Netflix hit with $105 million film theft lawsuit

Netflix is facing a $105 million lawsuit after filmmakers accused the streaming giant of mishandling an unreleased movie, alleging that a master copy of their World War II thriller Fortitude was stolen from the company’s Los Angeles offices, jeopardising the film’s commercial future. According to a lawsuit filed Thursday in a California federal court, writer-producer Simon Afram and his production company Op-Fortitude claim Netflix failed to properly safeguard an unencrypted copy of the film after requesting it for internal review. The complaint states that Netflix first expressed interest in acquiring Fortitude after receiving promotional materials in December 2025. The company later requested a working version of the film in June so executives could screen it internally. The filmmakers said Netflix instructed them to provide the movie through a digital cinema package (DCP), a format commonly used to protect films from unauthorised access during screenings. According to the lawsuit, one of the film’s producers personally delivered the unencrypted drive to Netflix’s Sunset Bronson Studios office on June 15. The producer allegedly instructed the company to delete the files after the screening and notify him when the drive was ready for collection. Ten days later, the filmmakers claim they were informed that the drive had been stolen. An email included in the court filing quotes Netflix’s Head of Film Acquisitions, Sean Berney, who wrote: “This is a first for us. Unfortunately, someone stole a good amount of drives from our office desks this past week. We’ve been working through this with our security teams to no luck. Our piracy teams are on high alert with the breach and will monitor.” Netflix later determined that the other missing drives contained no data. The lawsuit further alleges that Netflix refused to confirm whether it had filed a police report and declined the filmmakers’ request to involve the Los Angeles Police Department, despite the producers filing their own report. Netflix has rejected the allegations, saying it does not accept responsibility for the loss. In a statement, the company said it disputes bearing “the risk of loss for a film delivered without the proper industry-standard safeguards,” while adding that it had offered to monitor piracy websites for any unauthorised release of the film. The streamer also claimed it stopped sharing details of its internal investigation after lawyers representing Afram demanded $165 million, describing the demand as a “hostile attempt to extort money” rather than an effort to resolve the dispute in good faith. The filmmakers argue that the theft has significantly damaged the film’s market value because any potential distributor would now have to be informed that an unencrypted copy may still exist. They claim the incident has complicated acquisition discussions, insurance coverage and marketing plans while increasing the risk of an online leak before the movie’s official release. According to the lawsuit, the producers have paused negotiations with several interested domestic and international distributors until the matter is resolved. Directed by Simon West, Fortitude is based on a true World War II story about British intelligence operatives outsmarting Nazi leadership. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Matthew Goode, Ed Skrein, Jordi Mollà and Alice Eve.

Jeff Hiller earns Emmy nod and unexpected ChatGPT comparisons

Actor Jeff Hiller has earned his second career Emmy nomination for a performance that lasted just seven minutes, but it is the unexpected comparison to ChatGPT that has amused him the most. Hiller received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his appearance as Larry in Apple TV+’s science-fiction drama Pluribus. The actor recently addressed the reaction during an appearance on The Daily Show, where he admitted he never expected viewers to compare his character to artificial intelligence. “I’ve heard this. A lot of people have said, ‘You’re just like ChatGPT,’” Hiller said while discussing audience reactions to his role. Reflecting on his performance, he joked that his original intention had been very different from how viewers interpreted it. “I was trying to convey extreme love for her. And instead, I did ChatGPT. Anyway, I got an Emmy nomination for it. Sometimes you aim for one target, you hit another,” he said. In Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan, Hiller portrays Larry, a cheerful biker who shares a memorable conversation with Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn, in the fourth episode of the series. The show is set in a world where a mysterious virus has transformed most of humanity into a blissfully content hive mind. Carol is among the few people who remain unaffected, and her interaction with Larry becomes one of the episode’s defining moments. The scene, in which Carol questions Larry about the intentions of the hive mind, ultimately earned Hiller widespread praise and an Emmy nomination despite his limited screen time. Speaking about his chances of winning at this year’s ceremony, Hiller remained characteristically humorous. “I’m not gonna win,” he joked before revealing the acceptance speech he believes would fit the unusual journey of his performance. “Suck it!” he quipped, laughing at the idea that his role had resonated with audiences in such an unexpected way. The nomination marks another milestone in Hiller’s career. It is his second Emmy nomination in two years, following his success for portraying Joel in the final season of HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy Somebody Somewhere. Since then, Hiller has continued to build an impressive television résumé with guest appearances in series including Elsbeth, Ghosts and Widow’s Bay, further establishing himself as one of television’s most dependable character actors. His latest recognition also highlights the impact a brief but memorable performance can have, with just seven minutes on screen proving enough to leave a lasting impression on both viewers and Emmy voters. The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominees were announced earlier this month, with Hiller among the contenders in the guest actor drama category. The ceremony will honour the year’s best performances across television. While Hiller insists he is not expecting to take home another Emmy trophy, his humorous response to being compared with ChatGPT has become one of the lighter moments of this year’s awards season, showing that even an unconventional audience reaction can become part of an actor’s success story.

