Iran rejects Hormuz plan as US intercepts missiles

WASHINGTON: Regional tensions intensified on Wednesday after Iran rejected Oman’s proposal for jointly managed shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States said it intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles allegedly launched towards American forces in the Middle East.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Muscat had proposed dividing the Strait of Hormuz transit route equally between Iranian and Omani territorial waters. However, Tehran instead suggested that shipping passing through Iranian waters should remain under its control, while Oman would oversee only part of the route on its side. He warned that if Oman declined the proposal, the strategic waterway would remain closed.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors and a vital route for global energy exports, making any disruption a significant concern for international trade and regional security.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command announced that its forces had intercepted several ballistic missiles launched by Iran in what Washington described as an attempted surprise attack on US military personnel stationed in the Middle East. Although the exact target was not disclosed, Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had fired missiles at a US military base and a Central Command facility in Jordan, claiming the strikes were retaliation for recent American actions against Iranian interests.

US President Donald Trump said diplomatic contacts with Tehran had shown positive signs but warned that military action could resume if negotiations failed to produce results. Iran, however, denied reports suggesting it was preparing to restart direct talks with Washington.

The conflict has also spilled into neighbouring countries. Jordan confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted five missiles entering its airspace early Wednesday, marking the third consecutive day of aerial threats against the kingdom. No casualties or property damage were reported.

In response to the escalating crisis, Gulf nations intensified diplomatic coordination. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held separate discussions with his counterparts from Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, with all sides stressing the importance of reducing regional tensions and ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The ministers also condemned attacks attributed to Iran and its allied armed groups.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) strongly criticised repeated attacks on Saudi Arabia, describing them as a serious violation of the kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to regional stability. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi reaffirmed the bloc’s full support for Saudi Arabia and urged stronger regional cooperation to prevent further escalation.

The European Union also expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas discussed Gulf tensions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, calling for renewed diplomacy while also raising concerns over Iran’s military support for Russia and the temporary detention of two French diplomats in Tehran.

China appealed for restraint, urging all parties to resolve disputes through dialogue while safeguarding freedom of navigation in international waterways. Beijing reiterated its support for peaceful solutions and respect for the sovereignty of regional states.

Separately, Iran’s IRGC Navy announced that it had intercepted and halted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after the vessels allegedly ignored official warnings. Iranian authorities did not disclose the ships’ identities or provide further details regarding the alleged violations.

Iran also rejected accusations linking it to projectiles fired at targets inside Saudi Arabia from other countries, insisting that attributing every attack on US interests in the region to Tehran was a serious miscalculation.

The latest developments highlight growing instability across the Gulf, with military confrontations, diplomatic efforts and concerns over maritime security continuing to shape one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints.

Did a Japanese man really spend Rs220 crore to become a dog?

A viral claim suggesting that a Japanese millionaire spent Rs220 crore on surgeries to transform himself into a dog has been debunked, with available information indicating that the story is based on a highly realistic costume rather than any medical procedure. The claim recently gained traction on social media alongside a video showing a man appearing to move and behave like a dog. Posts circulating online alleged that a 26-year-old Japanese millionaire, reportedly identified as “Jaso”, had undergone expensive surgeries to permanently alter his body and acquire a canine appearance. However, there is no credible evidence that the man underwent such surgeries or spent anything close to Rs220 crore on a physical transformation. The viral story appears to have originated from a genuine case involving a Japanese man known online as “Toco”. He attracted international attention after fulfilling his long-held dream of experiencing life as a dog. Toco commissioned Japanese modelling and sculpting company Zeppet to design an extremely realistic Collie costume. The outfit was specially created to resemble the appearance of a real dog and reportedly cost around 2 million Japanese yen, equivalent to approximately Rs11–12 lakh. The costume was designed with considerable attention to detail, allowing Toco to convincingly appear as a Collie when wearing it. Videos and photographs of him using the costume subsequently spread widely across social media. The transformation, however, was entirely temporary. Toco did not undergo surgery, alter his body permanently or medically transform himself into an animal. Instead, he uses the elaborate costume as part of a personal hobby and to fulfil a childhood fascination with experiencing life from an animal’s perspective. The dramatic Rs220-crore figure appears to have been added or distorted as the original story circulated online. The huge difference between the reported cost of the costume and the alleged surgical expenditure highlights how the original account was exaggerated on social media. The viral video may therefore give viewers the impression that a person has physically transformed into a dog, but the available details point to a sophisticated costume rather than surgery or permanent physical modification.

