Sibol nails maiden Asian Games esports medal with Pokemon Unite bronze

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines scored a breakthrough esports medal at the Asian Games as Sibol clinched a Pokemon Unite bronze at the Aichi Sky Expo in Japan on Sunday, September 27.

The team of Lance David, Ducke Harnold Leoncio, Lawrence Anthony Gatmaitan, Kim Rey Salazar, Robert Jon Mempin, and Michael Vaughn Ocio still secured a bronze despite a 2-0 loss to Indonesia in the semifinals.

Sibol built a commanding lead in the first game but ran out of steam, surrendering the opener and failing to recover as it fell to a sweep in the best-of-three affair.

Nevertheless, it was still a commendable result as the Philippines won its first-ever esports medal in the Asian Games, which included esports as a demonstration competition in 2018 then adopted it as a medal event in 2023.

“I’m still in awe because this is the first time and I’m really happy for the boys because this is something they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives, that they were able to bring home a medal to the Philippines,” said Sibol head coach Albert Camp.

Sibol topped Group A with 4 points then scored a 2-0 win over Hong Kong in the quarterfinals to assure itself of a podium finish.

Another Sibol squad is guaranteed a medal as the Honor of Kings crew of Golden Hart Dajao, Justine Ritchie Tan, Charles Roman Esguerra, Dragon Hart Dajao, Jhon Mike Tungol, and Chammy Paul Nazarrea advanced to the semifinals following a 2-0 victory over South Korea.

Joe Root likely to return as England test captain

England’s star batter Joe Root is reportedly set to make a return as captain of the England men’s Test cricket team. According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering handing Root the leadership role once again following the expected retirement of current Test captain Ben Stokes. The reports suggest that Root could officially take charge of the team ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan. If appointed, he would lead the side during a crucial period as England prepares for a demanding international schedule, including the highly anticipated Ashes series next year. Joe Root is one of England’s most accomplished cricketers and previously served as the team’s Test captain from 2017 to 2022. During his tenure, he led England in a record number of Test matches and played a significant role in guiding the team through several memorable victories. Although his captaincy ended after a difficult run of results, Root continued to be one of the team’s most consistent performers with the bat and remains a key figure in England’s Test setup. Reports indicate that the England management views Root as the ideal candidate to provide stability and experience during this transitional phase. His extensive leadership background, calm temperament, and outstanding batting record make him a strong choice to guide the team until at least the Ashes series scheduled for next year. The reports add that he is expected to remain captain through that prestigious contest before the ECB considers a long-term leadership plan. Meanwhile, another significant change is also expected within England’s coaching staff. Former England opener Marcus Trescothick is likely to be appointed as the interim head coach of the Test team. According to the reports, Trescothick could assume coaching responsibilities during the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. Trescothick has already gained valuable coaching experience with the England national side and is regarded as a respected figure within English cricket. His appointment as interim head coach would ensure continuity and familiarity for the players during a period of transition. Working alongside an experienced leader such as Joe Root could help England maintain stability both on and off the field.   The potential appointments of Root and Trescothick come at a time when England is preparing for an important phase in the international cricket calendar. The Pakistan Test series is expected to provide an early opportunity for the new leadership group to establish its approach before attention turns to the Ashes, one of cricket’s most celebrated rivalries.   Neither the England and Wales Cricket Board nor the team management has officially confirmed these appointments. However, British media reports suggest that an announcement could be made in the near future if discussions proceed as expected. If confirmed, Joe Root’s return as Test captain would mark the beginning of a new chapter for England’s red-ball team. His experience, leadership qualities, and exceptional batting ability are expected to play a vital role in helping England navigate a period of change while aiming for success against Pakistan and in the Ashes series.

