Today, as Pakistan’s diplomatic and strategic importance continues to grow, that vision appears increasingly visible on the international stage. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are working together to translate that vision into reality. Their close coordination has provided Pakistan with a sense of direction, unity and confidence at a time when the world itself is undergoing profound geopolitical change. Pakistan’s relationship with China remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy, while ties with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia continue to deepen. At the same time, engagement with the United States has entered a phase in which Washington is once again recognising Pakistan’s strategic importance. The positive remarks by US President Donald Trump about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir have also attracted international attention. Perhaps most importantly, Pakistan is projecting itself with greater confidence. The scenes in Islamabad surrounding the inauguration of Yadgar-e-Fateh, commemorating the sacrifices and achievements associated with Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, captured this changing mood. Political and military leaders standing together alongside the families of martyrs and veterans conveyed a powerful message that Pakistan’s strength lies in unity. As an overseas Pakistani who has lived in the West for more than two decades, this transformation is particularly striking. I have witnessed different phases of Pakistan’s image abroad. There were years when Pakistan was frequently discussed through the prism of instability, terrorism and political uncertainty. Today, the conversation is different. Pakistan is increasingly being discussed in terms of its strategic importance, diplomatic role, defence capabilities, regional influence and economic potential. This should make every Pakistani proud—but it should also make us more responsible. International recognition alone cannot build a prosperous Pakistan. The next challenge is to convert diplomatic and strategic gains into economic prosperity, stronger institutions, better education, employment opportunities and an improved quality of life for ordinary Pakistanis. That is where Jinnah’s vision must ultimately lead. At 79, Pakistan has every reason to celebrate. The country is standing taller on the world stage, and the partnership between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir has helped project a message of unity and national purpose.     PM orders expansion of strategic oil reserves

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expand Pakistan’s strategic petroleum reserves while approving key amendments to the Pakistan Oil Refining Policy 2023, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security, attracting investment and modernising the refining sector. Chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE), the prime minister was briefed on the progress of refinery upgradation projects, ongoing energy sector reforms and the implementation of the revised refining policy. He described the modernisation of Pakistan’s oil refineries as a national priority, saying it would improve energy security, reduce reliance on imported fuels and support the production of cleaner, environmentally friendly petroleum products. The approved amendments focus on upgrading existing refineries to increase production capacity while enabling the manufacture of Euro-V standard petrol and diesel. The changes are also intended to reduce the production of furnace oil and other lower-quality petroleum products, helping Pakistan meet international environmental commitments and curb air pollution. To encourage foreign investment, Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed officials to organise investment roadshows in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries to promote opportunities in Pakistan’s refining sector. He stressed that the revised policy must be implemented without delay and warned that negligence in executing the reforms would not be tolerated. The premier also directed relevant ministries and institutions to maintain close coordination with stakeholders to accelerate the reform process. In addition, he called for improvements in the performance of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to promote greater transparency, competition and investor confidence in the energy market. Pakistan has been seeking to strengthen its fuel security after recent regional tensions exposed the country’s vulnerability to supply disruptions. The absence of strategic petroleum reserves became a major concern during the conflict that affected oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting renewed urgency for energy sector reforms. The refining policy has faced repeated delays since its formulation. Although finalised in 2023 and approved the following year after years of consultations, implementation stalled when incentives were withdrawn in the federal budget, causing refinery upgrade agreements to be put on hold. Discussions resumed after the government addressed financial concerns raised by refinery operators and pledged measures to revive nearly $6 billion in planned investments. Industry stakeholders have continued to seek policy stability and tax-related assurances, arguing that unresolved issues, including sales tax on imported equipment and refinery inputs, have created financial challenges that threaten the viability of modernisation projects. The government has indicated that further measures will be introduced to facilitate investment and ensure the successful implementation of the refinery upgrade programme.

    KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has directed the provincial government to establish an independent committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the reported spread of HIV among children treated at Karachi’s Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital. A two-member bench, headed by Justice Adnanul Karim Memon and comprising Justice Muhammad Jaffer Raza, issued the directions while announcing its reserved judgment on a petition seeking an impartial investigation, medical treatment and compensation for affected children. The court noted that the departmental inquiries and reports submitted so far were not sufficient to establish the actual number of affected patients, determine how the virus was transmitted or assess whether proper infection-control procedures were followed. According to figures presented by the Sindh government, 78 children were identified as HIV-positive at the hospital, while screening in the surrounding area detected another 120 cases. However, the petitioner claimed that the number of infected children could be around 200. The court ordered the Sindh chief secretary to head the inquiry committee and include two senior government officers of at least BS-20 rank. The officers should preferably have no direct administrative connection with the hospital or the investigations already conducted. The committee has been directed to establish the exact number and identities of HIV-positive children and other patients who were treated at the hospital during the relevant period. It will also investigate the possible source and method of HIV transmission on the basis of medical and scientific evidence. The committee will examine whether disposable syringes or other medical equipment were reused, improperly discarded or inadequately sterilised in violation of medical standards and applicable laws. It will also review the hospital’s infection-prevention arrangements, including the procurement, storage and use of auto-lock, auto-destruct and auto-break syringes. The roles of doctors, nurses, technical staff, administrative officials and supervisors will also come under scrutiny. The committee will determine whether any official failed to fulfil a legal, administrative or supervisory responsibility. The inquiry will further assess ongoing departmental proceedings against 37 officials and determine whether those proceedings adequately address individual responsibility. Officials will also examine whether the Sindh Regulation and Control of Disposable Syringes Act, 2010, or any other relevant law was violated and identify those responsible if evidence establishes wrongdoing. The committee has been authorised to examine medical and laboratory reports, screening records, procurement and stock registers, syringe records, duty rosters, infection-control reports, inspection documents, departmental inquiry material and relevant CCTV footage. The inquiry must provide an opportunity for a fair hearing to anyone against whom adverse findings are proposed. The committee has been directed to submit its report to the competent authority and the high court within two months of its formation. The court also directed the Sindh chief secretary to ensure that all affected HIV-positive children and other identified patients receive uninterrupted medical care while the inquiry continues. The treatment must include medicines, diagnostic tests, counselling and follow-up care and must be provided completely free of cost. The government and SESSI will bear all expenses, and no costs are to be recovered from affected children or their families. Treatment should continue for as long as medically necessary. Given the vulnerability of the children, the court also ordered authorities to determine whether affected families are entitled to compensation, financial assistance or other relief under the relevant laws and government policies. The court stressed that no affected child or family should face discrimination, stigma or denial of lawful assistance because of HIV status. It further ordered authorities to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the children’s identities and medical records. The Sindh chief secretary and health department secretary were directed to take immediate corrective and preventive measures at the hospital to prevent further avoidable risks to patients. Authorities were also ordered to ensure strict compliance with infection-control procedures and the law governing disposable syringes. The court said the case involved fundamental rights, including the rights to life, health, dignity and fair treatment. It observed that the matter could not be treated merely as an administrative issue because the state has a constitutional responsibility to protect life and ensure proper public health and medical safety. At the same time, the court cautioned that allegations or departmental proceedings alone cannot establish the guilt of individual officials. Responsibility must be determined through evidence and after providing the concerned persons an opportunity to defend themselves. The court also took notice of an incident involving the petitioner, Advocate Tariq Mansoor, during proceedings. According to the order, Mansoor allegedly raised his voice and encouraged people accompanying him, while some individuals reportedly recorded videos inside the courtroom. The court said the incident disrupted proceedings and affected the dignity and decorum of the courtroom. It also noted that the situation was serious enough for the bench to retire to chambers before completing the order. The court issued a show-cause notice to Mansoor, asking why contempt and criminal proceedings should not be initiated against him. Court security officials were also directed to explain an alleged security lapse that allowed a group of people to enter the courtroom and disrupt proceedings. The Sindh High Court Bar Association and Sindh Bar Council were asked to intervene and take appropriate measures regarding the alleged misconduct.

Afridi also reviewed the party’s political efforts since October 15, 2025, stating that PTI had pursued constitutional and legal avenues to resolve political issues through dialogue.
