Khawaja Asif urges Mohsin Naqvi to start system re…

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has advised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to begin efforts for changing the system by ensuring the implementation of the National Action Plan and improving performance within his own ministry.

Reacting to Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks about weaknesses in the existing system, Khawaja Asif said he personally agrees to a large extent with the concerns raised by the interior minister. However, he emphasized that meaningful reforms should be pursued through constitutional and legal platforms, particularly Parliament and the cabinet.

In a statement shared on social media, Khawaja Asif said that discussions about major reforms would produce better results if they were presented on parliamentary forums. He added that Parliament provides the appropriate platform for strengthening institutions and bringing sustainable changes through a constitutional process.

The defence minister described Mohsin Naqvi as a powerful figure within the government and said that he should use his position to initiate practical reforms. He suggested that the process of system improvement should begin from the Interior Ministry and through the implementation of the National Action Plan.

Khawaja Asif said that the evolution of the current system has been influenced by group and personal interests over several decades, and there is now a need to make institutions stronger and more independent. He stressed that reforms should not remain limited to statements but should be translated into practical measures.

He further stated that important national issues should be discussed in constitutional forums such as Parliament and cabinet meetings. According to him, involving these institutions would strengthen the system, while discussions outside constitutional platforms may not have the same impact or acceptance.

The defence minister also referred to the National Action Plan and said that out of the 13 points highlighted by the military leadership, the points related to the armed forces are being implemented through significant sacrifices. However, he claimed that several points under the responsibility of the Interior Ministry still require progress.

Khawaja Asif urged Mohsin Naqvi to take the first step toward system reform by focusing on responsibilities already assigned to his ministry. He said that not only the business community but the entire nation would support genuine efforts aimed at improving governance and strengthening national institutions.

He concluded that while discussions on reform are important, real change requires consistent action, institutional cooperation, and progress through established constitutional mechanisms.

Sindh information minister Sharjeel Memon accuses …

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has alleged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is attempting to secure power in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) through electoral manipulation rather than the democratic process Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Memon strongly criticized the ruling party’s political approach and accused its leadership of relying on what he described as “backdoor” methods to gain power. He claimed that the PML-N was now trying to repeat the same strategy in Azad Kashmir ahead of the upcoming political developments in the region. “The Pakistan Muslim League-N wants to come to power in Azad Kashmir through rigging,” Memon said while addressing journalists. He argued that free and fair elections are essential for maintaining public trust in democratic institutions and urged all stakeholders to ensure transparency in the electoral process. During the press conference, Memon also took aim at former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He alleged that Nawaz Sharif had himself entered power through what he called the “backdoor,” adding that Maryam Nawaz had followed the same path. Referring to one of her recent public remarks, Memon criticized her statement asking, “When will the Day of Judgment come?” He said such expressions should not be used by political leaders, arguing that they were inappropriate in public discourse. The Sindh minister emphasized that politicians should exercise caution in their choice of words and avoid making statements that could create unnecessary controversy or distract from issues affecting the public. He said political leaders have a responsibility to maintain respectful and constructive dialogue, particularly during periods of heightened political activity. Memon also spoke about the challenges facing Karachi, describing the country’s largest city as unique in both its size and complexity. “Karachi has many challenges because Karachi is not just a city—it is like a country,” he remarked. He said the metropolis faces a wide range of issues, including infrastructure demands, traffic congestion, rapid population growth, and the need for improved public services. According to Memon, the Sindh government continues to work on addressing these longstanding challenges through development projects and administrative reforms. He stressed that managing Karachi requires coordinated efforts from both provincial and federal institutions due to the city’s economic significance and its role as Pakistan’s commercial hub. The press conference primarily focused on the current political environment, electoral transparency, and governance issues. Memon reiterated that democratic values must be upheld and that any attempt to influence election outcomes unfairly would undermine public confidence in the political system. His remarks come amid increasing political activity across the country, with parties positioning themselves ahead of future elections and regional political contests. The statements are expected to draw responses from the Pakistan Muslim League-N, which has previously rejected similar allegations and maintained that it believes in democratic and constitutional processes. The comments made by Sharjeel Memon add to the ongoing political debate in Pakistan, where electoral integrity, governance, and accountability continue to dominate public discussion. As political tensions persist, attention remains focused on ensuring transparent elections and promoting constructive political dialogue across the country.