FIFA adviser Carlos Cordeiro quits over World Cup rights sale proposal

ZURICH: A major controversy has emerged within FIFA after senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned in protest over a proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup, warning that the move could damage the long-term future of global football. According to international media reports, Cordeiro stepped down from his role as senior adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino after voicing strong opposition to the plan. He described the proposal as being against the interests of football and FIFA’s 211 member associations. The controversial proposal involves the creation of a new subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, reportedly valued at around $20 billion. Under the plan, the company would manage the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup and other major tournaments, with up to 20% of its shares potentially being sold to outside investors. Cordeiro stressed that he had no role in developing the proposal and made it clear that he strongly opposed it. He argued that FIFA is already in a strong financial position, holding billions of dollars in reserves and carrying no debt. He questioned the logic of selling a permanent stake in one of football’s most valuable assets for an estimated $4.2 billion, saying such a decision could have lasting consequences for the sport. The proposal is expected to be reviewed by FIFA’s 211 member associations, which have until September 19 to decide whether to support the plan. Cordeiro also warned that introducing external investors into the commercial structure of the World Cup could weaken FIFA’s long-term control over its flagship tournament and create challenges for future generations of the game. The resignation has intensified debate over the future management of football’s biggest global event, with critics urging FIFA to protect the World Cup’s commercial independence while supporters argue that new investment could unlock fresh opportunities for the sport. The outcome of the upcoming vote is expected to shape the future financial direction of world football.

Chelsea complete £52 million signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace

Chelsea have signed France international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal reported to be worth 52 million pounds, or roughly 69 million dollars. Lacroix has put pen to paper on a six year contract with the Blues and will now join his new teammates for pre season training. The 26 year old has earned seven caps for France and featured for his country at the recent World Cup. Speaking after the move was confirmed, Lacroix said he felt proud to become part of a club with Chelsea’s history and winning tradition. He said his conversation with the club’s manager convinced him they share the same vision and ambition, adding that the quality of the squad and the resources around the club make winning trophies a realistic goal he is eager to help achieve. Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 and went on to make 98 appearances for the club. During his time at Selhurst Park, he helped Palace win the FA Cup, the UEFA Conference League and the Community Shield. The defender becomes the latest addition to new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s rebuilding effort this close season. Alonso has already overseen a British record 117 million pound deal for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers and a 47 million pound move for Atalanta right back Marco Palestra. Winger Geovany Quenda and forward Emmanuel Emegha have also joined the club, completing transfers that were initially agreed last year. Chelsea have further been linked with moves for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. Alonso took charge of the club on July 1 and is tasked with reviving a Chelsea side that finished a disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season, a result that left the club without European football for the upcoming campaign.

Carlos Brathwaite applauds Babar Azam’s captaincy

Former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has praised Pakistan captain Babar Azam for his outstanding leadership, describing his captaincy as a tactical masterclass during the ongoing Test against the Caribbean side. Speaking during his analysis of the match, Brathwaite highlighted Babar’s calm decision-making and ability to read the game under pressure. He said the Pakistan skipper showed excellent awareness by slowing the pace of play at key moments and making smart field changes that unsettled the West Indies batters. According to Brathwaite, one of Babar’s best tactical moves was the field placement against experienced batter Roston Chase. The carefully designed field forced Chase to rethink his natural game and prevented him from scoring freely. “Babar’s field settings kept Roston Chase under constant pressure,” Brathwaite noted. “He had to keep adjusting his approach, and eventually that pressure led to a mistake.” The former all-rounder added that Babar’s leadership reflected a high standard of captaincy, saying every move appeared to be planned according to the match situation rather than following a fixed strategy. Brathwaite believes the Pakistan captain demonstrated maturity, patience and tactical intelligence, qualities that helped his team remain competitive during crucial stages of the contest. Meanwhile, the Test match remains finely balanced. West Indies reached 103-6 in their second innings and currently hold a lead of 60 runs, setting up an intriguing finish over the remaining sessions. Pakistan will now look to capitalize on any opportunity to wrap up the innings quickly, while the West Indies hope to extend their advantage with the lower order. Brathwaite’s glowing assessment has once again placed the spotlight on Babar Azam’s leadership, with many cricket fans praising the Pakistan captain for his strategic approach and composure in high-pressure situations.
