Pakistan made a dream start to the ITF Masters World Team Championship by defeating the United States 3-0 in their opening Group match in Lisbon, Portugal.

The convincing victory gives Pakistan an early boost in the prestigious men’s 45+ tournament, where more than 300 players from 30 countries are competing for top honours.

Led by an experienced squad, Pakistan dominated both the singles and doubles contests to complete a clean sweep against the American side.

Former Davis Cup star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi set the tone with a composed performance in the opening singles match. The Pakistan Tennis Federation president defeated Wojtek Brytek in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, handing Pakistan a valuable early lead.

The second singles encounter proved to be the highlight of the tie. Pakistan’s top-ranked player Aqeel Khan battled through a tense three-set contest against John Chesworth. After dropping the opening set, Aqeel fought back with determination to claim a hard-earned 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, sealing Pakistan’s overall triumph.

The worst-affected districts include Abbottabad, Swat, Buner, Khyber, Lower Chitral, Lower Dir, Mansehra, Mardan, Peshawar, Shangla, Swabi, Upper Dir, and Upper Kohistan. Rescue teams and local authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas where additional rainfall may increase the risk of flooding and landslides. The PDMA confirmed that it is working closely with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other relevant government agencies to coordinate emergency response efforts. Rescue operations, relief distribution, and damage assessments are currently underway to ensure that affected families receive immediate assistance. Authorities have instructed district administrations to accelerate relief activities and provide essential support, including temporary shelter, food, medical care, and other emergency services to displaced residents. Officials are also assessing infrastructure damage and identifying areas requiring urgent rehabilitation. The recent spell of heavy rainfall serves as another reminder of the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather events in Pakistan. Experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure to reduce the impact of floods and severe storms on vulnerable communities.     Goods transporters announce indefinite strike

    The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance has announced an indefinite nationwide strike after talks with the federal and Sindh governments failed to resolve their demands. Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan made the announcement at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, saying transporters would keep their vehicles off the roads from August 8 until the government formally accepted their demands through official notifications. Awan said a meeting held on Friday included senior officials from both the federal and Sindh governments, including the communications minister, communications secretary, National Highway Authority chairman, inspector general of motorways, Karachi commissioner, transport secretary, excise secretary and senior traffic officials. However, the talks failed to produce an agreement. He said the alliance would observe a peaceful wheel-jam strike by parking trucks and trailers instead of blocking roads. However, he warned that transporters could move their vehicles onto roads if authorities tried to intimidate or arrest their leaders during the protest. According to Awan, vehicles carrying import and export containers will continue operating until August 10 to allow cargo already in transit to reach its destinations. The transporters have also formed a committee to negotiate with the government. Awan warned that if their demands were not accepted within two days, the protesters would march towards the governor houses in all provinces. He said the committee would not negotiate with officials who had previously made commitments to transporters but failed to fulfil them. Awan also called for the resignation of the federal petroleum minister, Punjab’s transport and mass transit minister and the Punjab senior minister. Highlighting the financial pressure on the transport sector, he claimed that a single trailer pays around Rs2.4 million in annual toll taxes while transporters also face e-challans, adding to their difficulties. He warned that the ongoing dispute could negatively affect the national economy and urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis. Other transport leaders, including Malik Sher Khan, Ghulam Yasin and Nadeem Akhtar Arain, also attended the press conference. Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association urged the Ministry of Petroleum to review the mechanism used to determine fuel prices. In a letter sent to the petroleum minister on August 7, the association’s vice chairman expressed concern over delays in implementing agreements reached between the government and petrol pump owners.

    Mohsen Rezaei takes Iran’s top security post

    Iran has appointed veteran Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), placing a prominent security figure in a senior position at a sensitive time for the country. Rezaei, 71, replaces Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr as secretary of the council. Zolqadr has instead been appointed as a political adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. It is formally chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian and includes senior military, intelligence and government officials. Rezaei brings decades of military and political experience to the position. He joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and became its commander in 1981, when he was only 27. He remained at the helm of the IRGC for 16 years. Much of his tenure coincided with the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. During that period, he oversaw the development of the organisation’s land, naval and air capabilities. After leaving the IRGC command, Rezaei remained an influential figure within Iran’s political and security establishment. He later served for more than two decades as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. He also entered electoral politics and repeatedly sought the presidency of Iran. From 2021 to 2023, he served as vice president for economic affairs under former President Ebrahim Raisi. Rezaei holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Tehran, although much of his career has been focused on military, security and political affairs. His relationship with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is another significant factor behind his new appointment. Rezaei was named a military adviser to Khamenei after the latter assumed the supreme leadership earlier this year. Khamenei also issued a decree appointing Rezaei as his representative on the SNSC. The decree highlighted Rezaei’s extensive military experience, particularly his role during the Iran-Iraq war. During the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, Rezaei has frequently made public statements on security and foreign policy issues. He has expressed strong opposition to concessions in negotiations with Washington and has repeatedly taken a hard-line position on Iran’s security interests. His appointment therefore places an experienced IRGC commander at the centre of Iran’s national security decision-making structure. Rezaei’s political journey began even before the Islamic Revolution. As a teenager, he became involved in opposition activities against Iran’s Pahlavi monarchy. He was arrested by SAVAK, the Shah’s security service, in 1973.

High-speed diesel prices had reached a record level of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, after rising from Rs281 per litre following the escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran. Similarly, petrol prices had climbed to Rs458.41 per litre during the same period after starting from around Rs266 per litre in early March. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would be adjusted more frequently, including possible daily revisions, due to rapid changes in international oil markets. The government assigned the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of determining fuel prices based on global trends. The decision to introduce daily fuel price adjustments faced opposition from the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which raised concerns and indicated that it may consider a protest strategy. Petrol remains one of the most widely used fuels in Pakistan, mainly powering private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport vehicles.
