Ranjhan Yaar: Reclaiming Waris Shah’s Philosophy of Power and Resistance

By Tallat Naveed

Ranjhan Yaar is an original Punjabi play by the eminent philosopher, historian, literary critic, poet, translator, and scholar Dr. Manzur Ejaz, whose profound understanding of Waris Shah’s Heer has earned him recognition as one of the most insightful interpreters of Punjab’s literary heritage.

The play was written at the request of the Global Arts drama group, whose objective was not to stage another dramatic adaptation of a familiar folk romance. Instead, they envisioned a theatrical work that would unveil the philosophical and anthropological essence of Waris Shah’s Heer. Accepting this challenge, Dr. Manzur Ejaz produced a play that moves beyond the conventional narrative of romantic love to explore the deeper realities of power, social hierarchy, human dignity, and the contradictions of the feudal order.

Rooted in the author’s extensive study of Waris Shah, ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ offers an original and intellectually engaging interpretation of one of Punjab’s greatest literary masterpieces. The play was later performed in Washington, D.C., where it received widespread appreciation for its literary depth, philosophical insight, and compelling dramatic structure. Rather than merely retelling a timeless legend, ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ invites its audience to rediscover Waris Shah’s vision as a profound reflection on society, justice, and the enduring struggle between power and humanity oppressed. Rather than celebrating romance alone, the play unveils the enduring conflict between the feudal ruling class and the dispossessed, revealing how social and economic power shapes human relationships and destinies.

Dr. Manzur Ejaz displays remarkable dramatic artistry in ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ by transforming a familiar folk narrative into a philosophical and socially conscious play. The plot is tightly structured, with each scene advancing both the dramatic action and the central ideological conflict. His characters transcend individual identities to embody opposing social forces, lending the play symbolic depth. The dialogue is concise, intellectually engaging, and dramatically effective, revealing character while exposing the contradictions of the feudal order. In its fusion of social criticism and philosophical discourse, the play recalls the dramatic technique of George Bernard Shaw, whose theatre employs dialogue as a medium for intellectual debate. Through its structural coherence and thematic depth, ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ firmly establishes Dr. Manzur Ejaz as a playwright of remarkable literary vision

He subverts the conventional hierarchy of folk drama by assigning intellectual and moral authority to the marginalised rather than the feudal elite. Characters such as Rangu, Elmu, and Jammu emerge as the true custodians of wisdom, while Heer’s companions Noori and her maid Rano collectively reinforce the play’s philosophy of resistance against class oppression and feudal hegemony. Heer is transformed into a symbol of resilience and moral defiance, and Ranjha into an embodiment of unwavering devotion and human dignity. Consequently, ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ transcends the limits of a romantic folk tale, evolving into a powerful dramatic critique of class hierarchy, caste prejudice, religious exploitation and the moral bankruptcy of the feudal order. The friendship between Dhedhu (Ranjha) and Rangu dissolves the artificial boundaries of class, affirming that humanity is measured not by birth but by conscience. Even more striking is the contrast between Malki, the wife of the feudal lord Chuchak, and Rano, Heer’s humble maid. Bound by the chains of privilege, she lacks the courage to defend her own daughter, while Rano, though socially insignificant, rises as the moral conscience of the play by standing fearlessly beside Heer. In this profound inversion of power, Dr. Manzur Ejaz revives Waris Shah’s enduring philosophy: society is governed by socio-economic injustice, where class interests eclipse blood relations, justice, and ethical values. This vision closely echoes the Marxist critique of feudal hegemony. Consequently, Heer and Ranjha cease to be merely legendary lovers; they become symbols of equality, human dignity, and resistance, whose tragic end exposes a social order that annihilates every voice raised against oppression.

As Rangu reminds us in the closing movement of the play,

ایهه سماج چود ہریاں مھراں دا سماج ، ھیراں رانجھیاں نوں اپنے اندر سمو نہیں سکدا جے کر اندر سمون دا جتن کرے آپ پاٹ جاۓ.

A society founded upon privilege, caste, and feudal power can never become a sanctuary for truth, love, or justice. Its very structure demands the destruction of those who dare to challenge its authority. Heer and Ranjha are therefore not defeated because they loved; they are sacrificed because they embody equality, integrity, and the freedom of the human spirit. Yet, while the feudal order succeeds in silencing their bodies, it fails to extinguish their ideals. The moral courage of Rangu, Elmu, Jammu, Noori, Dena, and Rano survives as an enduring voice of conscience against oppression.

In this lies the enduring greatness of ‘Ranjhan Yaar.’ Dr. Sahib restores Waris Shah’s Heer to its true philosophical stature—not as a romantic legend, but as a profound documentation of power, class hierarchy, and human resistance. The play reminds us that oppressive systems may eliminate individuals, but they can never annihilate the truth they represent. That is why Heer and Ranjha continue to live—not as lovers imprisoned in folklore, but as timeless.

More than a reinterpretation of Waris Shah’s Heer, ‘Ranjhan Yaar’ holds a mirror to the society we continue to inhabit. Its critique of class privilege, feudal authority, religious exploitation, and socio-economic injustice remains profoundly relevant. It is an essential read for anyone who seeks to understand that Heer is not merely a love story, but a timeless philosophy of power, resistance, and human dignity.

