Norwegian foreign minister to visit Pakistan after…

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide will arrive in Pakistan on August 13 for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between Islamabad and Oslo.

The visit will continue through August 14 and will be Eide’s first trip to Pakistan by a Norwegian foreign minister in a decade.

Eide is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

During his stay, the Norwegian minister will hold delegation-level talks with Dar. The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of bilateral and international issues.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the two sides will examine opportunities to increase cooperation in trade and investment, climate change, renewable energy, education and people-to-people contacts.

Regional and global developments are also expected to feature prominently in the talks.

The visit comes as Pakistan and Norway have maintained diplomatic engagement through senior-level contacts in recent months.

Dar and Eide held telephone discussions in March and April, while Norwegian State Secretary Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik visited Islamabad in May.

Officials expect the latest visit to provide an opportunity to build on these contacts and identify new areas of cooperation that could benefit both countries.

Pakistan and Norway have maintained cordial relations for decades, with cooperation extending across economic, development and diplomatic fields.

    Cotton prices rise further across Pakistan

The committee was informed that the portion of the K IV Project under the responsibility of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is expected to be completed by 2027. The WAPDA Chairman told the committee that the funds required for this part of the project have already been secured, removing a major financial hurdle. However, questions remain over the overall progress of the project, as the committee decided to summon key Sindh officials in its next meeting to seek a clear update on the remaining work and coordination between different departments. The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water Resources, chaired by Mr. Ahmad Atteeq Anwer, MNA, directed that the Chief Secretary Government of Sindh, Secretary Irrigation Department Sindh, CEO Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and Project Director K IV must attend the next meeting to explain the current status of the project. The K IV project is considered an important scheme for improving water availability for Karachi, a city that has faced long standing challenges related to water supply. The committee stressed the need for better coordination among federal and provincial institutions to ensure timely completion. During the meeting, the committee also reviewed the WAPDA Security Force Bill, 2026. After detailed discussions, members directed that a comprehensive comparison study of the proposed legislation should be provided before the next meeting so that lawmakers can examine its provisions in detail. The committee members emphasised that major water projects require continuous monitoring and effective implementation to ensure public benefit. The committee will continue reviewing progress and seek updates from concerned departments in future meetings.

    Father seeks fresh post-mortem in Mir Raza case

    The father of deceased businessman Mir Raza Ali has decided to seek a second post-mortem examination, saying he is not satisfied with the initial medical report or the progress of the investigation into his son’s death. He insists that Mir Raza was murdered and claims attempts are being made to present the incident as a suicide. He alleged that his son’s body showed signs of violence, including burns to the face, body and fingerprints. He also claimed that Mir Raza was shot from behind and questioned why the initial medical report focused only on the gunshot injury without mentioning other visible injuries. Mir Hussain further questioned what happened to his son during the nearly 24 hours between his disappearance and the recovery of his body. He said Mir Raza had spoken to his sister before leaving home and appeared to be in a normal mood. According to the family, the taxi driver who dropped him off also told investigators that the businessman seemed cheerful and was singing during the journey. Preliminary medical findings indicated that the victim died from a gunshot wound. The report estimated that the body was between 24 and 36 hours old when examined. Medical officials also noted facial injuries and marks on one of his hands. The bullet’s path suggested it entered from the back and exited through the front. To ensure a thorough inquiry, Karachi police have constituted a three-member special investigation team. The team has been directed to examine every aspect of the case, identify those responsible and submit daily progress reports to senior police officials. Investigators have also reviewed the victim’s mobile phone records and forensic evidence. According to officials, the data indicates that Mir Raza had been facing financial difficulties. Authorities said he had reportedly sent a message to a friend shortly before his death requesting a loan of Rs30 million. Police have recorded statements from 15 individuals, including the taxi driver who last transported the victim and the person who first informed authorities about the body.
