In one case, suspects allegedly posed as both a relative and a visa agent and persuaded a victim to transfer Rs25.86 million. The case has highlighted how scammers can combine apparently familiar identities with urgent requests to make their schemes appear legitimate. Rs54.66m trading fraud uncovered Three suspects were arrested in Faisalabad in connection with alleged online trading fraud and unauthorised access to a company email account. According to investigators, a victim was shown fabricated trading records, digital-wallet balances and purported profit statements to create the impression that substantial returns were being generated. After being persuaded to invest, the victim allegedly lost Rs54.66 million, investigators said. The case demonstrates the growing sophistication of investment scams, where criminals allegedly use manipulated digital information to make fraudulent platforms appear genuine. Multan arrests expose impersonation tactics In Multan, seven suspects were arrested for allegedly posing as relatives, bank employees and individuals claiming to be based in Britain. Officials said victims were approached with various demands, including payments supposedly required for prize money, customs clearance, taxes and visa renewals. Such tactics typically create a sense of urgency, leaving victims with little time to verify the identity of the caller or the authenticity of the demand. Digital evidence now under forensic examination NCCIA investigators are examining the seized devices through forensic analysis. Financial transactions, call records and digital communications are also being reviewed to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other people who may be connected to it. The crackdown comes amid growing concern over online financial fraud in Pakistan. The NCCIA’s own statistics identify financial fraud as a major category of reported cybercrime. The latest arrests underscore a simple but increasingly important warning: an apparently familiar voice, official-looking message or promising investment opportunity may not be what it seems. Authorities are expected to continue the investigation as they trace the alleged network and follow the digital and financial trails left behind.

    A South Korean state-owned energy company has appealed directly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, claiming that prolonged regulatory delays have placed its planned $1 billion investment in Pakistan’s hydropower sector at serious risk. In a letter addressed to the prime minister, Korea South-East Power Co. Ltd. (KOEN) said it had spent nearly a decade developing two run-of-the-river hydropower projects on the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but remains unable to move forward because of unresolved regulatory approvals. The company, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), is developing the 229-megawatt Asrit Kedam and 238-megawatt Kalam Asrit hydropower projects. Together, the projects represent an investment of approximately $1 billion, with the company already investing around $25 million in feasibility studies, surveys, and other preparatory work. According to KOEN, the projects have met all major government requirements since development began in 2016. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, obtained letters of intent from the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO), completed feasibility studies, secured a power generation licence from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), and maintained all required financial guarantees. Despite fulfilling these requirements, KOEN said the tariff determination for the projects has remained pending for nearly three years. The company noted that Nepra conducted a public hearing on its tariff petition in July 2023, but a final decision has yet to be issued. The company said it repeatedly approached Nepra and later appealed to the Nepra Appellate Tribunal, which directed the regulator to decide the tariff matter. However, KOEN claims that the tribunal’s order has still not been implemented. Adding to its concerns, the company said both hydropower projects have been excluded from the draft Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP) 2025–35. KOEN warned that if the revised plan is approved without the projects, its proposed investment could remain stalled indefinitely. In its appeal, the company urged the prime minister to intervene and ensure a timely tariff determination while allowing the projects to continue under Pakistan’s Power Generation Policy 2015, the framework under which the investment was originally made. KOEN also stated that it understands Pakistan’s current surplus electricity generation and is willing to align the commercial operation of the projects with the country’s future energy requirements rather than adding unnecessary capacity. The issue comes as Pakistan and South Korea continue discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties through a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Analysts say resolving regulatory bottlenecks will be crucial for maintaining investor confidence and attracting future foreign direct investment into Pakistan’s energy sector.

The first transaction under the new framework involved a Pakistani citizen based in London who transferred ownership of land located in Dina, Punjab, to a buyer in Pakistan. The seller’s statement was recorded remotely through a secure digital link, while the entire legal registration process was completed electronically in accordance with official procedures. Director General of the Punjab Land Records Authority, Ikram-ul-Haq, described the successful registration as a major milestone in strengthening the confidence of overseas Pakistanis and improving transparency in land dealings. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to delivering international-standard public services through technology while promoting efficient and citizen-friendly governance. According to the PLRA, the service is currently available to Pakistanis residing in the United Kingdom. Authorities plan to expand the facility to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates within the next 30 days through continued collaboration between the Punjab Land Records Authority and Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Officials believe the digital registration system will make property ownership and transfers significantly more convenient for overseas Pakistanis while reinforcing trust in Pakistan’s land administration through secure and technology-driven services.
