Karachi: At least 603 people have lost their lives in different traffic accidents across Karachi this year, according to data released by Rescue authorities. Thousands of others have suffered injuries in road crashes, highlighting the continuing traffic safety challenges faced by the city.

According to Rescue officials, 7,467 people were injured in traffic accidents during the year. The victims include people from different age groups and both genders.

Of the 603 people who died in road accidents, 463 were men, 73 were women and 67 were children. The figures show that men made up the majority of fatalities, while women and children also suffered significant losses in road crashes.

Rescue authorities said heavy vehicles were involved in a considerable number of fatal accidents. A total of 184 people were killed in accidents involving heavy vehicles during the year.

According to the available data, 12 people lost their lives after being hit by dumpers. Trailer-related accidents claimed the lives of 84 people, making trailers one of the major contributors to fatalities involving heavy vehicles.

Water tankers were also involved in several deadly accidents. Rescue officials reported that 46 people were killed in accidents involving water tankers during the year.

Meanwhile, 18 people died in accidents involving mini-trucks, while 24 people were killed in accidents involving buses.

The injury figures are also significant. Of the 7,467 people injured in traffic accidents, 5,649 were men, 1,322 were women and 496 were children.

The data underscores the scale of road safety concerns in Karachi, where busy roads, increasing traffic and the movement of heavy vehicles have contributed to serious accidents. The high number of fatalities and injuries has renewed concerns about traffic management and road safety measures in the city.

      Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed all federal and provincial authorities to remain on maximum alert and maintain full preparedness to tackle any emergency resulting from the ongoing monsoon rains and the flood situation affecting different parts of the country. The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday to assess the impact of the current monsoon spell and evaluate the government’s response to flooding and related emergencies. During the meeting, the Prime Minister directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to maintain close coordination with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and provincial governments. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that weather forecasts and monsoon-related alerts are shared promptly with all relevant federal and provincial institutions to support timely decision-making and emergency response. Shehbaz Sharif also tasked Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal with chairing daily meetings of the Flood Committee to closely monitor the evolving situation, review developments, and recommend appropriate measures to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding. Highlighting the risks in Pakistan’s mountainous regions, the Prime Minister stressed that the early warning system for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and flash floods must remain fully operational. He underscored the need for constant vigilance in vulnerable northern areas where melting glaciers continue to pose a serious threat. The Prime Minister noted that although Pakistan contributes only a small fraction to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains one of the countries most severely affected by climate change. He said the government is actively implementing short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies aimed at reducing the country’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters and strengthening resilience against extreme weather events. Shehbaz Sharif instructed the NDMA, in collaboration with all relevant departments, to take every possible measure to protect lives, safeguard property, and strengthen disaster response efforts throughout the ongoing monsoon season. The meeting was attended by NDMA officials and chief secretaries from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Participants received detailed briefings on recent rainfall, the extent of damages, and the progress of rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations. Officials informed the meeting that the NDMA is providing full logistical support and resources to provincial governments to manage flood-related emergencies in northern regions, while also assisting authorities in responding to the ongoing heatwave affecting Sindh and Balochistan. The participants were also briefed that another heavy spell of monsoon rainfall is expected over the next two days in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and southern Sindh. A further nationwide spell of significant rainfall is forecast for the second week of September. The meeting was informed that the Flood Committee established on the Prime Minister’s instructions continues to hold regular meetings to monitor the situation and ensure the effective implementation of rescue, relief, and rehabilitation measures across the country. According to the latest figures presented during the briefing, the current monsoon season has claimed 110 lives, injured 360 people, damaged 796 houses, and caused the death of 376 livestock. Officials also highlighted that the ongoing El Niño phenomenon has accelerated glacier melting in Pakistan’s northern regions, increasing the likelihood of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods and flash floods over the coming month. Authorities have already identified high-risk areas and are taking preventive measures to reduce potential damage. The meeting was further informed that immediate action has helped bring urban flooding under control in central Punjab, including Lahore, while drainage operations continue in agricultural areas affected by floodwaters. Authorities also confirmed that the flood situation in Dera Ghazi Khan and nearby districts remains under control. Officials reported that timely operations have led to the reopening of roads at 106 locations, restoring connectivity in affected areas. The meeting was also told that the National Emergency and Telecommunication Centre, established by the Ministry of Information Technology, is fully operational, enabling Rescue 1122 teams to respond quickly to emergency calls from any mobile phone across the country. In addition, authorities have identified 700 locations nationwide for rainwater storage during the monsoon season. The initiative aims to conserve water for agricultural use during dry periods while improving long-term water management and climate resilience.

