Thai Police Arrest 2 Vietnamese Men Over 2.5 Million Baht in Phone Scam

BANGKOK – Thai police have recently arrested two Vietnamese nationals who were attempting to cross the border into Laos. These men are accused of operating within a large, transnational scam network. Investigators say this ruthless gang tricked a young university student out of her life savings.

The devastated victim lost nearly 2.5 million Thai baht to this highly elaborate phone scheme. Cunning scammers successfully convinced the student that she was involved in serious illegal activities. They used extreme fear and deep isolation to steal her money in just a few days.

Key Takeaways

  • Police arrested two Vietnamese suspects at a major border checkpoint in Nakhon Phanom province.
  • The men allegedly opened illegal bank accounts to hide money for a transnational crime syndicate.
  • A university student was tricked into transferring nearly 2.5 million baht after fake police threatened her.

The nightmare started back in March with a seemingly simple and routine phone call. A person claiming to work for a major mobile network unexpectedly contacted the young student. They falsely told her that someone had used her identity to open a new phone number.

The caller claimed this new mobile number was currently linked to major criminal operations. The scared student was then quickly transferred to another person on the phone line. This second individual confidently pretended to be a real police officer from Chonburi province.

The fake police officer used aggressive threats to severely frighten the young university student. He told her she would face harsh criminal charges if she did not cooperate immediately. Pure fear quickly took over, making her highly vulnerable to their next cruel demands.

Isolation and Stolen Funds

The scam gang ruthlessly forced the student to lock herself inside her dormitory room. They ordered her to strictly cut off all outside contact with her friends and family. Furthermore, the scammers made her keep a live video call running on her phone constantly.

This continuous video call ensured she could not quietly ask anyone else for help. Operating under immense pressure, the scammers offered her a fake way out of her supposed legal trouble. They told her to transfer all her personal money to officially prove her innocence.

Believing she was successfully clearing her name, she completely emptied both of her bank accounts. She sent a massive total of 2,495,636 baht into five different accounts controlled by the gang. By the time she finally realized it was a trick, her money was already gone.

The student eventually reported the terrible crime to Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau. Cyber police worked closely with local immigration officers to carefully track down the suspects. They quickly identified the two men who had opened the gang’s illegal bank accounts.

Facing Justice in Thailand

Authorities caught the fleeing men at the Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge located in Nakhon Phanom. The suspects, identified as Nguyen Van Ngoc and Nguyen Van Tu, were trying to escape justice. They were actively attempting to cross into neighboring Laos when observant officers finally stopped them.

Both men now face a very long list of highly serious criminal charges. These include actively participating in a transnational crime group and committing massive public fraud. They are also formally charged with organized money laundering and using fake government documents.

This heartbreaking case highlights the rapidly growing danger of organized cybercrime across Southeast Asia. Organized scam networks often use fake identities to prey on young, unsuspecting, and innocent victims. According to a detailed report by Thairath News, local police are actively stepping up their prevention efforts.

Authorities strongly urge the general public to remain alert and never transfer money to strangers. Real police officers will never call to ask you to empty your bank accounts. If you receive a highly suspicious call, simply hang up and contact your local police immediately.

U.S. formally demands transfer of Apollo Quiboloy

The United States government has submitted a request to the Philippines, seeking the immediate transfer of Apollo Quiboloy to face criminal charges in California. The move sets off a complex jurisdictional tug-of-war between Washington and Manila, as the disgraced religious leader is currently held in a Philippine detention center while on trial for local criminal offenses. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that it received the official extradition papers from the U.S. State Department and transmitted the diplomatic request to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The diplomatic petition represents the sharpest escalation yet in the multi-year international pursuit of the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church. Severe Allegations and Federal Indictment Quiboloy, who claims millions of devout followers in the Philippines and abroad, was placed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Most Wanted list following a November 2021 federal indictment in the Central District of California. The detailed federal charge sheet accuses Quiboloy and several high-ranking associates of operating a widespread, coercive sex-trafficking ring across the United States and the Philippines. According to federal investigators, young women and underage girls between the ages of 12 and 25 were fraudulently brought into the United States under false promises of educational or religious opportunities. Once in the country, victims were allegedly coerced into soliciting donations to support the lavish lifestyles of KOJC leadership, subjected to physical abuse, and forced to perform sexual favors for Quiboloy, referred to within the organization as night duty. Federal prosecutors further allege that victims were manipulated with warnings of eternal damnation if they failed to comply or disclosed the abuse to authorities. In addition to sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion, Quiboloy faces U.S. federal charges. Arranging sham marriages between foreign followers and U.S. citizens to secure long-term immigration visas. Unlawfully transferring millions of dollars in illicitly solicited donations out of the United States. Falsifying immigration documentation to transport workers across international borders. Legal Hurdles and Pending Philippine Trials Despite the urgency expressed by Washington, Quiboloy’s extradition is far from immediate. The 76-year-old preacher was apprehended by Philippine law enforcement in September 2024 following a massive multi-week police operation at the KOJC’s 30-hectare compound in Davao City. He has since been held in a Manila detention facility facing non-bailable qualified human trafficking and child sexual abuse charges under Philippine law. Under the bilateral Extradition Treaty between the United States and the Philippines, the presence of active criminal proceedings in the host country creates a significant legal bottleneck. Philippine courts must evaluate whether local prosecution takes precedence or whether a temporary surrender mechanism can be arranged. Quiboloy’s defense team quickly signalled its intent to vigorously fight the extradition request in court. Defense attorneys argue that local judicial proceedings must be fully resolved before any foreign transfer can be considered, pointing out that two distinct Philippine regional trial courts currently hold jurisdiction over his pending criminal cases. Political Fallout and International Impact The extradition request carries substantial political and diplomatic weight in Manila. Quiboloy long enjoyed significant political influence as a close friend and spiritual advisor to former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Despite his incarceration, Quiboloy demonstrated his enduring public profile by mounting a campaign for the Philippine Senate in the 2025 midterm elections, where he garnered over 5.6 million votes.   Human rights advocates and lawmakers, including Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros welcomed the U.S. extradition request as a long-overdue step toward justice for victims worldwide. Philippine Justice Ministry officials noted that while court approval is legally required before any handover can occur, Manila remains committed to reviewing the request strictly in accordance with international treaties and due process.
