Central Command announces completion of two-hour retaliatory strike campaign against Iranian military targets

The United States military has completed a concentrated two-hour campaign of heavy air strikes targeting dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps installations across Iran, according to an official statement released by US Central Command.

The precision operations focused primarily on disabling strategic military assets, including high-level command centres, missile production and drone manufacturing facilities, coastal radar surveillance outposts, integrated air defence networks, and naval infrastructure.

Military officials confirmed that the retaliatory operation was executed following an attempted surprise ballistic missile attack launched by Iranian forces against American military personnel stationed in the region.

Central Command stated that US defensive systems successfully intercepted all incoming Iranian missiles, preventing casualties or facility damage. According to defence spokespersons, the targeted strikes were designed to degrade Iran’s offensive capabilities, neutralise recurring threats posed by regional proxy forces, and safeguard commercial shipping corridors and partner nations across the Arabian Gulf.

Colombia’s new president takes office with hardline pledge on security and economy

Abelardo De La Espriella has been sworn in as Colombia’s president in Cali, breaking with the tradition of holding the inauguration ceremony at the congressional building in Bogotá. The 48-year-old former lawyer and ally of US President Donald Trump won June’s runoff election on a platform focused on hardline security measures, significant cuts to state spending, and the expansion of national energy production. During his inaugural speech at the Pichincha Battalion military base, De La Espriella declared that peace negotiations with armed groups are completely exhausted. He stated that criminal syndicates must either submit to the rule of law or face a direct response from security forces. To combat drug trafficking, he announced plans to resume aerial spraying to eradicate coca crops and confirmed that Colombia will join the US-led Shield of the Americas programme. On the economic front, De La Espriella pledged to freeze public spending and simplify the tax regime to stimulate private investment, while proposing to reduce the size of the state by up to 40%. He confirmed that established social programmes would remain intact. To boost declining reserves, the new administration plans to expand oil and gas exploration, including the use of responsible fracking, alongside efforts to strengthen state-owned energy firm Ecopetrol. De La Espriella’s inauguration reflects a wider political shift across Latin America. Incoming Finance Minister Miguel Gomez noted a fiscal deficit between 7% and 8% of GDP, indicating that initial governance will depend on executive decrees whilst navigating a divided congress. Meanwhile, opposition figures led by Senator Ivan Cepeda organized peaceful demonstrations in Barranquilla, pledging to defend democratic institutions and monitor potential rollbacks of social protections.

Epstein survivor says abuse continued during his prison sentence

A woman who says she was sexually exploited by convicted American financier Jeffrey Epstein has alleged that he continued to abuse her even while serving a sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor. Rosa Jiles, an alleged survivor of Epstein’s abuse, said she faced sexual exploitation by him in 2009, when he was serving his sentence following a conviction related to prostitution involving an underage girl. According to Jiles, Epstein showed no remorse for his crimes and continued to prey on young women despite his criminal conviction. Jiles said her ordeal began when she was 18 and living in Uzbekistan. She claimed that a modeling agent offered her an opportunity to travel to the United States, but after she arrived, the agency placed her under financial pressure by charging her for expenses including rent, visa costs and other fees. To earn additional money, Jiles said she eventually took a receptionist job at one of Epstein’s offices. She recalled meeting Epstein for the first time in Palm Beach, Florida, where she alleged that he forced her to undress and sexually assaulted her on the same day. Jiles further claimed that the abuse continued regularly, particularly during weekends at a property in West Palm Beach. She said the alleged sexual exploitation did not end after Epstein’s release from house arrest in 2010 and continued in New York as well. According to Jiles, the experience left her convinced that authorities would never stop Epstein. She said she eventually managed to escape his control after becoming financially independent and gaining the ability to support herself. Jiles also alleged that Epstein never demonstrated genuine regret for his actions. In her account, his criminal conviction did not stop him from continuing to exploit vulnerable young women. Her allegations add to the accounts of women who have publicly described abuse and exploitation connected to Epstein, whose crimes and relationships with powerful figures drew international attention. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Greek police arrest boxer over death of Scottish c…

Greek authorities have arrested a 26 year old former boxer in connection with the death of a Scottish aid worker whose body was discovered in a suitcase in Athens, according to a British broadcaster. The suspect, identified as Sharif Ahmadzai, was taken into custody after officers found the remains of 38 year old Elisabeth Jane Ross in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of the Greek capital on July 18, several days after she had been reported missing. Ahmadzai is scheduled to appear in court in Athens on Wednesday. Ahmadzai was born in Afghanistan and later became a champion boxer before settling permanently in Greece, where he currently lives with his American wife and their child. He left Afghanistan as a teenager after losing both parents to the conflict there. His father, who served as a commander in the Afghan army, was shot dead, while his mother and siblings died in a suicide bombing in Kabul when he was 15 years old. According to a video account published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Ahmadzai made his way to Greece by traveling through Iran and Turkey before eventually reaching a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos. It was there that he is understood to have met his future wife and converted to Christianity. The couple went on to found a charity called Love Every Nation Athens, which works to support other refugees arriving in the country. Police say Ross, who was from Edinburgh and known to friends and family as Lisa, entered Greece on June 26 and initially stayed in the Kertasini area of Piraeus until July 10. She had traveled to volunteer with an Athens based refugee support organization. She later told friends in Greece that she planned to travel to Kypseli on July 15 to meet up with American acquaintances. A police union in Greece said investigators confirmed that Ahmadzai held a key to the apartment where Ross had been staying. The union also said officers verified surveillance footage that appears to show him carrying a suitcase believed to have contained her body. Data from a location sharing application used by Ahmadzai’s wife reportedly placed the suspect at an address on Rethymnou Street, the location where Ross is believed to have died, in the days leading up to her death. Authorities said the suspect also used the victim’s bank cards to withdraw cash after her death. The building where her body was ultimately found sits roughly twenty minutes away from the area where Ross had originally been staying during her time in the city. Mourners have since left flowers at the site where her remains were discovered. One handwritten note left among the tributes expressed hope that her memory would live on and that she would not be forgotten. In Edinburgh, Pastor Peter Anderson said Ross had belonged to the congregation at City on a Hill church for two decades. He described her as someone with a strong commitment to missionary work who had traveled widely to help others. Speaking in a video shared on the church’s social media page, Anderson called her a deeply valued member of the community and said her loss had been felt profoundly by those who knew her. During a search of Ahmadzai’s residence, police said officers seized a replica pistol along with a knife. Authorities have also fast tracked a toxicology examination in an effort to determine the exact cause of Ross’s death. Investigators say they are additionally trying to locate the American friends Ross had mentioned to acquaintances shortly before her disappearance. The case has drawn significant attention both in Greece and in the United Kingdom, where Ross’s church community and friends have publicly mourned her loss while the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death continues.
