Nvidia to buy AI coding platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion

MANILA, Philippines – Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced on Thursday, September 3, that the company would be buying open-source AI coding platform Hugging Face for over $12.9 billion.

The announcement confirms earlier reports from The Information that Nvidia had bought out Hugging Face.

In Huang’s blog post to announce the acquisition, he said Hugging Face will remain an open platform for AI.

“Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face,” he explained.

Huang said he hopes Nvidia’s acquisition of Hugging Face will allow it to better scale to the currently 18-million-strong userbase of the platform.

“As the opportunity for open models accelerates, Hugging Face can serve the global AI community at unprecedented scale. NVIDIA’s infrastructure, engineering and global reach can help improve platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities, while preserving the open ecosystem that made Hugging Face foundational.” Huang added. – Rappler.com

By comparison, Lenovo held the largest share at about 31%, with its Tianxi AI assistant playing an important role in the company’s AI-focused strategy. Huawei followed with approximately 16% of the market, supported by an artificial intelligence strategy closely connected to its HarmonyOS ecosystem. Integrating Qwen directly into Apple’s built-in software could therefore help Apple make its Macs more competitive in an increasingly AI-driven Chinese market. For Alibaba, the partnership provides an opportunity to expand Qwen’s presence beyond its own applications and cloud services. The company has previously indicated that Qwen is expected to support Apple Intelligence across Apple’s major product categories in China, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro.     Meta removes 756,000 Australian teen accounts amid new age law

    Meta has deactivated 756,000 Australian accounts believed to belong to users under the age of 16. The company confirmed the move on Thursday amid tightening regulations on youth social media use. The total includes 462,000 suspected underage Instagram accounts and 294,000 flagged Facebook accounts. All were removed between December, when the ban first came into effect, and June of this year. To identify these accounts, Meta relied on AI tools designed to scan user activity for contextual clues suggesting an underage user. These included things like birthday celebration posts or references to specific school grades, alongside reports submitted by other users. In an official statement, Meta said enforcement remains ongoing and that these numbers will likely continue rising.
