Trump says Kim Jong Un responds to outreach

US President Donald Trump says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded to his recent efforts to reopen direct communication with Pyongyang.

Trump made the statement after announcing plans to reduce the scale of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.

A reporter asked Trump why Kim had not responded to his attempts to establish contact. Trump replied that the North Korean leader had responded, but he did not disclose what Kim had said or provide details about the communication.

The White House did not immediately provide further information. North Korea’s mission to the United Nations also did not issue an immediate response.

Trump has recently adopted a softer tone toward North Korea. He described the country as “unthreatening and respectful” and said Kim had always treated him with respect.

The US president said he understood Kim and believed the North Korean leader understood him as well.

Trump’s latest comments have revived speculation about a possible meeting between the two leaders. The pair held historic summits in 2018 and 2019 during Trump’s first presidency.

Those talks eventually collapsed over disagreements about North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme and the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.

North Korea has since expanded its military capabilities. It has also strengthened its ties with Russia while maintaining close relations with China.

The country has faced international sanctions over its nuclear programme and ballistic missile development.

North Korea has also provided military support to Russia during the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of using North Korean-made missiles in attacks on Ukrainian targets.

Trump’s administration has criticised Pyongyang’s military cooperation with Moscow. Despite this, Trump has continued to speak positively about his personal relationship with Kim.

The US president’s decision to reduce military exercises with South Korea has also attracted attention.

Trump said the exercises were expensive and argued that they sent an inappropriate and hostile message to North Korea.

Pyongyang has long condemned US-South Korean military drills. North Korea considers the exercises preparation for a possible attack.

The proposed reduction could therefore create additional space for diplomatic engagement.

However, analysts caution that a new summit may not happen immediately. Victor Cha of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said North Korea could take its time before responding more openly to Trump’s approach.

He also suggested that Trump may see renewed engagement with North Korea as a way to shift attention from other foreign policy challenges, while still genuinely wanting to meet Kim again.

Other analysts believe Kim could benefit from another meeting with the US president.

Andrew Yeo of the Brookings Institution said Kim had little to lose from holding talks with Trump. He argued that North Korea’s strengthened relationships with Russia and China could give Kim greater confidence in negotiations.

Yeo said another meeting could also enhance Kim’s international status and reputation.

Former US National Intelligence Officer Sydney Seiler noted that Trump had taken a similar approach during his first term. In 2018, the US president suspended major military exercises with South Korea as part of efforts to encourage dialogue with Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, North Korea has continued to strengthen its relationship with Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently reaffirmed Moscow’s close ties with Pyongyang. North Korean state media said Russia and North Korea were working together toward what they described as a new world order.

For now, Trump has provided no details about Kim’s reported response. The nature of the communication and whether it could lead to renewed high-level negotiations remain unclea

PPL strikes 1st-ever Chiltan formation gas find in…

KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant hydrocarbon discovery at its operated Sarani Block in Sindh’s Sujawal district, opening fresh prospects for exploration in the country’s shallow offshore and swampy onshore regions. The discovery was made at the Dolphin X-1 exploratory well, where PPL identified hydrocarbons in the Chiltan Formation of the Lower Indus Basin. The company described it as the first reported hydrocarbon discovery from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the basin. PPL said the find could expand exploration opportunities in adjoining shallow offshore areas and strengthen the hydrocarbon potential of Pakistan’s low-depth marine zones. The region had remained largely unexplored for years because of its challenging geological and geographical conditions. Drilling of Dolphin X-1 began on April 17, 2026, with the well reaching a measured depth of 3,850 metres to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Chiltan Formation. Analysis of drilling results and wireline logs subsequently identified a hydrocarbon-bearing zone. During testing, the well produced gas from the Chiltan Formation at a rate of 0.942 million standard cubic feet per day. The gas recorded a heating value of 1,000 British thermal units per standard cubic foot, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 211 pounds per square inch gauge through a 64/32-inch choke. PPL holds a 75 per cent working interest in the Sarani Block and serves as its operator, while Government Holdings (Private) Limited owns the remaining 25 per cent stake. The company said the well was drilled and tested using the expertise of its technical teams. The results have led to the identification of a new hydrocarbon play within the Chiltan Limestone, potentially providing a foundation for further exploration in the surrounding onshore and shallow offshore areas.

Hormuz uncertainty pushes global oil prices higher

KARACHI: Global oil prices edged higher on Monday as uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continued to unsettle energy markets. Brent crude climbed by more than 1% in Asian trading, moving above $84 a barrel, while US crude prices also posted gains of over 1%. The market remains focused on the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes. Any prolonged disruption or uncertainty over shipping through the waterway could put further pressure on global energy prices. Iran has indicated that discussions with Oman on establishing alternative shipping routes are nearing completion. However, Tehran says the United States still needs to fulfil additional conditions before arrangements concerning the waterway can move forward. With the situation still unresolved, traders are closely watching developments around the Strait, with concerns over supply disruptions continuing to influence crude prices.