Concerns intensified after the United States indicated that economic pressure on Iran could be increased, including the possibility of extending a naval blockade. Analysts warned that any significant escalation in the conflict could cause a much sharper increase in energy prices by threatening supplies from the region. Market strategist Kyle Rodda of Capital.com said geopolitical uncertainty remained a major obstacle for financial markets despite otherwise supportive economic conditions. Investors have so far absorbed considerable uncertainty without demanding substantially higher risk premiums, but analysts cautioned that this balance could change quickly if tensions worsen.     Ukraine urges faster missile support as envoy pushes for stronger air defences

    Ukraine has renewed its appeal for advanced air defence missiles, warning that the country urgently needs stronger protection against Russian ballistic missile attacks before winter arrives. Speaking in Washington, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, said diplomatic efforts to end the war are continuing, but military support remains essential as Russian strikes intensify. Stefanishyna said Ukraine hopes renewed ceasefire discussions with Russia could help bring an end to the conflict before the harsh winter season. However, she stressed that negotiations alone will not protect civilians from the increasing number of missile attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. She said the country urgently requires additional Patriot PAC 3 interceptor missiles to strengthen its air defence system. According to the ambassador, Ukraine is in talks with the Pentagon about obtaining a licence to manufacture Patriot PAC 3 missiles domestically. She acknowledged that such a project would take considerable time, with production possibly beginning anywhere between one and five years after approval. Ukrainian officials are also discussing a long term purchasing arrangement that would allow the country to secure future missile supplies by exchanging production slots with another customer. Stefanishyna revealed that representatives from Raytheon, the company that produces the Patriot air defence system, have already visited Ukraine. She added that Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the PAC 3 interceptor missiles, is preparing to send a team of specialists to the country to explore possible cooperation. Describing the current security situation, the ambassador said Russia has sharply increased its use of ballistic missiles during overnight attacks. She noted that recent waves of strikes have included between 30 and 40 ballistic missiles in a single night. While Ukraine has become more effective at intercepting drones supplied or produced by Russia and Iran, it still lacks enough advanced missile systems to counter large scale ballistic attacks. Stefanishyna said Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to expand missile production while maintaining pressure on Ukrainian cities. She argued that Ukraine has adapted successfully in many areas of the conflict but still requires additional missile defences to protect the population during the coming winter months. The renewed request for military assistance follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the White House earlier this week. During the talks, Zelensky sought greater support for Ukraine’s air defence capabilities while also encouraging a fresh diplomatic effort aimed at ending the war. The ambassador said the latest peace initiative could include a visit to Kyiv by senior United States representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Although no official date has been announced, she said the visit could take place as early as next week if preparations are completed. Stefanishyna also said Zelensky has repeated Ukraine’s proposal for a ceasefire based on the current front lines, with negotiations continuing from that point. She stressed that meaningful progress is needed before winter because colder weather will make both military operations and humanitarian conditions more difficult. The ambassador also addressed reports about her own future in government. She confirmed that she had offered to resign from her position and return to Ukraine to respond personally to corruption allegations related to her financial declarations. Stefanishyna said President Zelensky had not requested her resignation and preferred that she remain in her role. However, she believes returning home is the best way to defend herself and her family against the accusations while the legal process moves forward.
