Pakistan approves 1m tonnes wheat imports

Pakistan’s strategic wheat reserves have fallen to critically low levels, with the stocks held by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) reportedly almost exhausted.

The shortage has emerged despite the International Monetary Fund (IMF) allowing the government to procure wheat. Federal and provincial authorities, however, were unable to secure sufficient quantities, resulting in a sharp decline in PASSCO’s strategic reserves.

The situation has raised concerns about maintaining adequate wheat supplies and meeting future requirements. PASSCO plays an important role in maintaining strategic stocks that can be used to support food security during periods of shortage.

In response to the declining reserves, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the import of one million tonnes of wheat.

The government has also formed a steering committee to oversee the process and ensure that all necessary requirements are completed before the imported wheat is brought into the country.

Officials said the import process will be subject to several conditions. These include pre-shipment inspection to verify the quality and quantity of wheat before it leaves the exporting country.

Another major condition requires provincial governments to arrange and provide the funds needed to meet their respective wheat requirements.

The latest decision comes as authorities seek to strengthen wheat availability and prevent a potential supply gap. The import plan is expected to help rebuild stocks after the depletion of PASSCO’s strategic reserves.

The steering committee will monitor the required procedures and coordinate with the relevant federal and provincial authorities. Its role will include ensuring that the conditions attached to the wheat import decision are fulfilled.

The development highlights the importance of timely wheat procurement and strategic stock management. Any delay in rebuilding reserves could create additional pressure on the country’s food supply system, particularly if domestic availability remains insufficient.

Ukrainian drones strike Russian oil refineries deep inside enemy territory as energy attacks escalate

Ukraine has launched a series of long-range drone strikes targeting major oil processing facilities deep within Russian territory, hitting the Slavneft-Yanos refinery in Yaroslavl and the Bashneft-Novoil plant in Bashkortostan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strikes, stating that the operations targeted facilities located up to 1,300 kilometres from the Ukrainian border to disrupt fuel supplies and revenues used to fund Russia’s military campaign. Ukrainian forces also struck two Russian patrol boats and shadow fleet oil tankers in the Black Sea. Russian officials in Yaroslavl reported that emergency crews responded to multiple fires at the Slavneft-Yanos site after falling drone debris ignited fuel storage tanks, injuring four people. Russian air defence forces claimed to have intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones across several regions overnight. Simultaneously, Russian forces launched retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian energy and transport infrastructure. Heavy bombardment in the southern city of Kherson caused a complete blackout and severely disrupted internet connectivity, while additional Russian drone and missile strikes in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa killed at least 11 people and damaged residential areas, rail infrastructure, and cargo vessels.

Seven law enforcement personnel martyred during re…

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Information Secretary Muhammad Rashid Hanif has said that seven law enforcement personnel, including police and Rangers officials, were martyred during the recent unrest in the region. In a televised address on Monday, Hanif said the casualties occurred during clashes linked to ongoing protests by the now-proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The committee has been demonstrating in the region for several weeks over its demand to abolish 12 seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly reserved for refugees from Indian-held Kashmir. The unrest intensified after clashes between protesters and security personnel in Rawalakot and Mirpur last week. The incidents reportedly resulted in multiple casualties and increased tensions across the region. Hanif stated that weapons allegedly recovered from JAAC members were presented during a previous press conference by a police official on July 27. He claimed that seven law enforcement personnel were killed using similar weapons, while 45 personnel suffered serious injuries and several others sustained minor injuries. The AJK information secretary also alleged that police and Rangers vehicles were damaged and burned during the unrest. He claimed that the incidents indicated the presence of armed elements within the banned organization and accused them of attempting to challenge the state’s authority and disrupt peace. Responding to allegations made by JAAC regarding events in Rawalakot and surrounding areas between July 27 and July 31, Hanif rejected the claims and described them as part of a misinformation campaign. He said the security institutions of AJK had shown restraint and professionalism while handling the law and order situation. Hanif denied allegations of unprovoked firing by security forces and rejected claims that bodies were being withheld. He stated that the government currently had no bodies in its custody and accused the organization of spreading misleading information through social media. He further alleged that JAAC activists had been involved in blocking and damaging vehicles carrying essential supplies and food items. The information secretary also highlighted previous incidents involving casualties among law enforcement personnel, claiming that one police official was martyred in 2024 and three others in October 2025 during unrest-related incidents. Meanwhile, the AJK government criticized international media reports regarding the clashes, describing some coverage as biased and incomplete. Officials said reports should have included the government’s position and verified information before publication. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also criticized coverage of the AJK elections by some media outlets, alleging selective reporting from specific polling locations. The situation in AJK remains tense as authorities continue security measures while political and public disputes over electoral representation and governance issues continue. The government and protest groups have presented conflicting accounts of the events, and further developments are expected as investigations proceed.

Maryam approves 30,000-acre shrimp farming plan

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given in-principle approval for a major shrimp farming project covering 30,000 acres across the province. The plan includes areas such as Bahawalpur and aims to turn unused and barren land into productive aquaculture zones. The decision was taken during a meeting on shrimp farming and fisheries development in Punjab. Officials briefed the chief minister about progress on the project and the potential for expanding shrimp production in different parts of the province. Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to speed up work on introducing modern, technology-based shrimp farming in Sargodha. The decision follows successful experimental farming activities in Muzaffargarh. The chief minister said Punjab had significant potential to develop a large shrimp farming industry. She said barren land could be transformed into productive farms and eventually become a major centre for shrimp exports. She said the development of a complete local value chain would help Punjab emerge as a leading shrimp-exporting region. The value chain would cover farming, processing, packaging, transportation and marketing. According to the chief minister, the project could also help save valuable foreign exchange. Local food businesses currently rely on imported shrimp to meet part of their demand. Increasing domestic production could reduce the need for imports and keep more foreign exchange within the country. Maryam Nawaz directed officials to gradually involve the private sector in the shrimp farming programme. She said private investment and modern technology could help expand production and improve the efficiency of the sector. The project is also expected to create new employment opportunities in farming, processing, transportation and related businesses. Officials will work on developing the necessary infrastructure and facilities as the programme expands. The chief minister stressed the need for a modern and commercially viable fisheries sector in Punjab. She directed the relevant departments to ensure that the project moves forward according to a clear and practical plan. During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz was also given a detailed briefing on the Kahna Fish Market. Officials discussed the market’s development and related fisheries activities.
