MIAMI: Inter Miami suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Monterrey in the Leagues Cup on Saturday, with Lionel Messi absent as he travelled to Argentina following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

The match began with an emotional tribute to Messi’s father, who died at the age of 68. Both teams observed a minute of silence before kick-off, while Inter Miami expressed its support for their captain and his family.

Despite missing their star player, Miami looked set for another positive result after Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. The Argentine midfielder celebrated in a particularly touching manner, removing his No. 7 shirt to reveal a No. 10 underneath as a tribute to Messi.

The hosts carried their 1-0 advantage into half-time, but Monterrey quickly changed the momentum after the break.

For Messi, however, football understandably took a back seat as he returned to Argentina to be with his family following his father’s death.

Security officials emphasised that the ongoing operations are aimed at eliminating terrorist threats, restoring law and order, and ensuring lasting peace across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They reaffirmed that intelligence-led operations would continue until militant networks are dismantled and terrorism is eradicated. The latest operations are part of the broader Azm-e-Istehkam strategy launched to strengthen counterterrorism efforts nationwide. The medical fraternity pointed out that prior to Dr. Hajani’s arrival, the surgical unit in Thatta District was severely under-resourced and largely limited to minor procedures such as circumcisions. Through Dr.Mashoque’s tireless dedication and technical expertise, the department was rebuilt into a fully functional unit capable of performing major and complex operations, including laparotomies, directly within the district. “The transfer of such a sincere, highly capable, and dedicated surgeon is detrimental to both the institution and the public interest,” the statement read. “Depriving Civil Hospital Makli of his services will only result in medical delays and hardship for patients who cannot afford private or out-of-district care.” The delegation has urgently appealed to the senior leadership of the Health Department and relevant authorities to immediately revoke the transfer order, allowing Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani to continue his transformative work at Civil Hospital Makli.

    KP makes registration mandatory for street vendors

    PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has passed the Street Vendors Protection Bill 2026, making registration and vending certificates mandatory for people operating carts and roadside stalls across the province. The new law is expected to provide legal protection to more than 140,000 street vendors for the first time. Under the legislation, individuals aged 14 years and above will be eligible to register as street vendors. All vendors will be required to complete registration and obtain a valid vending certificate. Registered vendors will receive a modern digital vending certificate containing a QR code. The certificate is intended to formally recognise vendors and provide them with legal protection while carrying out their businesses. The law provides protection against unjustified eviction and harassment. Government employees found harassing street vendors could face strict departmental action. The legislation also introduces penalties for members of the public or shopkeepers who harass vendors. A person found guilty could face a fine of up to Rs20,000 or imprisonment for up to one month. Vendors will also have the right to appeal if their vending certificates are suspended or cancelled. The law prohibits vendors from selling or transferring their vending certificates to another person. Anyone violating this provision could face a fine of up to Rs3,000. The legislation also highlights the economic contribution of street vendors to the province. According to the bill, vendors collectively generate more than Rs380 billion in economic activity every year. The informal vending sector is estimated to contribute around Rs130 billion annually to the national economy. The government expects that better regulation and management of the sector could generate an additional Rs2.5 billion to Rs5 billion in annual revenue. The new legislation aims to bring the informal vending sector under a formal regulatory framework while providing vendors with legal recognition and protection.
