Iran denies holding talks with US

Iran has dismissed reports of ongoing negotiations with the United States, saying there are currently no direct talks between the two countries, while confirming that discussions with Oman are focused solely on establishing a temporary maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the consultations with Oman are aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the strategic waterway and should not be interpreted as an agreement to fully reopen the strait. He maintained that the security situation in the region remains unchanged and insisted that any broader decision regarding the Strait of Hormuz would depend on regional developments.

Baghaei also said there are no plans for Iranian or American delegations to meet in the coming days, rejecting speculation that formal negotiations are currently underway.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington expected to begin talks with Iran and suggested that diplomatic efforts had prompted him to cancel a planned military operation. Trump said discussions involving Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran had encouraged the United States to pursue diplomacy instead of military action.

The US president said he preferred reaching a negotiated settlement but warned that military options remained available if diplomacy failed. He expressed hope that an agreement could eventually address both navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high despite renewed diplomatic efforts. Reports emerged that an explosion occurred near a commercial tanker off the coast of Oman. Maritime authorities said the vessel and its crew were safe, while an investigation into the incident is underway.

In another development, Iraq’s state oil marketing company reportedly offered significant discounts on Basrah crude exports to encourage buyers to lift cargoes from facilities inside the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting continuing uncertainty in regional energy markets.

Iran also announced the execution of two men convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, saying they had provided sensitive military information to foreign operatives.

The uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continues to affect global energy markets. The waterway handles a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making any disruption a major concern for international trade and energy security.

    Internet services restored in AJK after six weeks

    Internet services have started to return to Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after remaining suspended for nearly six weeks. The restoration process has begun in phases, with partial internet connectivity restored in the Mirpur Division. According to official sources, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) initiated the restoration of internet services following directives from the federal government. The decision comes after a prolonged suspension that had disrupted daily life across the region. Internet services had been suspended throughout Azad Kashmir since June 5 because of concerns over the law and order situation. During the shutdown, residents were unable to access online communication, digital banking, educational platforms and many government and business services. The suspension also affected students, traders, freelancers and people who rely on the internet for work and communication. Sources said the restoration is being carried out gradually to ensure that security concerns are addressed while communication services are resumed. Mirpur Division is the first region where internet access has started to function again, while authorities are expected to expand the restoration process to other districts in the coming days. The prolonged internet shutdown had sparked concern among citizens and political leaders. Many people demanded the restoration of digital services, saying the suspension had created serious difficulties for businesses, educational institutions and the general public. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also called on the government to restore internet services in Azad Kashmir. According to data released by France’s national health agency, Santé publique France, 21,674 total deaths from all causes were registered between 17 June and 2 July across the affected regions. Under normal conditions, statistical modeling projected approximately 15,910 deaths for that period, resulting in 5,764 additional or excess deaths, a 36 per cent increase above expected baselines. Public health officials attribute the sharp rise in mortality to the intensity, early onset, and duration of the extreme temperatures, which affected 92 administrative departments representing nearly 98.5 per cent of the country’s population. Over half of the excess deaths occurred during the peak of the heatwave between 25 June and 27 June, with individuals aged 75 and older accounting for roughly two-thirds of the fatalities. The Île-de-France region, which encompasses Paris, recorded the highest impact, experiencing nearly 2,000 excess deaths, an 80 per cent surge above normal levels. The preliminary figures mark the highest excess mortality recorded from a heatwave in France since the historic 2003 heatwave. Authorities noted that the initial tally surpasses total summer heat-related excess deaths from the entire previous year, with consolidated final figures expected following the conclusion of summer health monitoring in the autumn.

    PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan has strongly criticised restrictions on meetings with former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, saying the party will continue its legal, constitutional and political efforts to protect his health and fundamental rights. Speaking on Tuesday, Jan said the presence of a large number of PTI parliamentarians outside the Supreme Court reflected the party’s determination to ensure that Imran Khan receives proper medical care and access to his family and doctors. He described reports about the former prime minister’s health as deeply concerning and said denying him his constitutional and legal rights was unacceptable. Jan alleged that Imran Khan had been kept in detention through what the PTI considers politically motivated cases. The minister said PTI would not remain silent and would continue pressing for appropriate medical treatment, access to personal physicians and meetings with family members. He particularly criticised the reported denial of permission for Imran Khan’s sisters to meet him, calling the restrictions a violation of constitutional and legal rights as well as court directives. Jan said KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had already warned that PTI lawmakers would gather outside Adiala Jail on Thursday if Imran Khan’s sisters were again prevented from meeting him. Meanwhile, speaking to a private television channel on Monday, Afridi said the party had been left with little choice but to protest after its concerns were allegedly ignored by authorities.     Monsoon rains trigger flood warnings across Pakistan

    Persistent monsoon rains continued to lash several parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, triggering fresh flood alerts, increasing river flows, and prompting disaster management authorities to remain on high alert as another spell of rain is expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), weak monsoon currents are currently affecting the country’s upper and eastern regions, while a westerly weather system continues to influence northwestern areas. The department has forecast humid weather across much of Pakistan, with rain and thunderstorms likely in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Punjab through Wednesday. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) reported that the Indus River remains in a low flood situation at Kalabagh and Chashma, while water levels in all other major rivers are currently within normal limits or below the low-flood threshold. Authorities believe the overall hydrological situation is expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours, although scattered rainfall in the upper catchments may slightly increase river flows. Chenab River Under Close Watch Officials are closely monitoring the Chenab River after India released additional water from the Baglihar Dam following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the river. According to available reports, three spillway gates of the dam were opened on Monday, adding to the two spillways that had already been opened several days earlier, resulting in higher downstream water flows. In response, the FFD has issued a low to medium flood alert for Head Marala during the next 24 hours. The latest hydrological data shows inflows of approximately 93,900 cusecs, while outflows stand at around 76,200 cusecs. Forecasts indicate inflows may range between 80,000 and 100,000 cusecs, with the river expected to remain in the low flood category. Heavy Rainfall Recorded Across the Country During the last 24 hours, widespread rainfall was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. Among the highest rainfall recorded by the PMD, Saidu Sharif received 86 millimetres, Kakul 71 millimetres, and Faisalabad 77 millimetres. Meanwhile, Sibbi remained the hottest city in the country with a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. The FFD’s rainfall monitoring system recorded exceptionally heavy downpours in Faisalabad, where Ghulam Muhammad Abad Water Works received 126 millimetres of rain, while the WASA Head Office recorded 123 millimetres. Significant rainfall was also reported in Lahore, Sialkot, Gujrat, and several surrounding areas. PDMA Warns of Urban Flooding and Landslides Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) stated that monsoon rains affected most districts of the province over the past day. The authority said advance planning, timely deployment of drainage machinery, and emergency response teams helped clear accumulated rainwater from urban areas despite the heavy showers. The PDMA warned that the current monsoon spell is likely to continue until August 5, with additional rainfall in upper catchment areas expected to increase water levels in eastern rivers and seasonal streams. Authorities have cautioned that urban flooding remains a significant risk in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan. At the same time, the possibility of landslides persists in Murree, Galliyat, and other mountainous regions due to continuous rainfall. Authorities Urge Public to Take Precautions Disaster management authorities have established flood relief camps in vulnerable districts to facilitate emergency response if required. Residents living near riverbanks, seasonal streams, and flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to safer locations as a precaution.
