Sindh announces August 4 school holiday

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

According to an official notification issued by the department, the holiday will be observed on 20th Safar 1448 AH, marking the annual commemoration of Chehlum. The decision applies to all government and privately managed schools operating under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh.

The notification stated that the closure was approved following a decision taken during a meeting of the provincial Steering Committee held on February 12, 2026. It confirmed that all educational institutions under the department’s jurisdiction would remain closed on August 4 to facilitate the observance of the religious occasion.

Chehlum is observed every year on the 20th of Safar and marks the conclusion of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and companions in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The occasion holds immense religious significance for Muslims, particularly for those who participate in mourning gatherings and commemorative processions held across the country.

As part of the annual observances, mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah are expected to take place in several cities and towns across Sindh. Thousands of devotees traditionally participate in these events to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala.

In light of the large public gatherings expected during Chehlum, the Sindh Home Department has also announced additional security measures aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the province.

A day before the school holiday notification was issued, the Home Department imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding for the day of Chehlum. The temporary restriction is intended to strengthen security arrangements and minimise the risk of any untoward incidents during the religious processions and gatherings.

Authorities have clarified that the ban forms part of a broader security plan implemented each year for major religious occasions. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the measures while facilitating the safe conduct of mourning events.

In a separate notification, the Sindh Home Department also announced the extension of Section 144 across the province for another month. The renewed restrictions came into effect on August 1 and will remain in force as part of ongoing efforts to preserve public order.

Under Section 144, several activities have been prohibited throughout Sindh, including wall chalking, public rallies, demonstrations, and the open display of weapons. The restrictions are designed to prevent any activities that could disrupt peace or pose security concerns during the mourning period.

The provincial government has urged citizens to cooperate with the authorities and follow the issued guidelines to help ensure that Chehlum observances are conducted peacefully and securely across Sindh.

Oil prices fall as US-Iran pause raises hopes for Hormuz talks

Global oil prices dropped sharply on Monday after signs of easing tensions between the United States and Iran raised hopes that negotiations could resume over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Investors welcomed the temporary pause in military action, believing it could reduce the risk of further disruptions to global energy supplies. The decline came after both countries appeared to step back from recent hostilities. Following nearly two weeks of military exchanges, the United States did not carry out additional strikes over the weekend. President Donald Trump’s envoy to the United Nations said Washington was allowing diplomacy a chance by giving negotiations more time. Iran also announced that it would halt retaliatory attacks against neighboring countries, offering relief to Gulf shipping companies and international energy markets. The latest pause has renewed hopes that the fragile ceasefire between the two sides could be restored after breaking down earlier this month. The recent conflict began after Iran targeted vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a rapid escalation in tensions with the United States. The confrontation later spread beyond the Gulf, with Iran backed Houthi fighters in Yemen attacking Saudi ships near the Bab al Mandeb Strait, another critical maritime route linking the Red Sea with global trade networks. The fighting caused oil prices to surge, with Brent crude climbing above $100 per barrel for the first time since May. However, reports that shipping traffic through the Red Sea had continued without major disruption, combined with the latest diplomatic developments, encouraged traders to reduce their concerns over possible supply shortages. Iranian officials said discussions with Oman had made progress regarding the future management of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, the talks focused on establishing practical measures to ensure the safe movement of commercial vessels while respecting the sovereignty of countries bordering the strategic waterway. There were also reports that Pakistan was exploring efforts to revive peace talks between Washington and Tehran with support from China. Although no formal agreement has been announced, the diplomatic activity has strengthened expectations that both sides may return to negotiations instead of further military escalation. As a result, both major oil benchmarks recorded significant losses. Brent crude fell by more than seven percent during trading before recovering slightly, while West Texas Intermediate also declined sharply. Analysts said the market viewed the latest developments as a positive signal that reduced the immediate threat to global oil supplies. Lower oil prices also eased fears that renewed energy inflation could force central banks to raise interest rates again. This helped lift many stock markets across Asia, although technology shares continued to face pressure because of concerns about the long term returns on heavy investment in artificial intelligence. Stock markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Wellington, Manila, and Tokyo posted gains, while Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Jakarta closed lower. Investors remained cautious ahead of earnings reports from major technology companies including Samsung, SK hynix, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, with particular attention on future spending plans and investment in artificial intelligence. Market participants are also awaiting this week’s US Federal Reserve policy meeting. While expectations for another interest rate increase have grown slightly following recent geopolitical tensions, most analysts believe the central bank will leave rates unchanged for now. Even so, some economists continue to predict additional tightening before the end of the year if inflation remains above target. The combination of easing tensions in the Middle East and hopes for renewed diplomacy has provided financial markets with some relief, though investors remain alert to any developments that could quickly reverse the recent decline in oil prices.