    Here’s why Disney+ cancelled Marvel’s Wonder Man

Marvel Studios has reportedly cancelled Wonder Man after its first season, with the Disney+ series not expected to return for a second instalment as the company continues reshaping its television strategy. According to Variety, Marvel never planned to move forward with a second season in the traditional way. A source told the publication that a writers’ room for a follow-up season was never opened, and members of the creative team have since been released from the project. The comedy-drama starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as aspiring actor Simon Williams, alongside Ben Kingsley, who reprised his Marvel role as Trevor Slattery. The cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby. The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Cretton directed the opening two episodes, while Guest served as the show’s executive producer and showrunner. Despite its reported cancellation, Wonder Man received a strong response from critics. The show’s first season earned a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Marvel Television’s best-reviewed recent projects. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance. The nomination marked another milestone in his career, making him the first live-action performer to receive Emmy recognition for both Marvel and DC projects after previously winning for HBO’s Watchmen. Television critic Alison Herman praised the performances of the two lead actors, writing, “Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley make their characters equally ridiculous and romantic, urged on by a motivation more intimate and individual than saving the world.” Marvel described the series through its official synopsis, stating, “Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams (Abdul Mateen) is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery (Kingsley), an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak (Burić) is remaking the superhero film ‘Wonder Man.’” The synopsis continues, “These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.” Although Disney has not released official streaming figures, Wonder Man briefly reached No. 8 on Nielsen’s Streaming Originals chart during its debut week before dropping out of the rankings the following week. The reported cancellation comes as Disney continues reducing its Marvel television output in favour of fewer, more focused productions. The studio has increasingly shifted away from producing a large number of interconnected streaming series, instead prioritising projects with stronger long-term potential. The latest development is particularly surprising because Wonder Man had reportedly been greenlit for a second season in March, only weeks after its debut. However, according to Variety, those plans ultimately did not progress into active development, with no writers’ room ever being assembled. While Marvel Studios has not officially commented on the report, the decision signals another step in Disney’s broader effort to streamline its Marvel Television slate despite the show’s positive reviews and award recognition.

Was Celeste Rivas pregnant? DA reveals detail in D4vd case

A key clarification has emerged in the murder case against singer D4vd, as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Celeste Rivas Hernandez was not pregnant at the time of her death, putting to rest speculation that surfaced during recent court proceedings. The clarification follows widespread discussion after prosecutors presented text messages during a preliminary hearing showing that Rivas had previously become pregnant in 2024, when she was 13 years old, and later underwent an abortion. The disclosure led to online speculation that she may have also been pregnant when she died in April 2025. According to the District Attorney’s Office, investigators do not believe Rivas was pregnant at the time of her death. Prosecutors shared the update with People on July 29, explaining that the clarification was issued after an amendment to her death certificate had changed the pregnancy section from “no” to “unknown,” creating confusion about her medical status. The murder case centres on David Anthony Burke, the singer professionally known as D4vd, who has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains. During the preliminary hearing, prosecutors introduced text messages exchanged between Burke and Rivas regarding the earlier pregnancy. In one message, Rivas wrote, “Both of us aren’t able to take care of it,” while Burke replied, “I know but still.” Prosecutors presented the messages as part of their evidence during the hearing. Court proceedings also included testimony from investigators and forensic experts as prosecutors argued there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The hearing focused on determining whether enough evidence existed to hold Burke over for trial rather than deciding guilt or innocence. Earlier this week, a Los Angeles judge ruled that prosecutors had presented enough evidence for Burke to stand trial on the charges. The decision came after several days of testimony and the presentation of forensic, digital and documentary evidence by the prosecution. Rivas’ remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla linked to Burke. Authorities later ruled her death a homicide, leading to Burke’s arrest in April 2026. He remains in custody after pleading not guilty to all charges filed against him. The District Attorney’s latest clarification specifically addresses speculation surrounding Rivas’ pregnancy status, confirming that while the teenager had previously experienced a pregnancy more than a year before her death, she was not pregnant when she was killed. Prosecutors said the earlier text messages and abortion were unrelated to her medical condition at the time of her death. The criminal case against Burke will now move forward after the judge’s ruling, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks as prosecutors continue pursuing the charges against the singer.

