Alex Eala’s finest US Open run ends as skid vs friend Iva Jovic continues

MANILA, Philippines – The third time, unfortunately, did not prove to be the charm for Alex Eala.

Eala remained winless against American world No. 14 Iva Jovic as she exited the US Open with a stinging 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 loss in the third round at the famed Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York, on Saturday, September 5 (Sunday, September 6, Manila time).

Up 4-2 in the deciding set, the Filipina world No. 18 ran out of steam when it mattered most, sending her finest run in the final Grand Slam of the tennis calendar to a heartbreaking end at the hands of her close friend.

Eala fell to 0-3 against Jovic in their WTA Tour meetings after losing in straight sets in the opening round of the French Open in May and again in the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships in June.

But Eala, at one point, seemed poised for a breakthrough win over Jovic.

Playing in primetime at the world’s largest tennis stadium with a roaring crowd behind her, Eala finally took a set from Jovic and even grabbed a 4-2 lead in the decider.

Jovic, however, dug deep and won four of the last five games to come out triumphant in the 3-hour, 3-minute marathon and arrange a fourth-round clash with compatriot Coco Gauff.

Eala showed some resistance during that stretch as she saved a match point in the 10th game to knot the score at 5-5 before Jovic clinched the next two games.

Seeded 14th, Jovic moved to a second match point with a booming forehand winner, then sealed the victory when Eala dumped a shot into the net — the American falling flat on her back in tears after advancing to the US Open round of 16 for the first time in her career.

“I don’t even know what to say, that felt like a marathon and I felt like I lost my sanity five times over to win that match,” said Jovic.

“But it’s really worth it for this feeling. I’m usually not one to show that many emotions but this one really meant a lot to me so it’s everything to have another match here at the US Open.”

It was a painful exit for Eala as she came oh-so close to matching her best Grand Slam campaign, a fourth-round appearance in the Wimbledon Championships in July where she dethroned Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the third round.

Eala flashed a smile as she thanked the fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but the disappointment of the loss finally sank in as she fought back tears on her way to the dugout.

Still, it was a commendable run for Eala as she surpassed her showing last year, when she fell to Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the second round after making history as the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam main draw match in the Open era following an upset of Denmark’s Clara Tauson.

This year, Eala swatted aside USA’s Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2, to open her campaign, and then made quick work of Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova, 6-1, 6-4. – Rappler.com

Harvey Barnes signs long-term contract extension a…

Harvey Barnes has committed his future to Newcastle United after signing a new “long-term” contract with the Premier League club on Monday, fending off interest from Aston Villa . Barnes had two years remaining on his previous deal, but Newcastle convinced the England international to extend his stay at St James’ Park ahead of the new season . The 28-year-old winger had been linked with a move to Aston Villa, who are seeking new forwards after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea . “It feels great to sign this new contract so early before the new season starts. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I’m delighted to continue that,” Barnes said . “When I first joined the club I quickly learned what a special place it is, but after three years here I know that even more. I love everything about it the city, the stadium, the people  and I’m really happy extending my time here.” Barnes, who joined Newcastle from Leicester in 2023, enjoyed a fine campaign last season with 16 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions . He has now scored 30 goals in 120 career appearances for the Magpies . The winger’s decision is a major boost for manager Eddie Howe, particularly after Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali’s switch to Tottenham earlier in the close-season . Newcastle are also hoping to keep captain Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal’s interest in the Brazilian midfielder . Howe saluted Barnes’s consistency over his three years on Tyneside . “Harvey’s new contract is very well deserved and a reflection of the work he’s put in and the quality he’s shown throughout his three years at Newcastle United,” Howe said . “Harvey is a player who has consistently produced special moments at vital times for the team. Harvey has vast experience at the highest level but we believe there is still more to come.” The extension signals Newcastle’s determination to retain their core players as they prepare for another campaign competing on multiple fronts, including European football .

AMSTELVEEN: England produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat India 4-2 in a thrilling Pool D encounter at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Stadium on Monday. India appeared to be in control for much of the opening half and went into the interval with a 2-1 advantage. However, England completely changed the momentum after the break, scoring three unanswered goals across the third and fourth quarters to secure a memorable victory. The result extended England’s perfect start to the tournament. They now have two wins from two matches and sit at the top of Pool D, strengthening their position as one of the teams to watch in the competition. For India, the defeat continued a long wait for a World Cup victory against England. Their last win over the English side at the global tournament came back in 1994. India had started their campaign confidently, beating Wales 3-1. Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners, while Sanjay added another goal from a set-piece to give his side an encouraging opening victory. England, meanwhile, began the World Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory over Pakistan before carrying that momentum into Monday’s clash. India remain second in Pool D with three points. Their next match will be a highly anticipated encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan, while England will meet Wales in their next group fixture. India’s hockey team are still searching for a second World Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in 1975. They endured a disappointing campaign in the 2023 edition on home soil, finishing ninth. Elsewhere, France and Malaysia played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in Pool B. France’s Timothée Clement scored late in the final quarter to rescue a point. In the women’s tournament, Argentina defeated Germany 3-2, while the Netherlands beat Australia 4-2.

France have appointed former midfielder and Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane as their new head coach, beginning a new era for the national team. The French Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Tuesday. The 54-year-old succeeds Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after 14 years in charge. Zidane’s first major challenge will be to build on France’s strong squad and prepare the team for the next international cycle. Tim Seifert’s 72 powers Manchester to maiden Hundred title

LONDON: New Zealand batter Tim Seifert produced a sensational display of power hitting as Manchester Super Giants chased down 159 against Trent Rockets to win their maiden men’s Hundred title by five wickets at Lord’s on Sunday. Seifert’s explosive 72 off just 38 balls transformed the chase and put Manchester in control before Liam Dawson held his nerve during a dramatic final over to complete a memorable victory. The Super Giants appeared to be cruising before the Rockets launched a late fightback. With Manchester needing only three runs from the final nine balls, Mohammad Amir struck twice in successive deliveries, removing Heinrich Klaasen and Michael Bracewell. Ben Sanderson then delivered two consecutive dot balls, leaving Manchester needing three runs from three deliveries. Dawson responded in emphatic fashion. The experienced batter launched the next delivery over the mid-wicket boundary for six, sealing victory with two balls still remaining and sparking celebrations among the Manchester camp. Earlier, Seifert had almost single-handedly shifted the momentum of the final. The right-hander attacked the Rockets’ bowling from the outset, smashing seven sixes and four fours in a breathtaking innings. The Rockets briefly thought they had removed the danger man when Seifert was on 33. Finn Allen produced a spectacular effort near the boundary, but the catch was ruled out after Allen’s foot touched the rope before he completed the attempt. Seifert continued his assault and eventually equalled Will Jacks’ record for the highest individual score in a men’s Hundred final. His performance capped an outstanding tournament. Seifert finished as the competition’s second-highest run-scorer, behind Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, accumulating 394 runs at an average just below 50. For Manchester Super Giants, the triumph ended years of frustration. The Old Trafford-based franchise, previously known as Manchester Originals, had reached two men’s finals before Sunday but failed to lift the trophy, including a defeat by Trent Rockets in 2022. The Rockets, meanwhile, were left to rue a missed opportunity after topping the men’s table and earning a direct place in the final. They had also hoped to make history by becoming the first franchise to win both the men’s and women’s Hundred titles in the same season. Instead, it was Manchester’s night at Lord’s, with Seifert’s extraordinary hitting and Dawson’s cool finish delivering the franchise its long-awaited first men’s Hundred crown.
