Gohar Rasheed criticises celebrity culture

Actors Gohar Rasheed and Khaqan Shahnawaz recently shared their views on Pakistan’s entertainment industry, discussing everything from celebrity culture and political awareness to the Aurat March and the treatment of artists behind the scenes.

During the interview, Gohar Rasheed expressed concern over what he sees as a growing lack of awareness among many celebrities. According to him, several actors and public figures avoid discussing political or social issues, choosing instead to remain neutral in order to protect their public image.

Rasheed said that many stars are reluctant to speak not only about Pakistan’s political matters but also about important international events. In his opinion, this tendency to remain silent reflects a broader lack of general knowledge within the entertainment industry. He argued that many personalities are more focused on maintaining popularity than engaging with issues that affect society.

He also criticized the industry’s increasing obsession with social media success, saying that likes, followers and online engagement have become more important than artistic excellence. Rasheed noted that many people in showbiz are competing for digital numbers instead of concentrating on improving their craft. He believes this shift has weakened the creative standards of the industry and distracted performers from meaningful storytelling.

The discussion later moved to the Aurat March, Pakistan’s annual movement advocating for women’s rights. Rasheed clarified that he supports the overall goals of the campaign, particularly its efforts to promote equality and highlight issues affecting women. However, he said that he disagrees with some of the slogans displayed during the marches, arguing that a few of them can be interpreted as disrespectful or controversial.

Using item songs as an example, Rasheed explained that he opposes anything that objectifies women and believes campaigns for women’s rights should communicate their message in a way that appeals to a wider audience. He suggested that activists can continue advocating for equal rights while choosing language that is less likely to divide public opinion or shift attention away from the movement’s main objectives.

Khaqan Shahnawaz offered a different perspective, defending the Aurat March against criticism. He argued that many people focus only on a small number of controversial slogans while ignoring the movement’s broader mission. According to Shahnawaz, the campaign raises awareness about serious issues including acid attacks, gender-based violence, femicide and the denial of basic rights to women across Pakistan.

He said the Aurat March is one of the few public platforms that consistently highlights these problems and demands meaningful reforms. Shahnawaz added that criticizing the wording of a few slogans overlooks the larger struggle for justice and equality. He also emphasized that the frustration expressed by many participants reflects the realities faced by women who experience discrimination and violence.

Shahnawaz further argued that the language used during protests should not overshadow the importance of the causes being raised. In his view, people should pay greater attention to the issues themselves rather than attempting to dictate how protesters express their emotions. He also said that participation in the Aurat March should not automatically define a celebrity’s responsibilities as a public figure.

Beyond social issues, Rasheed highlighted long-standing problems within Pakistan’s entertainment industry. He called for fairer treatment of actors, writers, directors and technical crew members, stressing that many professionals continue to face delayed payments and inadequate financial recognition for their work.

He also urged producers and production houses to ensure timely compensation and a fair distribution of royalties, saying that everyone involved in creating television and film projects deserves respect and proper remuneration. Rasheed warned against exploiting creative professionals, adding that those who mistreat workers may eventually be held accountable for their actions.

On the professional front, Gohar Rasheed is preparing for several upcoming television projects, including Fanaa, Ae Dil, Hasrat and Jindo. Meanwhile, Khaqan Shahnawaz continues to build his acting career with performances in dramas such as Hadsa, Sukoon and My Dear Cinderella, while also maintaining a strong presence as a digital content creator.

Zara Noor Abbas raises alarm over child safety and rising crimes

Pakistani actress Zara Noor Abbas has expressed deep concern over the growing number of crimes against children in Pakistan, describing the current situation as one of the “worst times” for the country. Taking to her Instagram Story, the actress highlighted the increasing reports of sexual violence, murder and other serious crimes, saying that the issue goes beyond the incidents themselves. According to her, the bigger concern is the apparent lack of strong consequences for those involved in such crimes. She suggested that when perpetrators do not see meaningful punishment, it can encourage others to commit similar offences. Zara Noor Abbas also questioned the overall state of law and order, stressing that the situation has become increasingly alarming for ordinary families. She pointed out that such incidents are no longer something that can be viewed as isolated cases or limited to a particular group. Instead, the frequency of disturbing reports has created a wider sense of insecurity within society. The actress particularly raised concerns about parents who are struggling to understand how they can protect their children in an environment where serious crimes continue to make headlines. She questioned whether people are being pushed towards taking matters into their own hands because of a perceived lack of effective action under the law. Zara also referred to the case involving Mir Raza Ali, in which his body was reportedly exhumed for another post-mortem examination. The case had initially been treated as a suspected suicide. However, a subsequent examination reportedly revealed that the deceased had been shot and had also suffered signs of physical violence. The actress further expressed concern over the reported rape and murder of a minor girl in Karachi. She highlighted the discussion surrounding the alleged suspect’s young age and the possibility of providing psychological assistance because of his age. While discussing these cases, Zara questioned how parents can realistically ensure the safety of their children when disturbing incidents continue to emerge. Her remarks reflected growing public anxiety over crimes involving minors and the fear that insufficient accountability could allow such cases to become more frequent. The actress’s comments have drawn attention to the broader concerns surrounding child safety, justice and accountability in Pakistan. Her questions also underline the pressure faced by parents who want to protect their children but remain worried about whether existing legal and social systems are strong enough to prevent such crimes. Zara Noor Abbas’ statement has once again brought the issue of child protection into the spotlight, with her remarks focusing on the need for stronger accountability and effective measures to ensure that those responsible for serious crimes face appropriate consequences.