Producer claims Netflix security failure cost Him $105 million

A film producer has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, seeking $105 million in damages after claiming that a copy of his unreleased Nicolas Cage movie was stolen from the company’s Hollywood studios. According to the lawsuit, producer Simon Afram alleges that Netflix failed to properly protect a master copy of his World War II drama, Fortitude, resulting in the loss of the film and causing significant financial harm. The legal complaint was filed in a California court on Wednesday. The lawsuit states that Afram and his production team delivered an unencrypted master copy of Fortitude to Netflix in June after the streaming giant requested the film as part of discussions over a possible distribution deal. Afram reportedly invested more than $45 million in the project, which took around seven years to complete. At the time, the filmmakers were hoping to secure a distribution agreement with either Netflix or another major entertainment company. However, only nine days after the film was delivered, the producers received an email from Netflix informing them that several hard drives had been stolen from the company’s offices. According to the lawsuit, the stolen items included the drive containing the only master copy of Fortitude. The producers argue that the theft has severely damaged the commercial value of the movie. They claim that distributors are unlikely to purchase a film that could potentially be leaked online through piracy, making it a far riskier investment. They also contend that Netflix should have implemented stronger security measures to protect valuable and confidential film materials stored at its facilities. According to the complaint, no major distributor would be willing to spend tens of millions of dollars acquiring and promoting a film while facing the possibility that an unauthorized copy could surface online at any moment. The producers believe this ongoing risk has effectively destroyed the movie’s market value, prompting them to seek at least $105 million in compensation. Netflix has rejected the allegations and said it does not accept responsibility for the claimed losses. In a statement, the company argued that the filmmakers delivered the master copy without using standard industry security protections, including encryption, and therefore Netflix should not be held liable for any resulting damage. The streaming service also emphasized that although it does not own the rights to Fortitude, it takes the security of film content seriously. Netflix said it launched an investigation into the theft after the incident and has continued monitoring piracy websites to ensure that unauthorized copies of the film do not appear online. In addition, Netflix accused Afram’s legal team of acting in bad faith. The company said it chose not to share details of its internal investigation with the producer’s lawyers because it believed they were attempting to pressure Netflix into paying a large financial settlement instead of cooperating to address the situation. The legal dispute is expected to focus on whether Netflix had a duty to safeguard the master copy of the film and whether the theft caused the financial losses claimed by the producers. The outcome of the case could have broader implications for how studios and streaming platforms handle the security of unreleased films during distribution negotiations.