Bank of Punjab Board approves Up to Rs30bn equity injection by Punjab government

LAHORE: The Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) has approved a proposal for an equity injection of up to Rs30 billion by the Government of Punjab, a move aimed at strengthening the bank’s capital position and supporting its next phase of expansion. The decision was taken at a board meeting held on August 7, 2026. Under the proposal, the Punjab government will subscribe to ordinary shares to be issued by the bank through a mechanism other than a rights issue. The proposed transaction will not take effect immediately and remains conditional on obtaining all required statutory, corporate, shareholder and regulatory approvals. According to the bank, the planned capital injection is an important step in its broader transformation strategy and will provide additional financial capacity to support sustainable growth across its key business segments. Share issuance price The ordinary shares will initially be issued at Rs38.20 per share. However, if the market price of BOP shares is higher than this amount at the time of issuance, the shares will be issued at the prevailing market price plus a premium of 5 percent. As a result, Rs38.20 will serve as the minimum or floor price for the proposed share issuance. The transaction is expected to reinforce the bank’s capital base and provide greater flexibility to manage balance-sheet expansion while maintaining prudent financial and risk-management standards. BOP expands its market presence The Bank of Punjab has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the institution expanding its balance sheet, improving financial performance and strengthening its position across several sectors of Pakistan’s economy. The bank has developed a strong presence in areas including small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financing, agricultural lending, affordable housing, digital banking and credit cards. It has also increased its focus on women’s participation and leadership in banking and financial services. BOP is further expanding its activities in commercial and corporate banking, particularly in areas linked to export-oriented businesses. The bank said these business segments have positioned it as an important participant in supporting economic activity, employment creation and financial inclusion across the country. Capital requirements rise with expansion Despite the bank’s growth, the rapid expansion of its operations has increased pressure on its existing capital base. BOP said its capital position has historically remained relatively limited compared with the size of its operations and the growth opportunities available to the institution. The proposed Rs30 billion injection is therefore expected to provide the bank with additional capacity to expand its core businesses while maintaining financial resilience. The additional capital could also enable BOP to increase its low-cost deposit base and grow lending operations without facing the same level of capital constraints. The bank said strengthening its capital position would allow it to pursue growth while maintaining a balanced and prudent approach to balance-sheet management. Strong financial performance The proposed capital injection comes as BOP continues to report strong underlying financial performance. During 2025, the bank recorded revenue growth of around 29 percent, while its earnings increased by more than 40 percent year on year. The bank also witnessed significant appreciation in the value of its shares during the period. According to the bank, the proposed capital raise should therefore be viewed primarily as growth capital rather than a measure aimed at addressing immediate financial weakness. The additional equity is expected to provide the financial foundation required for BOP to continue expanding its operations and investing in new business opportunities. International expansion in focus Another important component of the bank’s future strategy is its international expansion. The capital injection is expected to support the next phase of BOP’s growth, including an international venture that has recently received approval from the State Bank of Pakistan. The move could provide the bank with an opportunity to broaden its geographical footprint and develop new sources of business and revenue. With the proposed equity injection, BOP aims to strengthen its financial position, support expansion in priority sectors and improve its ability to serve businesses, consumers and other customers as demand for banking and financial services continues to grow.

Germany weighs tougher rules on sick leave

BERLIN: Germany is considering tougher rules for workers taking sick leave, but researchers warn that stricter requirements may not address the deeper reasons behind the country’s high absenteeism. German employees took an average of around 22 sick days in 2024. The figure is among the highest reported internationally. The government’s proposed changes are part of a wider effort to improve productivity. Germany is dealing with an ageing population and years of weak economic growth. Under the proposed changes, employers could require workers to provide a medical certificate from the first day of absence. Telephone-based sick notes could also be scrapped. However, researchers say the debate should focus on why workers are becoming ill rather than simply making it harder to take sick leave. Healthcare, education and social services are among the sectors reporting the highest levels of absenteeism. Workers in these fields often face heavy workloads. They also deal with staff shortages, emotional pressure and difficult working conditions. BKK data shows that women working in healthcare and social work took an average of 27 sick days in 2024. Teachers recorded around 24 days. The figures were lower in several other sectors. Workers in finance averaged about 18 days, while employees in communications recorded around 16 days. Researchers say mental health is an important part of the problem. Mental health-related cases represent a relatively small share of total sickness cases. However, they often result in much longer absences. Data from AOK shows that sick-leave days linked to mental health problems have increased by 47% since 2014. Mental health conditions are now one of the biggest causes of prolonged absence after respiratory illnesses. Experts say burnout and exhaustion can develop without reaching the level of a diagnosed mental disorder. Healthcare workers and teachers are particularly exposed to these pressures. They carry significant responsibilities while dealing with emotional and sometimes physical challenges. Teachers have reported violence and aggressive behaviour in schools. A 2024 survey found that almost half had experienced psychological or physical violence among pupils at their schools. More than one-third also reported feeling emotionally exhausted several times a week. Nursing faces similar difficulties. Germany has a shortage of healthcare workers, but studies indicate that wage growth has remained limited in some hospitals and public institutions. Researchers describe the situation as an imbalance between effort and reward. Workers face high demands but may receive relatively low pay, limited career opportunities and insufficient recognition. Studies have linked such conditions to mental health problems and long-term sickness absence. However, experts caution against blaming Germany’s absenteeism solely on workplace stress. Sick leave is affected by many factors. These include the age of the workforce, working conditions, social attitudes and differences in healthcare systems. Germany also has generous sick-pay provisions. Workers can generally receive full wages during the initial period of illness. Several other European countries, however, report even higher levels of sick leave among full-time employees. Researchers have also found little evidence of widespread abuse of sick-note rules. A study by DAK and the IGES Institute found that the sharp rise in recorded absences in 2022 was largely linked to improved electronic reporting and unusually high levels of respiratory infections and Covid-19. Sick-leave levels have since stabilised. Researchers also found no clear evidence that telephone sick notes introduced during the pandemic caused the increase. The government’s proposal has faced opposition from labour representatives. The Verdi services union has described the plan as creating a culture of distrust towards employees. Doctors have also warned that tougher certification requirements could put additional pressure on already busy medical practices. The government has defended its approach. It says employers would have the option of requiring certificates from the first day of illness while allowing companies to retain existing arrangements. The debate is therefore moving beyond the question of whether German workers take too many sick days. Researchers argue that reducing absenteeism in the long term may require better staffing, improved working conditions, stronger career prospects and greater support for workers facing emotional pressure.
