The new cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will play Nathaniel Milbury, better known as the Marvel villain Mr Sinister.

The announcement was one of the most anticipated moments of Disney’s biennial showcase, where the entertainment giant presents upcoming projects across film and television.

Disney also offered fans an early glimpse of “Frozen 3,” which is expected to arrive in cinemas in November 2027. The story will continue Anna and Elsa’s journey, with Anna preparing for her marriage. The studio further showcased “Star Wars: Starfighter,” featuring Ryan Gosling. The film is among Disney’s upcoming major projects and is being developed alongside other high-profile productions.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man shatters box office with $927m opening

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered one of the biggest box office debuts in cinema history, earning an impressive $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend and cementing its place as one of Marvel’s most successful launches. The superhero blockbuster collected $355 million across the United States and Canada, making it the second-largest domestic opening weekend of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which earned $357 million during its debut in 2019, without adjusting for inflation. International audiences also turned out in huge numbers, helping the film earn $572 million overseas. China led all international markets with $121 million in ticket sales, while Australia recorded the country’s biggest opening weekend of 2026 with $30.4 million. Combined, those figures lifted the movie’s global opening weekend total to $927 million. The latest installment marks Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. The story follows Parker after the events that left the world with no memory of his superhero identity. Forced to navigate life in isolation, he continues fighting crime while searching for meaningful human connections and struggling with loneliness. Zendaya reprises her role as MJ, Parker’s greatest love, while the film explores themes of friendship, emotional resilience, and hope. The emotional storytelling has been widely praised for adding depth to the superhero spectacle and connecting with audiences beyond its action sequences. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the film’s opening weekend as a remarkable achievement, celebrating the overwhelming response from audiences around the world. The success also strengthens Marvel Studios’ dominance at the global box office. The studio now holds the four biggest worldwide opening weekends in history, led by Avengers: Endgame with $1.22 billion, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $927 million, Avengers: Infinity War with $640 million, and Spider-Man: No Way Home with $600 million. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said the film’s emotional focus on friendship and human connection has resonated with audiences of every generation and across different cultures, contributing to its extraordinary commercial success. Despite growing concerns in recent years about superhero fatigue, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received an overwhelmingly positive reception. The movie currently holds a 90% critics’ score and an impressive 98% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting strong support from both reviewers and moviegoers. Entertainment analysts believe the film’s exploration of loneliness, friendship, and overcoming personal struggles has struck a chord with Generation Z, particularly younger audiences seeking relatable emotional stories alongside blockbuster action. The film’s blockbuster performance has also boosted an already strong summer movie season, joining successful releases such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey in driving audiences back to cinemas. Industry experts say the combined success of these films produced one of the biggest weekends ever for movie theaters. Although the domestic box office has continued to recover, overall ticket sales in 2026 remain below pre-pandemic levels. However, the exceptional performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has provided another major boost for theaters and demonstrated that major franchise releases continue to attract massive global audiences.

LOS ANGELES: Marvel’s highly anticipated film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has continued its strong box office performance despite facing a major online leak shortly before its release. A high-quality pirated copy of the film reportedly appeared on the social media platform X, creating concerns for the movie’s commercial success. The leaked version was later removed, but it had already attracted millions of views during the time it remained online. According to reports, the leaked footage was available for several hours and received widespread engagement, including thousands of likes and reposts. The incident added to growing concerns in Hollywood over digital piracy and the protection of major film releases. Despite the setback, the latest Spider-Man instalment has shown strong audience demand. The film recorded an impressive performance during preview screenings, earning around $72 million and surpassing the preview record previously held by “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned $60 million. The strong early response has increased expectations for the film’s opening weekend. Industry analysts are predicting a possible domestic opening of up to $300 million, although Sony Pictures has maintained a more cautious estimate of around $195 million. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the fourth major Spider-Man film in the current series and follows Peter Parker as he faces a new reality after being forgotten by the world. The story explores his struggle to continue fighting crime while dealing with personal challenges and a powerful new threat. The film has generated significant attention due to its connection with the wider Marvel universe and high expectations from fans worldwide. Entertainment analysts say the strong box office performance despite the leak highlights the continued popularity of the Spider-Man franchise. They added that fans’ interest in watching the film on the big screen appears to have outweighed the impact of the piracy incident.

India files charges against 13 in medical exam paper leak case

India’s federal investigation agency has filed charges against 13 people accused of involvement in the leak of question papers for the country’s national medical entrance examination, following weeks of protests over the scandal. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said the accused include subject experts linked to the National Testing Agency, intermediaries who allegedly distributed leaked papers, and individuals associated with coaching institutes. The charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust, and destruction of evidence. All 13 accused are currently in custody, according to the investigation agency. The case relates to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which was taken by nearly two million students in May. The examination was cancelled after allegations emerged that questions had been leaked in several areas. A fresh test was later conducted on June 21. The controversy triggered nationwide protests led by students and young activists, with thousands gathering in New Delhi and other cities demanding accountability. The demonstrations intensified after protesters marched towards parliament and faced clashes with police. The unrest eventually led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who stepped down after mounting pressure over the handling of the examination crisis. India’s Supreme Court has also intervened in the matter, ordering authorities not to take strict action against protesters and directing the release of detained minors. The court further instructed officials to preserve surveillance footage related to alleged police action during demonstrations. In response to the controversy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has introduced proposed amendments to public examination laws. The changes seek tougher punishments, including longer prison sentences and heavier fines for those involved in exam fraud. Under the proposed rules, those found guilty could face imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines reaching 50 million Indian rupees.

Punjab imposes 60-day ban on swimming in water bod…

The Punjab government has imposed a 60-day ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across the province. The restriction has been introduced under Section 144 of the law. The Punjab Home Department issued a notification announcing the ban. According to the notification, people will also be prohibited from bathing in rainwater accumulated on streets, roads and open areas. The government has also restricted boating without official permission in the province. The ban applies to the water bodies covered under the notification. Officials said the restrictions were imposed to protect human lives during the ongoing monsoon season. Water levels have increased in several dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across Punjab. Heavy rainfall has also created pools of standing water in different areas. Authorities fear that entering these waters could increase the risk of drowning and other accidents. The government has therefore moved to prevent people from swimming or bathing in potentially dangerous locations. The Home Department said the restrictions would remain in place for 60 days. Citizens have been advised to cooperate with the authorities and avoid entering rivers, canals, dams and other water bodies. The ban comes as Punjab continues to experience monsoon rains. Several parts of the province have already faced heavy rainfall, flooding and rising water levels. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas where water levels are rising. People have also been advised to follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary activities near flooded areas.
