Anas Sarwar joins UK Cabinet as Trade Minister

Anas Sarwar has resigned as leader of the Scottish Labour Party after accepting the post of Minister of State for Trade in Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government. The move ends his five-year leadership of the party and opens a new chapter in his political career at the national level.

Sarwar confirmed that he will step down from the Scottish Parliament and will receive a life peerage, allowing him to take a seat in the House of Lords. From there, he will serve as a minister in the UK government and take responsibility for trade-related matters.

In a statement, Sarwar said it was a great honour to be asked to join the government. He said public service has always been the driving force behind his political career. He added that serving the entire United Kingdom in the new role is a responsibility he accepts with humility and determination.

Sarwar also reflected on Scottish Labour’s disappointing performance in the recent Scottish Parliament elections. The party won only 17 seats in the 129-member parliament, its worst result on record. He admitted that he shares responsibility for the defeat and said he was sorry that the party had failed to meet expectations.

Despite the setback, Sarwar said the country faces serious political and economic challenges that require strong leadership. He warned that the rise of right-wing politics presents a major test for the United Kingdom. He said the Labour government must succeed in delivering stability, economic growth and better opportunities for people across the country.

Following his resignation, Scottish Labour deputy leader Dame Jackie Baillie has taken over as acting leader. She thanked Sarwar for his leadership and praised his commitment to equality, fairness and public service. She said the party’s executive committee will soon announce the timetable for electing a new permanent leader.

Sarwar’s departure from the Scottish Parliament will not trigger a by-election because he was elected through the regional list system. Under parliamentary rules, the next eligible Labour candidate on the Glasgow regional list is expected to replace him.

His decision has sparked strong political debate. Opposition parties accused him of changing his position after previously supporting the abolition of the House of Lords. Critics also pointed to his earlier statements in which he said his main goal was to become Scotland’s first minister and remain focused on Scottish politics.

Political leaders offered mixed reactions to the announcement. Some congratulated Sarwar on his new role and wished him success in government. Others argued that accepting a seat in the House of Lords contradicts his previous promises and could damage public confidence in politics.

Punjab launches Integrated Safe City network

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Friday formally inaugurated the Punjab Integrated Safe City Network, describing it as a major step towards protecting citizens and reducing crime across the province. Punjab has become the first province in the country to establish an integrated Safe City network covering all 41 districts and two tehsils. Officials said coordinated efforts by the police, Crime Control Department (CCD) and Safe Cities Authority had contributed to an estimated 80 per cent decline in crime. Safe Cities Authority Managing Director Ahsan Younas briefed the chief minister on the province-wide smart surveillance system. He said artificial intelligence (AI) was strengthening monitoring and enabling authorities to respond more quickly to potential threats. The network combines intelligent surveillance, Emergency Helpline 15, traffic management, real-time command and control, and predictive policing. It also offers services through the Virtual Women Police Station, Child Safety Centre and Blood Bank, along with traffic and environmental monitoring facilities. The government plans to install another 1,500 panic buttons across Punjab and equip every police station with the facility. Smart screens will also be installed at public locations. AI-powered cameras will support facial identification and weapon detection, helping law-enforcement agencies improve surveillance and respond to security threats. Maryam Nawaz said the government would expand the Safe Smart Cities project to every union council in Punjab. She said the province had made significant progress in technology, smart policing and predictive policing. The chief minister said the government had transformed every district into a Safe City within the past two and a half years. She termed the ability to monitor the entire province through a single system a major achievement. She said AI-based surveillance and predictive policing were helping authorities identify developments early and take timely action. Speaking about the security situation, Maryam Nawaz said more than 70 areas of Punjab had previously been considered no-go zones, where people avoided travelling after sunset. She claimed that the government had now eliminated such areas across the province, including the riverine belt. She added that the riverine region had recorded no serious crime or kidnapping for ransom for nearly 10 months. The administration also recently organised a cricket tournament there, which she described as a sign of improving law and order. The chief minister said the provincial government would spend Rs30 billion on development projects in the riverine belt, including healthcare and other facilities, with the aim of bringing the area closer to the development standards of Punjab’s cities.

Selena Gomez faces fraud lawsuit over Wondermind

Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, are facing allegations of fraud in a new lawsuit involving Wondermind, the mental health and wellness company they helped launch. The legal action has brought renewed attention to the company’s financial difficulties and internal problems. Wondermind was founded in 2021 with the goal of creating a platform focused on mental health and emotional wellness. Gomez and Teefey were closely associated with the venture, while Daniella Pierson served as its co-CEO. The company initially attracted significant attention and investment because of its high-profile founders and ambitious plans. Now, investors who put approximately $1.2 million into Wondermind are suing Gomez, Teefey, Pierson and Wondermind Global Inc. They are seeking a jury trial and financial recovery, claiming they were misled about the company’s condition and future prospects. According to the lawsuit, investors were allegedly given the impression that Wondermind had the infrastructure, leadership and resources needed to become a successful mental health platform. However, the plaintiffs claim the company was actually experiencing serious problems and was already facing a financial crisis. The investors also alleged that they were told Gomez would play a major role in Wondermind’s marketing efforts. They further claimed that Pierson was presented as an experienced business leader with an impressive track record and valuable partnerships. Several potential revenue-generating projects were allegedly described as being in development. However, the lawsuit claims that many of those plans failed to materialize. The plaintiffs alleged that Gomez entered into an agreement to promote Wondermind but did not fulfill her obligations under the contract. They also claimed that expected partnerships and revenue opportunities never came to fruition and that the company’s planned app was never developed. The investors further alleged that they remained unaware of the extent of Wondermind’s financial and operational difficulties for more than three years. According to the lawsuit, the company’s internal problems became widely known after a 2025 report by The Cut detailed allegations from former employees. Wondermind reportedly experienced a major financial crisis and laid off around 60 percent of its workforce in May 2025. Former employees cited in the report made allegations about Teefey’s conduct and claimed there were serious problems inside the company. Some former staff members made allegations involving drug use and described what they claimed was an unstable working environment. One former employee reportedly referred to Teefey’s office using a highly damaging description and alleged witnessing her use what they believed was Ritalin. Teefey strongly denied the accusations, describing them as false claims made by disgruntled former employees. Following the publication of the report, the investors said they sought to rescind their investments and recover the money they had put into Wondermind. The lawsuit now places Gomez, Teefey, Pierson and the company at the center of a legal dispute over whether investors were properly informed about Wondermind’s financial condition. The allegations remain claims made in the lawsuit and have not been established as facts in court. The legal proceedings could determine whether the investors’ accusations have merit and whether they are entitled to recover their investment.