Liverpool sign Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona

Liverpool have moved to strengthen their defence by signing Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona, giving the Uruguay international a fresh opportunity after falling down the pecking order at the Spanish club. Barcelona confirmed on Monday that Araujo will spend the 2026-27 season at Anfield, with the agreement running until June 30, 2027. The Catalan club did not reveal the financial terms, but reports in the Spanish media indicate that Liverpool will cover his wages and have an option to make the transfer permanent for €55 million ($63.5m). The move marks a significant change for Araujo, who had been regarded as one of Barcelona’s key defensive players. The 27-year-old renewed his contract with the Catalan giants in 2025, extending his deal until 2031. However, his position became increasingly uncertain under Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. Young defender Pau Cubarsi emerged as a central figure in the back line, while Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin also competed for defensive roles. Araujo made 35 appearances across all competitions last season but spent several weeks away from football because of mental exhaustion. After returning in January, he struggled to regain a regular starting position. His move to Liverpool comes at a crucial time for the Premier League club. Liverpool need defensive reinforcements after Ibrahima Konate departed for Real Madrid, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are currently injured. Araujo could therefore find himself playing an important role alongside experienced captain Virgil van Dijk, particularly as Liverpool begin a new chapter under Spanish coach Andoni Iraola. The Uruguayan defender, who was part of Uruguay’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not feature, said he was eager to begin his Liverpool journey. “I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history,” Araujo said. “I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated.” He described the transfer as the right move at this stage of his career, suggesting that regular football was an important factor behind his decision. Liverpool have also strengthened their defensive options by signing young French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. For Araujo, the challenge is clear: turn a difficult period at Barcelona into a new beginning at Anfield—and prove that he still belongs among Europe’s elite defenders.

China voices concern over new US trade curbs

BEIJING: China has raised strong concerns over the latest US trade restrictions, urging Washington to strengthen dialogue and maintain stable economic relations as both countries continue efforts to manage trade tensions. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed Beijing’s concerns during a video conference with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to Chinese state media. During the talks, both sides held detailed discussions on implementing the agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries. The officials also exchanged views on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation and addressing each other’s concerns through continued engagement. Beijing criticized the latest US trade measures, including the recently announced 12.5% tariff on Chinese imports, describing them as a source of concern for bilateral economic relations. Despite the differences, both sides agreed to continue using the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism to improve communication, strengthen mutual trust and reduce misunderstandings. They also pledged to expand cooperation and support the stable development of bilateral trade relations. The discussions come ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States later this year, a meeting widely seen as an opportunity to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Earlier agreements between Beijing and Washington included China’s commitment to address US concerns over the supply of rare earth minerals and related processing technologies. China also agreed to increase purchases of US agricultural products through 2028 as part of broader efforts to stabilize trade relations. The latest talks indicate that while differences remain over tariffs and trade policies, both governments continue to pursue diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation in economic disputes.

15.91% spike exposes federal spending challenge

Controlling the rise in federal government administrative expenses has become a major challenge. Despite repeated claims of reducing expenditure and implementing austerity measures, the cost of running federal government affairs has increased by 15.91 per cent. The rise has raised concerns over the government’s efforts to control its administrative spending. The increase comes despite measures announced by the government to reduce unnecessary expenditure and promote financial discipline. According to the available details, spending on running government affairs has exceeded both the official target and the revised estimates. This means that actual administrative expenditure has remained higher than the levels projected by the government. The increase in spending also highlights the difficulties faced by the federal government in keeping its administrative costs under control. The government has been under pressure to reduce non-development expenditure and improve the efficiency of public spending. Authorities have introduced various austerity measures in an attempt to limit government expenditure. These measures were aimed at reducing unnecessary costs and ensuring better management of public resources. However, the latest increase indicates that controlling administrative spending remains a significant challenge. The higher-than-target expenditure could also put additional pressure on the government’s overall fiscal position. The development comes at a time when the federal government is seeking to maintain fiscal discipline and reduce unnecessary spending. Higher administrative costs could make it more difficult to achieve these objectives. The government is expected to face continued pressure to review its spending patterns and identify areas where expenditure can be reduced

Police raid Attorney General’s Lahore home, 11 o…

Lahore police have registered a case against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sarwar Road Police Station and 10 other personnel following a raid at the residence of Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Awan. According to police, the officers had information about a house adjacent to the Attorney General’s residence. However, they allegedly entered the wrong property during the operation. The FIR states that the SHO and 11 police personnel were charged for allegedly exceeding their authority during the raid. The incident has also prompted further action against the officials involved. Awan’s driver, Irfan, claimed that the SHO and other police officers entered the house by jumping over the gate. He further alleged that the police took away the CCTV camera system during the raid. According to the driver, only domestic staff were present at the residence when the police arrived. The Attorney General reached home after finishing a meeting after being informed about the incident. Irfan also alleged that the police later returned the digital video recorder (DVR) after deleting CCTV footage from the system. The raid reportedly caused damage to property outside the residence, including flower pots placed near the entrance. Police officials said the raid was conducted based on information concerning the neighbouring house and that the officers mistakenly entered Awan’s residence. Meanwhile, the SHO of Sarwar Road Police Station has obtained interim bail from the court in connection with the case.
