Nearly 600 Israeli settlers enter Al-Aqsa mosque c…

Nearly 600 Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Thursday under Israeli police protection, according to a local official cited by Anadolu Agency.

An official from Jerusalem’s Islamic Endowments Department said at least 584 settlers entered the compound during the morning period through the Moroccan Gate. The official added that additional groups were expected to enter after noon prayers.

Eyewitnesses reported that some of the incursions involved prayers, religious rituals and dancing. Such activities have become a source of heightened tension because of disputes surrounding the longstanding arrangements governing access and worship at the holy site.

The latest incident occurred on the first day of a new month in the Hebrew calendar, a period when Israeli settler visits to the compound have traditionally increased.

According to the report, Israel began allowing such entries into the compound in 2003. Since then, visits have taken place regularly, except on Fridays and Saturdays, with the number of participants increasing over the years.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is one of the most sensitive religious and political sites in Jerusalem. It is Islam’s third-holiest site and holds profound religious significance for Muslims around the world.

The site is also known to Jews as the Temple Mount, who associate the area with the historical location of two ancient Jewish temples. Competing religious and political claims over the site have contributed to repeated tensions in Jerusalem.

East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, was occupied by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Israel later annexed the entire city in 1980, a move that has not been recognised by the international community.

The latest entry of hundreds of Israeli settlers under police protection is likely to draw further attention amid the longstanding tensions surrounding access to and activities at the holy compound.

The incident underscores the continuing sensitivity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and its central role in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Pakistan’s health system requires lasting reform

By Raja Ashraf A country’s healthcare system is judged not only by the number of hospitals it has but also by whether people can access timely, affordable, and quality medical care. In Pakistan, public confidence in the health sector has weakened due to persistent challenges, including shortages of healthcare professionals, rising medicine prices, under-resourced hospitals, and the continued presence of unqualified medical practitioners. These issues require comprehensive and long-term reforms rather than short-term policy responses Healthcare is a fundamental right closely linked to Article 9 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantees the right to life. The Supreme Court has interpreted this provision to include access to essential healthcare services. Pakistan is also a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which commits the country to progressively ensuring the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for its citizens. One of the most pressing concerns is the shortage of qualified doctors in rural and underserved regions. Although medical institutions produce thousands of graduates every year, many public health facilities outside major cities continue to face vacant positions. As a result, many communities struggle to obtain even basic healthcare services and are often forced to travel long distances for treatment. The migration of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to foreign countries has further weakened the healthcare system. Better salaries, improved working conditions, career opportunities, and greater security abroad encourage many skilled professionals to leave Pakistan, creating significant gaps in public hospitals and specialized medical services. The pharmaceutical sector also faces increasing challenges. Some multinational pharmaceutical companies have reduced their presence in Pakistan, raising concerns about future medicine availability and investor confidence. While local pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to meet much of the country’s demand, policymakers must create a stable regulatory and economic environment that supports both domestic production and responsible international investment. The rising cost of medicines has become another major burden for families already affected by inflation. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases often require lifelong treatment, making affordability a growing concern. At the same time, the continued circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines highlights weaknesses in regulation and quality control, despite improvements in oversight by regulatory authorities. Public hospitals also frequently experience shortages of essential medicines and emergency supplies, forcing patients to purchase drugs from private pharmacies. This increases treatment costs and can delay critical medical care during emergencies. Ensuring uninterrupted medicine supplies in government hospitals should remain a national priority. Another persistent issue is the presence of unqualified medical practitioners, commonly known as quacks, particularly in areas where licensed healthcare providers are scarce. Tackling this problem requires stronger enforcement of existing laws alongside improved access to qualified medical professionals. Pakistan’s healthcare challenges extend beyond these issues to include inadequate public health funding, ageing hospital infrastructure, weak primary healthcare services, limited mental health facilities, and uneven implementation of health policies across provinces. Addressing these problems requires a comprehensive national strategy focused on increasing healthcare investment, improving working conditions for medical professionals, strengthening medicine regulation, modernizing pharmaceutical oversight, expanding preventive care, and reinforcing primary healthcare services. Investing in healthcare is not merely a public expense—it is an investment in human capital, economic growth, and national development. Pakistan possesses skilled healthcare professionals, reputable medical institutions, and a capable pharmaceutical industry. With sound policymaking, stronger governance, and sustained investment, these strengths can be transformed into a healthcare system that guarantees every citizen safe, affordable, and quality healthcare. The need for reform is no longer in question; the real challenge is ensuring that action is not delayed any further.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day overcomes leak fears as …

