Pakistani climbers open historic new route on broa…

Pakistani mountaineers have achieved a landmark feat by opening a brand-new climbing route on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. The accomplishment is being hailed as a major milestone for Pakistan’s mountaineering community, showcasing the country’s growing expertise in high-altitude climbing and technical expedition planning.

Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 metres (26,414 feet), is located in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit-Baltistan, approximately five miles from K2. Ranked as the world’s 12th-highest mountain, Broad Peak has long attracted climbers from around the globe because of its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.

The newly established route, officially named the Mirza Ali Legacy Route, begins above Camp 3 and offers a fresh approach to the summit. The route was created after an intensive three-day effort that required climbers to navigate deep snow, steep rock faces, and mixed sections of snow and rock under extremely demanding conditions.

The expedition was led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Mirza Ali, founder of Karakorum Expeditions. Along with his team, he spent days fixing ropes and securing the mountain to make the route accessible for future expeditions. Their summit push began at 2:00 a.m. local time on July 19. Battling continuous snowfall, freezing temperatures, and severe weather, the climbers finally reached the summit at 9:55 p.m. after more than 24 hours of nonstop climbing.

To establish the route, the team installed over 1,600 metres of fixed rope and placed permanent rock pitons at critical points to improve safety and stability. According to expedition organisers, the new line is shorter, more direct, and significantly safer than the traditional path, which passes through Broad Peak’s hazardous “V Section.” The redesigned route is expected to reduce climbers’ exposure to avalanches and falling rocks, two of the mountain’s most serious risks.

Organisers estimate that under normal weather conditions, climbers using the new route should be able to reach the summit from Camp 3 within seven to eight hours and descend in approximately two to three hours, making the ascent both faster and more efficient.

The route was unanimously named in honour of Mirza Ali to recognise his 16 years of dedication to Pakistan’s mountaineering sector. Throughout his career, he has trained aspiring climbers, organised national and international expeditions, and promoted Pakistan as a premier destination for adventure tourism.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mirza Ali said the successful opening of the route demonstrates the technical capability, determination, and resilience of Pakistani climbers. He also stressed the importance of investing in mountaineering education, safety training, and adventure tourism, highlighting Gilgit-Baltistan’s enormous untapped potential within the mountain economy.

International members of the expedition also praised the accomplishment. Argentine climber Juan Toro described the project as a historic milestone for Pakistani mountaineering, while Hungarian climber David Klein called the newly opened path an innovative and technically brilliant route that reflected the team’s exceptional skill and perseverance.

The summit team included Mirza Ali, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, Nawaz Ali Khan, Zaman Karim, Juan Toro, and David Klein. To support future expeditions and improve emergency response, the team also recorded all major anchor locations using Garmin inReach GPS technology, ensuring the new route can be safely managed for climbers in the years ahead.

Eight killed as house roof collapses in Lahore

LAHORE: At least eight people lost their lives after the roof of a house collapsed in Lahore’s Harbanspura area late Wednesday night, prompting a major rescue operation by emergency teams. Rescue 1122 personnel, assisted by the district administration, rushed to the scene and began clearing the debris in search of people trapped beneath the rubble. Lahore Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz visited the site and supervised the ongoing rescue efforts. Heavy machinery was deployed to speed up the operation and ensure the safe recovery of survivors. Officials said rescue workers continued searching through the debris as fears remained that more people could still be trapped. The deputy commissioner directed all relevant departments to use every available resource to complete the rescue operation as quickly as possible. He also ordered an inquiry to determine the cause of the roof collapse. The latest tragedy comes weeks after another roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore claimed the lives of 14 children. Authorities had registered a case against the building owners and contractor after investigators found that excessive weight placed on the damaged roof had caused it to cave in. Earlier this year, four children were also killed and around 20 others injured when the roof of a classroom at a private school in Dera Ghazi Khan collapsed during construction work. An official investigation concluded that construction material placed on the roof had exceeded its load-bearing capacity, leading to the collapse.

