registration card, their CNIC, and two recent photographs to obtain a pass. Drivers must also carry the original vehicle registration card and CNIC with them during the procession. Those seeking vehicle passes can contact the designated central office for further information and registration. The traffic police will introduce alternative traffic routes and make diversions at different points during the processions. Additional personnel will also be deployed to manage traffic and guide motorists. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel on procession routes and follow instructions from traffic police officials. Authorities have urged motorists to cooperate with traffic management teams to ensure smooth movement and reduce inconvenience for commuters across the city.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi visited Hangu on Thursday to meet the families of police officers who lost their lives in the recent terrorist attack on Khazana Check Post. The chief minister offered Fateha for the deceased officers and prayed for the elevation of their ranks. He paid tribute to the policemen, calling them national heroes who sacrificed their lives while protecting the country and its people. Afridi assured the bereaved families that the provincial government would continue to support them through the difficult period. He pledged comprehensive financial and institutional assistance and said the government would use all available resources to ensure the long-term welfare of the martyrs’ families. After returning to Peshawar, the chief minister chaired a high-level meeting to assess the law and order situation across the province. Provincial Information Minister, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Home Affairs, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Inspector General of Police and other senior officials attended the meeting. Officials briefed the meeting on the security situation, particularly in the southern districts, and discussed recent developments, ongoing operations and emerging security challenges. Afridi directed the authorities to utilise all available resources to combat terrorism and establish lasting peace in the province. He stressed the need for a coordinated, intelligence-based strategy to strengthen public security and effectively counter militant threats. Meanwhile, police personnel killed in Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Hangu were laid to rest after funeral prayers at Police Lines Hangu. The ceremony took place with full state honours and was attended by senior civil and police officials, including Police Training College Hangu Commandant Shaukat Abbas, Deputy Commissioner Basir Ali Rahman and local elders.

    199 polling stations set for LA-17 election

    BAGH: A total of 199 polling stations have been established for the election in LA-17 Bagh-4 Haveli, with 10 security personnel to be deployed at each polling station. According to a notification issued by the Returning Officer’s office, 117,514 registered voters will be eligible to cast their ballots in the constituency. Polling will take place across 12 union councils and a town committee. Election officials have also completed arrangements for transporting election materials to remote areas, including Bheedi, Halla and Kairni. Haveli has been divided into 16 sectors to facilitate the distribution of election materials and manage polling arrangements. Of the 199 polling stations, 50 have been classified as sensitive and 25 as highly sensitive. Ten security personnel will be deployed at every polling station to maintain security during polling. Preparations have also been completed for the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, with polling scheduled in four constituencies across Bagh and Haveli districts of the Poonch Division. The transportation of election materials to polling stations is currently underway. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhanoti have been postponed. The upcoming electoral contest also features three former prime ministers among the candidates. Former AJK prime ministers Sardar Attique Khan and Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who lead the Muslim Conference and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party respectively, are contesting the elections. AJK Prime Minister Faisal Rathore is also taking part in the electoral contest. Authorities have stepped up security and logistical preparations ahead of polling to ensure a peaceful voting process across the constituency.

    Nationwide petrol pump shutdown announced

    The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association has announced a nationwide shutdown of petrol stations from tonight after negotiations with the government failed to resolve the dispute over daily changes in petroleum prices. Association General Secretary Nauman Butt said talks between the Petroleum Minister and petrol pump owners ended without reaching any agreement. He said the association raised concerns over the government’s decision to revise petroleum product prices on a daily basis. However, the discussions did not produce a solution acceptable to both sides. The association has now decided to close petrol pumps across the country as a protest against the unresolved issue. The shutdown announcement has raised concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supply and difficulties for consumers if the strike continues. Further developments are expected as the government and petrol pump representatives may hold additional talks to resolve the matter and restore normal fuel services. The government had earlier decided to introduce a daily petroleum pricing mechanism in view of the deteriorating regional security situation. Under the new policy, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will announce petroleum prices on a daily basis without requiring approval from the prime minister or the federal government. However, fuel prices announced on Fridays will remain unchanged on Saturdays and Sundays. The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association (APPPA) has rejected the petroleum price deregulation policy and urged the government to reconsider its decision. Association Chairman Nauman Ali Butt said the burden created by the new pricing system should not be placed on petrol pump owners. He stressed that all stakeholders should be consulted before finalising fuel prices with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Butt added that nearly 15,000 petrol pump owners across Pakistan have expressed serious concerns over the new policy and called on the government to address their reservations before implementing the system.