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven that even a major piracy leak cannot slow down one of Marvel’s biggest theatrical events in years. Just hours before the highly anticipated film officially premiered, a high-quality bootleg copy reportedly surfaced online and quickly spread across X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The leak sparked concerns that piracy could hurt the movie’s opening-day performance, with fans urged across social media to avoid spoilers and support the official theatrical release.  Despite those fears, the latest Spider-Man adventure bounced back in spectacular fashion. According to early box office figures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an astonishing $72 million in preview screenings, setting a new Marvel record. The figure surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million, which had been held by Avengers: Endgame since 2019. The milestone highlights the enormous excitement surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker and demonstrates that audience demand remained strong despite the piracy concerns.  Industry analysts now expect the film to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, with projections ranging between $260 million and $280 million worldwide. If those estimates hold, Brand New Day will cement itself as one of Marvel Studios’ most successful launches ever.  The overwhelming interest is hardly surprising. The film marks Holland’s first solo Spider-Man outing since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased his identity from the world. Living in isolation, Peter faces emotional challenges while confronting dangerous new enemies in a fresh chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Marvel has also benefited from an extensive promotional campaign leading up to the release. Earlier this year, the movie’s trailer generated unprecedented online attention, becoming the biggest trailer launch in history with more than 719 million views in its first 24 hours. That record later placed it ahead of the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, underlining just how much anticipation surrounded the Spider-Man sequel long before tickets went on sale.  The recent piracy incident nevertheless serves as another reminder of the growing challenge facing major Hollywood releases. High-profile films increasingly become targets for online leaks, forcing studios to step up security while encouraging audiences to experience blockbusters in theaters instead of through illegal copies.  For Marvel, however, the early results suggest the leak had little impact on audience enthusiasm. Instead of slowing momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past expectations, broken a long-standing Marvel preview record, and positioned itself as one of the defining box office successes of 2026.

Security personnel were deployed across sensitive areas to ensure a peaceful voting process. This phase of the elections covers nine constituencies in Muzaffarabad division. These include five constituencies in Muzaffarabad district and two each in Neelum and Jhelum Valley districts. At the same time, polling is also being held for 12 refugee constituencies representing refugees from the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region. More than 340 candidates are contesting the elections in this phase. According to election authorities, 207 candidates are in the race for the nine seats in Muzaffarabad division, while another 137 candidates are contesting the refugee constituencies. More than 809,000 registered voters are eligible to vote in Muzaffarabad division. The refugee constituencies have over 438,000 registered voters. Thousands of election staff have been deployed to conduct polling and oversee the voting process. Authorities have established 1,483 polling stations across Muzaffarabad division. Among them, 533 have been declared highly sensitive, 741 sensitive and 209 normal. In addition, 1,057 polling stations have been set up for refugee constituencies in different provinces. The refugee constituencies are spread across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan and Islamabad. Polling arrangements have been completed in all regions where registered refugee voters are residing. In Rawalpindi and Islamabad, around 27,000 registered voters are casting their votes for three refugee seats. Election officials have established 175 polling stations, while enhanced security has been provided at sensitive locations. In Gujrat, Wazirabad and Mandi Bahauddin, nearly 2,000 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order during polling. In Balochistan, polling stations have been established in Quetta, Pishin, Qila Saifullah, Hub, Loralai, Sibi, Mastung, Zhob and Barkhan for refugee voters. Similar arrangements have been made in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Swat and Mansehra, where polling is being held for another refugee seat. The second phase of the elections is taking place amid heightened political tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Relations between the coalition partners have remained strained since the first phase of polling, with both parties accusing each other of electoral irregularities in several constituencies. Senior leaders from both sides held multiple meetings in recent days in an effort to resolve the dispute. However, the talks failed to produce an agreement before the second phase of voting. The PPP has demanded legal action and re-polling in selected constituencies, while the PML-N has rejected allegations of organized rigging and maintained that the election results reflect the will of the voters. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met PML-N President Nawaz Sharif to review the political situation and discuss developments related to the AJK elections. Senior party leaders also attended the meeting and discussed the coalition’s future strategy.