Lionel Messi returns to Inter Miami training after World Cup

MIAMI: Football icon Lionel Messi has returned to training with Inter Miami CF after taking a short break following Argentina’s heartbreaking defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The Argentine captain was back on the training pitch on Wednesday, just 10 days after Spain edged Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final in New Jersey, ending the South American nation’s hopes of defending the title they won in Qatar four years earlier. Inter Miami shared a video on its official social media platforms showing Messi arriving for training alongside longtime teammate and close friend Luis Suárez. The footage quickly attracted millions of views as fans celebrated the return of one of football’s greatest-ever players. Following the World Cup final, Messi returned to his hometown of Rosario in Argentina, where he spent time with his family while recovering physically and emotionally from the tournament. A day after the final, the 39-year-old expressed his disappointment in an emotional social media message, admitting that the defeat had left a deep emotional scar. “The pain is immense, and it’s going to take a long time for this wound to heal,” Messi wrote after Argentina narrowly missed out on consecutive World Cup titles. The football legend has not yet confirmed whether he will continue representing Argentina at international level, leaving supporters eagerly waiting for a decision about his future with the national team. During Messi’s absence, Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos explained that neither Messi nor Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul had a fixed return date, stressing the physical and mental demands of a World Cup campaign. “They need the time,” Hoyos had said, adding that players deserved adequate rest after competing on football’s biggest stage. Major League Soccer also granted Messi and De Paul permission to miss this year’s MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte due to their recent World Cup commitments. The decision marked a departure from last season, when Messi received a one-match suspension after missing the showcase event without an approved exemption. Although Messi has resumed full training, Inter Miami has not officially confirmed when he will return to competitive action. The club is scheduled to host the Columbus Crew on Saturday before beginning its Leagues Cup campaign next week against Mexico’s Atlético de San Luis. With Messi back on the training ground, excitement has surged among Inter Miami supporters, who hope the Argentine superstar will quickly return to action and lead the club’s push for silverware during the remainder of the 2026 season.

Shaheen Afridi pulls out of LPL 2026

COLOMBO: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has reportedly withdrawn from the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, bringing an early end to a turbulent campaign that was overshadowed by an administrative mix-up and below-par performances. According to media reports, the 26-year-old informed his franchise, Kandy Royals, that he was leaving the tournament for personal reasons. Neither Afridi nor the franchise has disclosed further details, while Kandy Royals are yet to announce a replacement. Afridi’s departure comes just days after he was at the centre of an unusual selection controversy. Reports claimed he had initially been listed as the team’s Impact Player for a match against Colombo Capitals, but was unable to feature after an administrative error left his name off the official team sheet. The mistake reportedly occurred after Kandy Royals elected to bat first, with team officials later informing Afridi that an analyst had accidentally omitted his name from the final squad submitted before the match. The incident prompted the Pakistan pacer to raise the issue with an official from the tournament’s Anti-Corruption Unit, after which the matter was referred to the match referee for review. Franchise officials and tournament organisers later apologised to Afridi for the error. Reports suggested the left-arm fast bowler had briefly considered leaving the competition immediately after the incident but decided to stay with the squad following the apology. Despite remaining in the tournament, Afridi struggled to make his usual impact with the ball. He claimed seven wickets in six matches, averaging 32.00, while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.18, figures well below the standards expected from one of Pakistan’s premier fast bowlers. Meanwhile, the LPL continues to see changes in team combinations, with two more Pakistani cricketers joining the competition as replacement signings. Young batter Khawaja Nafay has been drafted by Jaffna Kings to replace Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran, while experienced all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has signed with Dambulla Sixers as a replacement for Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Shaheen’s reported withdrawal marks another twist in an eventful LPL campaign and is likely to spark further discussion about player management and tournament administration as the competition heads toward its decisive stages.

Ben Affleck spends 54th birthday with Garner amid JLo buzz

Ben Affleck marked his 54th birthday on Saturday, August 15, with a quiet family celebration. His former wife, Jennifer Garner, was among those who joined in marking the occasion. The two share three children together, Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14. According to a Daily Mail report, Affleck kept this year’s celebrations especially low-key, given that it marks his first birthday since losing his mother, Chris Anne. The family gathering took place in Santa Monica, where Garner and the children joined Affleck for an intimate celebration. For the outing, Affleck wore a white button-down shirt paired with blue jeans and matching sneakers. He was seen heading to a favourite local eatery over the weekend, accompanied by his two sons, Fin and Samuel. Garner arrived separately for the celebration, dressed in green fitted gym trousers, a black hoodie and a blue baseball cap. Despite both attending the same birthday outing, Affleck and Garner weren’t spotted together during the celebration itself. The appearance also holds added significance given recent speculation about Affleck’s personal life. This marks the former couple’s first public outing together since rumours began swirling about a possible reunion between Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Affleck and Garner divorced in 2015 after ten years of marriage. Meanwhile, Affleck finalised his separation from Lopez in 2025, following roughly two years of marriage. Reports earlier this month suggested the two had been spending quality time together, including during a secretive getaway in Italy. An insider claimed Lopez feels genuinely thrilled to have reconnected emotionally with Affleck, despite their difficult split back in February last year. The source described Affleck as comfortable continuing to offer Lopez guidance and emotional support whenever she needs it. Neither Lopez nor Affleck has directly addressed the growing reunion speculation so far. For now, both the birthday outing with Garner and the reunion buzz with Lopez continue to draw significant attention from fans and entertainment outlets alike. With his personal life generating steady headlines in recent weeks, Affleck’s understated birthday celebration offered a rare, low-profile moment amid the ongoing speculation surrounding his relationships.