A compelling and indispensable read for every serious student of Punjabi literature.

Mustafa Zahid may return for ‘Awarapan 2’ remake track

Nearly two decades after Tera Mera Rishta became one of the biggest hits from Awarapan, original singer Mustafa Zahid may be returning for the sequel. The Pakistani vocalist appears set to reunite with the franchise’s makers. According to a Mid-day report, the 41-year-old is reportedly in talks with producers Mukesh Bhatt and Vishesh Bhatt. The discussions center around a remake for Awarapan 2. The development is notable given Bollywood’s long-standing stance on Pakistani artistes since the 2016 Uri attack. That boycott was reaffirmed more recently, following the 2025 Pahalgam attack. Despite that backdrop, talks are reportedly moving forward. If the deal goes through, the song would reportedly be recorded in Dubai rather than India. A source close to the matter told the publication that this could mark one of the rare recent instances of a Pakistani playback singer working on a mainstream Hindi film. However, the track itself will not feature in Awarapan 2 directly, as its inclusion could create certification complications for the film. To work around that, the makers are said to be considering releasing the song exclusively through social media promotions, bypassing theatrical use entirely. Meanwhile, the film’s own trailer dropped on August 6, marking the franchise’s return after 19 years. Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam Pandit, now portrayed as older and more emotionally scarred. Disha Patani joins the cast as Zara, while Shabana Azmi takes on the role of antagonist Nafisa. The soundtrack brings together composers Mithoon, Jeet Gannguli and Amaal Malik, among others, with tracks like Ve Junoon and Yeh Awarapan already released. The trailer also includes a recreated version of Tera Mera Rishta, now sung by Saaj Bhatt and Subodhh Sharma. Original lyricist Sayeed Qadri has returned to pen the updated version of the track. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 is set for a worldwide release on August 14. The film will clash at the box office with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, setting up a high-profile release-date showdown.

Shawn Mendes stars in Gucci’s new Primavera campaign

Shawn Mendes has stepped into a new fashion chapter as one of the faces of Gucci’s latest campaign, “Primavera,” unveiled by the Italian luxury house on August 25. The campaign introduces the collection created for Gucci by creative director Demna and brings together an eclectic group of personalities from music, sport, film and fashion. Photographed by Michal Chelbin, the campaign features Mendes alongside Tom Brady, BTS member Jin, aespa’s NINGNING, Xiao Zhan, Alex Consani, Rico Nasty, EsDeeKid, Lee Young Ae and Tarzzan. Rather than presenting the stars in a conventional fashion-shoot setting, Chelbin’s portraits draw inspiration from the composition and grandeur of classical Renaissance paintings, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary atmosphere. For Mendes, the campaign marks another prominent appearance with Gucci. The singer is photographed in a fitted black top and leather glove, showcasing a more striking and fashion-forward side of his image. His appearance arrives as Gucci continues to establish the visual identity of Demna’s first collection for the house. The Primavera collection introduces a new vocabulary of silhouettes, textures and materials, combining Gucci’s established heritage with Demna’s contemporary approach. For menswear, the collection includes body-conscious silhouettes, fluid fabrics, statement outerwear and leather pieces, alongside recognizable Gucci details and accessories. The campaign’s concept extends beyond clothing. “Primavera,” meaning spring, is presented by Gucci as a symbol of rebirth and renewal, with love and human connection at the heart of the campaign. Alongside the portraits, director Johan Renck has created a short film starring Kate Moss. Set to Chris Isaak’s baritone rendition of “Wicked Game,” the film follows a group of strangers as they awaken, encounter one another and eventually fall in love on a dance floor. The combination of established stars and emerging cultural figures reflects Gucci’s attempt to present a broad vision of its new era. Mendes’ inclusion places the singer within a cast spanning several generations and creative industries, further strengthening his growing presence in the fashion world. With its intimate photography, Renaissance-inspired imagery and diverse cast, Gucci’s Primavera campaign presents Demna’s debut collection through a story of individuality, attraction and renewal while giving Shawn Mendes another opportunity to explore a bolder side of his style. https://www.instagram.com/p/DcdKcZPgkFX/?igsi=a2lqdXg2ZXR4OTJl