Abdullah Shafique exits GSL to join Pakistan Test team

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique has been released by Lahore Qalandars from the ongoing Global Super League (GSL) to join the national Test squad ahead of the team’s first Test assignment against the West Indies. The right-handed batter was originally part of Lahore Qalandars’ squad for the GSL campaign in Guyana. However, the franchise has confirmed his departure after his final appearance in the tournament, allowing him to link up with Pakistan’s Test squad in Trinidad and Tobago. To fill the vacancy left by Shafique, Lahore Qalandars have signed Bangladesh batter Shamim Hossain for the remainder of the Global Super League. The left-handed all-rounder is expected to strengthen the team’s middle order as the tournament enters its crucial stages. Shafique featured in Lahore Qalandars’ last match against the Guyana Amazon Warriors before leaving the competition. In that fixture, he played a quick cameo, scoring 21 runs off just 13 deliveries. His aggressive knock provided valuable momentum during the innings before he departed to fulfill his national team commitments. Following the conclusion of his GSL duties, Shafique is set to travel to Trinidad and Tobago, where Pakistan’s Test squad is currently preparing for its upcoming red-ball challenge against the West Indies. The 25-year-old has been drafted into the Test squad as a replacement for the injured Abdullah Fazal, who has been ruled out due to injury. His inclusion adds experience to Pakistan’s batting lineup, particularly at the top of the order, where he has previously delivered several important performances in Test cricket. Shafique has established himself as one of Pakistan’s dependable red-ball batters since making his Test debut. Known for his solid technique and temperament, he has played key innings in overseas conditions and remains an important part of Pakistan’s long-term plans in the format. His return to the national setup comes at an important time as Pakistan prepare for a challenging Test series in the Caribbean. The team management will hope his recent competitive cricket in the Global Super League helps him make a smooth transition into the Test environment. Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars will continue their GSL campaign with Shamim Hossain replacing Shafique in the squad. The franchise will be aiming to maintain its momentum as it competes for a place in the knockout stage of the tournament. The Global Super League has featured several international stars this season, providing players with valuable match practice before returning to national duties. Shafique’s early exit from the competition highlights the priority given to international commitments, with Pakistan keen to have a full-strength squad available for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies. His move from franchise cricket back to international cricket marks another important step as Pakistan look to build a strong lineup for the remainder of their Test campaign.

Stephen Baldwin explains why he chose faith over H…

Stephen Baldwin has opened up about one of the biggest decisions of his career, revealing why he stepped away from mainstream Hollywood despite enjoying major success in the 1990s. The actor said he deliberately chose a different path from fellow movie star Tom Cruise, explaining that fame and blockbuster success were never his ultimate goals.  Baldwin, now 60, reflected on his career in a recent interview with People, looking back at the period following his acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning film The Usual Suspects. At the time, many believed he was on track to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Instead, Baldwin said he decided to walk away from that path after experiencing a profound change in his personal life.  “I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise and have to make $100 million at the box office,” Baldwin said, adding that he preferred living a simpler life over chasing blockbuster success. He stressed that the comment was not intended as criticism of Cruise but as an explanation of his own priorities and ambitions.  According to Baldwin, everything changed in the early 2000s when he became a born-again Christian. His spiritual journey began after a Brazilian housekeeper working for his family shared what he described as a prophetic message, saying he and his wife, Kennya Baldwin, would one day dedicate their lives to ministry. Although skeptical at first, Baldwin said his perspective shifted after attending Christian events with his sister Beth Baldwin.  One event featuring Christian skateboarders particularly inspired him. The experience led him to create Livin It, a faith-based skateboarding video that combined extreme sports with Christian teachings. The project became a success and eventually grew into a nationwide ministry that took Baldwin to more than 125 churches over four years. That, he said, was the moment he realized his future was no longer in mainstream Hollywood.  Since then, Baldwin has focused on producing faith-based content while remaining active through podcasts, speaking engagements and independent projects. He admitted that his outspoken religious beliefs and political views may have made him less appealing to traditional Hollywood studios, but he has no regrets about the direction his life has taken.  The actor also credited his family for keeping him grounded. Married to Kennya Baldwin since 1990, he said his wife has been his “anchor,” while describing his faith as the foundation of everything he does. As the father of Hailey Bieber and grandfather to two young children, Baldwin said family remains his greatest blessing.  Looking back, Baldwin believes choosing purpose over fame was the right decision. While his career could have followed a more conventional Hollywood trajectory, he says he found greater fulfillment by dedicating his life to faith, family and meaningful work. Rather than measuring success by box office numbers, Baldwin now defines it through the impact he can have on others and remains convinced that his best years are still ahead.