Kremlin claims capture of two key eastern Ukrainian villages

Russian military forces have claimed control over two settlements in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, according to statements released by the Russian Defence Ministry via state media. The ministry reported that its troops captured Vasyutinske, located near Kramatorsk, alongside Toretsk, situated southwest of Druzhkivka. Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the loss of either location, and battlefield reports remain unverified independently. While frontlines across the 1,200-kilometre border have experienced minimal overall shifts in recent months, Russian forces continue an incremental westward push through the region. Ukrainian war-monitoring group DeepState reported additional Russian advances near Illinivka outside Kostiantynivka, as well as movements near Chasiv Yar, west of Bakhmut. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that its troops successfully repelled 24 individual assaults around Kostiantynivka and Illinivka. Russian commanders previously claimed control of Kostiantynivka, a statement contested by Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not address frontline shifts directly in his nightly address, but commended Ukrainian units engaged in heavy combat around Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, and Kramatorsk.

Pakistan announces Hajj 2027 packages, 107,526 government seats

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced the initial arrangements for Hajj 2027, allocating 107,526 seats under the Government Hajj Scheme and introducing a fully digital application and payment system aimed at making the pilgrimage process easier and more transparent for applicants. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said the government has set the estimated cost of the 40-day Hajj package at Rs1.2 million, while the 20 to 25-day package will cost Rs1.3 million. According to the minister, the Hajj 2027 process has been transformed into an end-to-end digital system on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the Ministry of Religious Affairs working in coordination with the Ministry of Information Technology and the National IT Board. The new arrangements are designed to allow intending pilgrims to complete most of the necessary procedures without repeatedly visiting government offices or banks. Applicants will be able to submit their Hajj applications from their homes, deposit the required dues through digital channels and access information and other facilities through the Pak Hajj App and Hajj Portal. Yousaf said the ministry’s primary objective was to reduce the difficulties traditionally faced by pilgrims during the application process. He said the digital system would help eliminate lengthy queues, unnecessary journeys and waiting periods while also making the overall process more convenient for applicants. First instalment to be collected from August 17 The minister announced that the first phase of payments under the approved Hajj Policy 2027 would begin on August 17. Applicants selected under the relevant phase will be required to deposit 50% of the total package cost as the first instalment. The government will subsequently demand the second instalment during the first week of October. The authorities have also opened the final application phase for Hajj 2027. Around 400,000 pilgrims who have already completed the pre-registration process will now be eligible to proceed with their formal applications. Officials expect the digital registration mechanism to simplify verification and reduce delays as the large number of pre-registered applicants move into the next stage. Passport information to be verified digitally The Religious Affairs Ministry has also established a data-sharing arrangement with the Passport Office as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the digital Hajj registration system. Through the integration, applicants’ passport information can be verified more efficiently, potentially reducing paperwork and manual intervention during the application process. Yousaf said linking databases of different government institutions would improve the accuracy and speed of processing while increasing transparency. The minister maintained that the use of digital verification would also reduce the possibility of errors arising from manual data entry and repeated documentation. HBL named banking partner Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has been designated as the authorised banking partner for the Government Hajj Scheme. According to the minister, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and HBL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the banking arrangements associated with Hajj applications and payment of dues. Pilgrims will have three digital payment options available under the government scheme. They can pay through a OneLink PSID, use a credit or debit card, or download a digital challan through the Pak Hajj App and deposit the required amount at any HBL branch. The government has stressed that applicants should use only the officially prescribed channels when making payments. Seats to be confirmed on first-come, first-served basis Under the Government Hajj Scheme, applicants who successfully deposit the required amount through the online payment system will have their seats confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the allocated seats are filled, the authorities will stop accepting further payments for that category. The government has separately allocated 30,000 seats for the Short Hajj Scheme. Online payments for the short-duration package will be closed once the allocated quota is exhausted. Authorities have also outlined arrangements for applicants who are unable to secure a seat during the current phase. If the available Hajj 2027 quota is filled, remaining registered applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the following year. At the same time, registration for the Hajj 2028-2030 period will continue according to the announced policy. The minister said details concerning the 10% payment requirement for the Long-Term Hajj Scheme would be announced after completion of the current application phase. Private Hajj Scheme gets 71,684 seats Alongside the government programme, the federal government has allocated 71,684 seats for the Private Hajj Scheme for 2027. Under the new digital mechanism, pilgrims opting for the private scheme will be able to compare packages offered by 25 government-approved authorised Hajj organisers. The available packages and participating companies will be displayed through the official Hajj Portal and Pak Hajj App, allowing intending pilgrims to choose an organiser and package according to their preferences. The government has made it clear that the selection of private Hajj organisers and payments must also be completed through the designated official digital system. Pilgrims warned against direct payments The Religious Affairs Ministry has issued a specific warning to intending pilgrims against handing over money directly to private Hajj operators or tour companies. Yousaf said any payment or financial transaction conducted outside the officially designated government system would not be recognised. Pilgrims have therefore been advised to verify the status of Hajj organisers through the official digital platform before making any payment. The government believes that centralising the selection and payment process through the digital Hajj system will help protect pilgrims from potential fraud, unauthorised operators and disputes over payments.