Ali Soomro shared clips on Instagram showing the Grammy-winning artist performing his remix of Pal Pal during a livestream alongside Mexican music group Latin Mafia. The videos quickly caught the attention of fans, with Soomro expressing his excitement and gratitude over seeing one of the world’s most celebrated DJs embrace a song that began as a passion project. Reflecting on the moment, Soomro said it reminded him of how unexpectedly music can connect people from different parts of the world. He described the experience as surreal, saying that watching Fred Again reinterpret the song made him realize how far Pal Pal had travelled since its humble beginnings. The singer also looked back on the story behind the track, explaining that he and fellow artist Afusic, whose real name is Affan Khan, created Pal Pal simply because they loved making music. According to Soomro, neither of them expected the song to become a major success. Before its release, they had never earned any income from their music and were not trying to follow trends or create a commercial hit. Their only goal was to produce something meaningful that reflected their passion and creativity. Soomro revealed that the journey was filled with hard work and dedication. He recalled spending countless late nights in the studio after completing their regular jobs, often sacrificing personal time to continue working on the song. He remembered how Afusic would arrive at the studio after finishing work, while he would already be there waiting with excitement to continue developing their music together. Those moments, he said, remain among his most treasured memories. The singer also credited Spotify Pakistan for playing an important role in the song’s early success. He explained that when Pal Pal was first added to Spotify playlists, it gave the team confidence and motivation to keep believing in their work. Those early milestones encouraged them to continue pursuing their musical ambitions despite the challenges they faced. Soomro also acknowledged Indian singer-songwriter Talwiinder, who later released his own version of Pal Pal. He thanked the artist for believing in the song and bringing a fresh perspective that helped introduce it to new listeners. According to Soomro, Talwiinder’s contribution added another dimension to the track and played an important role in its growing popularity across borders. Concluding his message, Soomro expressed heartfelt appreciation to his team, collaborators and everyone who supported the project from the beginning. He said the song’s remarkable journey would not have been possible without the collective efforts of those who believed in it. Since its release, Pal Pal has become one of Pakistan’s biggest musical successes. The track was ranked as the second most-streamed song in the country on Spotify Pakistan, reflecting its widespread popularity. Its success also elevated both Afusic and Ali Soomro into Spotify Pakistan’s list of the country’s most-streamed artists, where they secured the eighth and ninth positions respectively, marking a major milestone in their musical careers.

The reality show, known for its intense strategy, deception, and mind games, is returning with a fresh lineup of participants from different backgrounds, promising viewers another season filled with drama and suspense. Although Shahneel has often been seen cheering for and supporting her brother during his cricketing journey, she is now stepping into the spotlight to create an identity of her own. By participating in The Traitors Season 2, she is looking to establish herself beyond being known as the sister of one of India’s leading cricketers. Shahneel has gained a considerable following on social media over the years, where she is admired for her fashion sense, lifestyle content, and close bond with her family. Her public appearances at cricket matches and supportive posts for Shubman Gill have made her a recognizable personality among cricket enthusiasts. However, The Traitors will present a completely different challenge, requiring contestants to rely on intelligence, strategy, communication skills, and psychological gameplay rather than popularity alone. The reality series is based on trust and betrayal, with contestants working together while secretly trying to identify the “traitors” hidden among them. Participants must form alliances, make difficult decisions, and survive elimination rounds, making the show one of the most engaging reality formats in recent years. Shahneel’s participation is expected to attract both reality TV fans and cricket followers, who are eager to see how she performs in such a competitive environment. Reality television allows contestants to connect directly with audiences, helping them build independent careers and public identities. With a diverse cast and fresh faces, The Traitors Season 2 is expected to deliver plenty of excitement, unexpected twists, and memorable moments. Spider-Man film breaks records despite major leak

LOS ANGELES: Marvel’s highly anticipated film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has continued its strong box office performance despite facing a major online leak shortly before its release. A high-quality pirated copy of the film reportedly appeared on the social media platform X, creating concerns for the movie’s commercial success. The leaked version was later removed, but it had already attracted millions of views during the time it remained online. According to reports, the leaked footage was available for several hours and received widespread engagement, including thousands of likes and reposts. The incident added to growing concerns in Hollywood over digital piracy and the protection of major film releases. Despite the setback, the latest Spider-Man instalment has shown strong audience demand. The film recorded an impressive performance during preview screenings, earning around $72 million and surpassing the preview record previously held by “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned $60 million. The strong early response has increased expectations for the film’s opening weekend. Industry analysts are predicting a possible domestic opening of up to $300 million, although Sony Pictures has maintained a more cautious estimate of around $195 million. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the fourth major Spider-Man film in the current series and follows Peter Parker as he faces a new reality after being forgotten by the world. The story explores his struggle to continue fighting crime while dealing with personal challenges and a powerful new threat. The film has generated significant attention due to its connection with the wider Marvel universe and high expectations from fans worldwide. Entertainment analysts say the strong box office performance despite the leak highlights the continued popularity of the Spider-Man franchise. They added that fans’ interest in watching the film on the big screen appears to have outweighed the impact of the piracy incident.