Laila Zuberi shares advice on handling marital disagreements

Senior Pakistani actress Laila Zuberi has shared thoughtful advice on how married couples can handle disagreements, anger, and tense situations in a relationship. During a conversation with host Nida Yasir, the veteran actress discussed the importance of remaining calm when emotions run high between husband and wife. She advised women that when their husbands are angry, it may be better to avoid immediately arguing or responding in anger. According to her, reacting in the heat of the moment can sometimes make a disagreement worse rather than helping resolve it. Laila explained that when either a husband or wife becomes angry, the other person should give them some time and space to calm down. Once emotions have settled, the couple can discuss the actual reason behind the disagreement and try to find a solution through a calm conversation. The actress also shared a personal rule that she and her husband established at the beginning of their marriage. She revealed that they decided they would never go to sleep while being angry or upset with each other. According to Laila, the couple makes an effort to resolve their differences before going to bed. This includes talking through their problems, apologising when necessary, and making an effort to understand each other. She believes that addressing disagreements instead of allowing resentment to continue can help maintain a healthier relationship. However, Laila Zuberi’s comments sparked a discussion among social media users, particularly regarding her suggestion that women should remain silent when their husbands are angry. Several users questioned why the advice appeared to be directed mainly at women. They argued that maintaining peace during an argument should be a shared responsibility between both partners rather than something expected from only one person. Some social media users pointed out that if a wife is expected to remain quiet when her husband is angry, the same principle should apply when the wife is the one who loses her temper. In their view, both partners should give each other time to cool down before continuing a difficult conversation. One user offered a humorous take on the situation, suggesting that couples should simply follow a “turn-by-turn” rule. Whenever one partner becomes angry, the other should remain silent until the situation becomes calmer. Despite the debate surrounding her comments, the central message from Laila focused on communication, patience, and resolving disagreements rather than allowing anger to damage a relationship. Laila Zuberi is regarded as one of Pakistan’s veteran television actresses. Her career is linked to the early days of Pakistan Television, and she initially worked as a radio artist before moving into television during the 1980s. She gained recognition through memorable performances in several popular television productions, including Guest House. Over the years, she has appeared in numerous acclaimed dramas and established herself as a respected figure in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.

Chiranjeevi unveils Kaaka title on 71st birthday

Indian megastar Chiranjeevi celebrated his 71st birthday with the title reveal of his upcoming film Kaaka, which was previously being referred to as #Mega158. The makers released the first glimpse of the film on Saturday, offering fans an intriguing introduction to Chiranjeevi’s character and revealing that the veteran actor will appear in two distinctly different avatars. Directed by Bobby Kolli, Kaaka is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on January 13, 2027, coinciding with the Sankranthi festival. The title announcement was shared by KVN Productions, which teased fans with a glimpse of what it described as a new side of the megastar. The production house also promised an intense big-screen experience with the upcoming project. The glimpse begins with Chiranjeevi playing K Satyam, a middle-class supervisor working in the aqua industry. The character initially appears simple, responsible and grounded. Satyam is shown dealing with his team in Chennai and ensuring that an important delivery is completed on time. He also refuses a colleague’s request for leave because of a festival-related deadline. The sequence then takes an unexpected and humorous turn. When a colleague accidentally drops scooter keys into the water, a dog appears carrying a remote. Satyam uses the remote and a magnet in an attempt to retrieve the keys. However, the seemingly ordinary situation quickly changes when guns emerge from the water along with the missing keys. The surprising moment leads into the film’s title reveal and hints that Satyam may have a much more complicated background than initially suggested. The glimpse then shifts to another version of Chiranjeevi. In the flashback-style sequence, the actor appears younger and considerably more stylish. He is seen handling firearms with confidence, presenting a sharp contrast to the modest and unassuming Satyam introduced earlier. The teaser deliberately leaves the relationship between the two versions of Chiranjeevi unexplained. It also keeps the larger storyline under wraps, leaving viewers to speculate about the connection between the characters and the circumstances that bring their worlds together. The film features Anaswara Rajan alongside Chiranjeevi. The writing team includes Kona Venkat, K Chakravarthy Reddy, Hari Mohana Krishna and Vineeth Potluri. With its combination of humour, mystery and action, Kaaka is already generating interest among Chiranjeevi’s fans. The contrasting looks presented in the title glimpse have particularly raised curiosity about the actor’s role and the film’s narrative. Chiranjeevi has another major project lined up as well. His film Vishwambhara is scheduled for release on October 16, adding to an already busy period for the veteran star.

According to the latest streaming figures, Dae Dae recorded the highest single-day streaming total of its career following the performance. On July 20, the song received approximately 2.2 million official on-demand streams in the United States, setting a new personal record for the collaboration. The impressive total represented a 65 percent increase compared to the day before the World Cup final. It also reflected an 84 percent rise over the day following the tournament’s opening ceremony, highlighting the enormous impact of the halftime performance on the song’s popularity. Music industry experts have long observed that performances during globally watched sporting events often lead to significant increases in streaming, digital downloads, and chart rankings. With hundreds of millions of football fans tuning in to watch the World Cup final, the halftime show provided an ideal platform for artists to introduce their music to new audiences while reconnecting with existing fans. The success of Dae Dae extended beyond streaming platforms. The track also climbed into the Top 20 of Spotify and Apple Music’s real-time charts, further demonstrating its growing international appeal. The song quickly became one of the most talked-about musical moments of the tournament, with fans continuing to stream it in the days following the final. The World Cup halftime show also benefited several other artists. Justin Bieber’s Everything Hallelujah experienced a remarkable boost, with official U.S. streams increasing by 161 percent to around 268,000. Meanwhile, global K-pop sensation BTS saw renewed interest in its hit song Dynamite, which recorded a 74 percent increase in streaming, reaching approximately 312,000 official plays in the United States.