Nicholas Hoult joins HBO’s Harry Potter as Gilderoy Lockhart

Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the magical world of Hogwarts, taking on the role of the charming but self-obsessed Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The casting news was confirmed by HBO Max on Tuesday, August 11, adding another high-profile name to the growing ensemble of the highly anticipated reboot. Hoult will portray the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in the show’s second season, succeeding Kenneth Branagh, who played the character in the original 2002 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced in the second Harry Potter story as a celebrated wizard who joins Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Known for his confidence, charm and flamboyant personality, Lockhart has gained fame for writing books about his supposed heroic achievements. However, his public image is far more impressive than his actual abilities. Throughout the story, his exaggerated claims and lack of competence become increasingly apparent, making him one of the more memorable and comedic characters in the Harry Potter universe. Hoult’s addition further strengthens the star-studded cast of HBO’s new adaptation. The series features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. The young stars leading the new generation of Hogwarts students include Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Their casting has generated significant interest as audiences prepare to see the beloved story retold for television. Production on the series began in July 2025, with the first season scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25. The adaptation is expected to explore J.K. Rowling’s original books in greater detail than the films, allowing more room for characters, storylines and events that were previously condensed or omitted. The Harry Potter franchise, however, continues to face controversy because of Rowling’s public comments about transgender issues. The author has faced criticism since 2020 over remarks that many viewed as transphobic. Rowling has rejected that characterization and has maintained that her views are focused on women’s rights. Despite the controversy surrounding the author, Rowling remains involved with the television adaptation as an executive producer. For Hoult, the Harry Potter role comes after another major franchise appearance. The actor recently portrayed Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman and is expected to return as the iconic villain in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. Hoult is also set to appear in How to Rob a Bank, which is slated for release on November 13, adding another major project to his increasingly busy film and television career.

Alzarri Joseph hits back at Daren Sammy over selection row

West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph has responded sharply to comments made by head coach Daren Sammy. The issue stems from his exclusion from the Test squad for the ongoing series against Pakistan. Joseph did not make the cut for the series. Cricket West Indies had initially explained his absence, citing personal reasons. Later, Sammy offered a different version. He said the pacer had declined the chance to play. Speaking to a Caribbean news outlet, Joseph addressed Sammy’s remarks directly. He said he had already spoken with both Sammy and Cricket West Indies about the matter. He pointed out that the official statement clearly mentioned personal reasons. Given Sammy’s long experience in the game, Joseph said the coach would have known exactly how his comments might land publicly. He added that he had nothing more to say on the issue. The 29-year-old then turned to his fitness struggles. He explained that he has been out of action for a full year. This followed a second stress fracture, which kept him away from international cricket at full intensity for a long stretch. Joseph called Sammy’s remarks controversial. He argued that his body simply was not ready for the physical demands of a Test series. He recalled recent conversations about his workload. This included playing two Test matches alongside five back-to-back ODIs against New Zealand earlier this month. He said he personally knew his body needed time before taking on another long format series. Without proper context, he felt the statement gave an incomplete picture of the situation. Despite the disagreement, Joseph made his priorities clear. He said his focus remains firmly on his job. He is representing the West Indies, not any individual, including the head coach. He added that he is not there to build friendships. His only goal, he said, is to work hard and represent the people of the West Indies. On the field, West Indies currently lead the two-match Test series 1-0. A win in the second Test would give them their first series victory over Pakistan since 2000. This adds even more weight to a contest that has already stirred plenty of conversation off the field. As the series heads toward its conclusion, all attention now shifts to how this selection controversy might shape team dynamics going forward, both on and off the pitch.

Body fat new study reveals its crucial role in met…

A new scientific study has highlighted that body fat is much more than a source of extra weight. Researchers say fat tissue functions as an essential organ that helps regulate metabolism, stores energy, and produces hormones needed for the body’s normal functioning. According to the researchers, while excessive body fat is widely associated with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, having too little body fat can also pose serious health risks. The findings suggest that maintaining a healthy balance of body fat is important for overall metabolic health. The study focused on a rare inherited disorder known as Familial Partial Lipodystrophy Type 2 (FPLD2). People with this condition lose fat from specific parts of the body or experience abnormal fat distribution, increasing their risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. A research team led by American endocrinologist Dr. Elif Oral examined patients with the condition and found that affected fat cells develop significant structural and functional abnormalities. These changes can disrupt the body’s metabolism and contribute to a range of health complications. To better understand the disease, scientists created a mouse model in which the Lamin A/C gene was switched off only in fat cells. This is the same gene known to be affected in individuals with FPLD2. The model allowed researchers to closely examine how defects in fat tissue influence the body’s metabolic processes. Researchers believe the findings could improve understanding of rare fat disorders while also opening new avenues for the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The study reinforces the idea that healthy fat tissue plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s balance and overall well-being.