Nawaz Sharif heading LHAR to give old Lahore a new…

Lahore’s old city is going through a major change under a heritage revival plan, and the project has now been placed directly under the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-(N) leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. According to a recent notification issued by the Punjab government’s Local Government and Community Development Department, Nawaz Sharif has been made chairman of the newly formed board of the Lahore Heritage Area Revival project, also known as (LHAR) and patron-in-chief of the Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority (PWCHAA) Earlier, Nawaz Sharif only held the position of chief patron of the project. This meant he could give advice but had no formal powers. Under the new rules, the project’s legal structure has been changed, and a proper board has been formed. This board is now headed directly by the three-time former prime minister. The notification was published in the Punjab Gazette on July 23. It was issued under Section 8-A of the Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority Act 2012. The notification was approved by the governor of Punjab. With this change, the Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board has been formally established. The board now has full executive and administrative powers. Officials say this step was taken to remove bureaucratic delays in restoring the city’s historic fabric. The heritage revival areas cover Mughal, Sikh and colonial-era sites. Details of the ongoing work will be shared soon. Several government departments are working together on the project. These include the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency, known as TEPA, C&W and PWCHAA. TEPA is handling infrastructure work, such as building basements and parking. The PWCHAA is handling the restoration of old buildings. A major part of the plan is to turn old city streets into pedestrian zones. This includes the route from New Anarkali to Paan Gali in Lohari. It also includes Bora Bazaar, which has Bakshi Market inside it. Another walking route will run from Kacheri Chowk to Anarkali and then onward to Neela Gumbad. To name a few. Many buildings along these routes are old. All of them are being restored as part of the project. One of the biggest parts of the plan is a new public space called Neela Gumbad Square, where a two-floor underground parking garage is being built; it will become a place for families to walk and gather. Fountains and seating areas will be added. The Parks and Horticulture Authority will help plant trees and grass in the area. Other nearby heritage sites are also being restored. These include Ewing Hall and the first Bank of India building. The mosque near Neela Gumbad is also being renovated, while some roads nearby will be closed for traffic. LHAR spokesperson also responded to earlier criticism in media reports, where past reports only mentioned TEPA, even though other departments were also doing important work on the ground. The project now has a monitoring cell in place to track progress and check timely completion. The spokesperson further said that shopkeepers near Neela Gumbad were paid compensation a year before their shops were relocated. The officials had collected data on each shop’s daily business and income before deciding how much compensation to give; this was done so shopkeepers would not lose their livelihood during construction. With Nawaz Sharif now in the driving seat and his past records of completing mega projects on time, officials believe the project will move forward faster. The government says the goal is to restore Lahore’s historic buildings and streets while creating new public spaces for residents and visitors.

Mir Raza allegedly kidnapped and tortured for 12 h…

KARACHI: The investigation into the death of young businessman Mir Raza has taken a new turn after his family’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, claimed that the victim was allegedly abducted and tortured for around 12 hours before he was killed. Speaking at a press conference alongside Mir Raza’s parents at their residence, Nasir said information gathered during the investigation had raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death. According to the lawyer, CCTV footage showing Mir Raza emerged on July 28, while his body was recovered the following day. Nasir said a chemical analysis report from the University of Karachi found evidence of acid on the victim’s clothing, along with what he described as a bullet mark from the rear side of the shirt. Nasir further claimed that the condition of Mir Raza’s face was not simply the result of decomposition but may have been caused by acid. He also alleged that the victim was given a local anesthetic or another substance that caused him to become unconscious. The lawyer said the body appeared to have been dead for approximately 20 to 22 hours when it was recovered. Based on that estimated timeline, he argued that Mir Raza may have remained in captivity for around 12 hours before his death. Nasir alleged that the businessman was abducted during that period and subjected to torture. These claims have not yet been independently established and remain part of the allegations surrounding the investigation. The lawyer also raised questions about Mir Raza’s digital devices and financial activity. He claimed that someone had accessed the victim’s phone and emptied a cryptocurrency account, allegedly in an attempt to create an impression that Mir Raza had been facing financial difficulties or was in debt. Nasir further questioned the handling of key evidence, claiming that the station house officer was carrying the digital video recorder (DVR), while Mir Raza’s smartwatch and mobile phone were reportedly in the possession of other individuals. The allegations have intensified scrutiny of the investigation as Mir Raza’s family seeks answers about his final hours and the circumstances leading to his death. Investigators are expected to examine CCTV recordings, forensic reports, digital devices, financial transactions and other evidence to establish a detailed timeline. Police have yet to publicly establish the full circumstances of Mir Raza’s death or identify those responsible. The allegations made by his family’s lawyer will need to be verified through forensic evidence and the ongoing investigation.

    Gold prices rise in Pakistan

KARACHI: Gold prices climbed in Pakistan on Monday, even though international gold rates experienced a slight decline. The increase in local prices was mainly attributed to continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict, concerns over rising inflation, and investor caution ahead of key US economic data expected later this week. According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, the price of 24-karat gold increased by Rs1,700 per tola, taking it to Rs428,436. Similarly, the price of 10 grams of goldrose by Rs1,457, reaching Rs367,314. The latest increase came after a significant decline on Saturday, when gold prices had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736. In contrast, the international gold market remained under slight pressure. Spot gold slipped by 0.1% to $4,037.01 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery declined by 0.3% to $4,035.80 per ounce during trading. Despite the minor drop, analysts believe global investors remain cautious because of ongoing geopolitical tensions and expectations of fresh economic developments in the United States. Silver prices in Pakistan also moved higher. The price of silver gained Rs54 per tola, taking it to Rs6,291, reflecting continued demand for precious metals in the local market. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, said that international gold prices had eased slightly after fluctuating throughout the trading session. According to him, gold touched a high of $4,080 per ounce before falling to a low of$4,019, eventually stabilising near $4,038. He noted that gold remains under pressure and the market is closely monitoring upcoming US economic indicators, particularly employment data, which could influence the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy decisions. Agar added that gold has remained within a broad trading range of approximately $3,950 to $4,250 per ounce since June. However, he expects this range to break within the next one or two weeks, potentially leading to a stronger upward or downward price movement depending on market conditions. Market participants are now awaiting a series of important US labour market reports, as these will provide further insight into the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold, while expectations of rate cuts tend to support bullion prices. Another factor attracting attention in the global market is reports that South Korea’s central bank intends to purchase gold from domestic producers, a move that could provide additional support to demand in the coming months. Meanwhile, oil markets have also remained highly volatile. Brent crude futures surged by more than 20% last month, driven largely by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns that higher energy prices could fuel inflation worldwide. Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, said gold has traded within a narrow range of $4,000 to $4,200 per ounce for over a month. He explained that the possibility of inflation picking up again, particularly after July’s economic data, is helping support gold prices despite the recent weakness. Separately, the Pakistani rupee posted another modest gain against the US dollar. The local currency appreciated by 0.01%, closing at Rs277.77 per dollar, compared with Rs277.80 at the end of the previous trading session, reflecting continued stability in the foreign exchange market.
