Azma Bukhari mocks PPP over Lahore rally

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over its recent political gathering in Lahore.

She also extended birthday wishes to former president and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari.

In a statement, Bukhari said Zardari should be thankful that he had been spared the embarrassment of another poorly attended gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan.

Her remarks came after the PPP announced a Lahore gathering to mark Zardari’s birthday.

Bukhari questioned the decision to organise the event in Lahore. She said holding a gathering with a large number of empty chairs would be disrespectful to Zardari.

She also criticised those who advised the PPP leadership to hold the event in Lahore. She said the party should review the advice it receives from its provincial leadership.

Bukhari claimed that the Governor House Punjab had a large number of empty chairs during the gathering held the previous night.

She claimed around 2,000 chairs had been arranged for the event. However, she alleged that only around 150 people were present.

The minister used the reported attendance to question the PPP’s political standing in Punjab.

She said the party’s poor position in the province was partly linked to the information being provided to its leadership.

According to Bukhari, some party leaders are giving senior leadership inaccurate reports about the party’s popularity and political strength.

She said such reporting could prevent the PPP leadership from understanding the actual situation on the ground.

Bukhari also criticised the PPP’s Punjab leadership for what she described as misplaced priorities.

She alleged that the provincial leadership was more focused on the Punjab government than on strengthening the PPP itself.

The minister said the party should focus on expanding its political presence and improving its organisational structure in Punjab.

She argued that greater attention to party affairs could have prevented the PPP from reaching its current political position in the province.

Bukhari’s comments reflect the continuing political rivalry between the ruling Punjab setup and opposition parties in the province.

The PPP has traditionally maintained a political presence in Punjab. However, its influence in the province has faced challenges from major political parties.

The latest exchange also highlights the importance of public gatherings for political parties. Large rallies are often used to demonstrate public support and organisational strength.

Bukhari’s criticism focused heavily on the reported attendance at the Lahore event. She suggested that the number of participants did not match the scale of the arrangements.

The PPP has yet to publicly respond to all of Bukhari’s allegations.

Poland unveils Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue in tiny village

A towering new statue of the Virgin Mary has been unveiled in a small Polish village, instantly becoming the tallest statue anywhere in Europe. Standing at 55.6 metres, the monument now dominates the local skyline. The devotional sculpture was consecrated by a local bishop during a ceremony held on Saturday in the rural village of Konotopie. The unveiling comes at a notable moment, as the Catholic Church’s broader influence over public life in Poland continues to decline. Despite its scale, the statue sits in a remote location, far from any of Poland’s major population centres. Its placement was reportedly requested specifically by a wealthy local couple who funded the project. During the ceremony, two helicopters were seen circling above the towering figure, which stands with arms open and a large crown atop its head. The dramatic aerial display added to the significance of the occasion. While Poland remains a predominantly Catholic country, many younger Poles living in urban areas have grown increasingly distant from the church and its traditions. The statue’s unveiling arrives against that broader backdrop of shifting religious engagement. Among those attending Saturday’s ceremony was Lech Walesa, the former Polish president who played a central role in the collapse of communism in the country. Now 82, Walesa reflected on his own life journey in comments to the Associated Press, describing his story as one that started and ended with the Virgin Mary. Local authorities are hoping the massive structure will serve a dual purpose going forward, functioning as both a significant pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction. To support that goal, the statue includes a viewing platform built directly into its base, offering visitors a chance to take in sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The unveiling adds Poland to the small list of countries hosting record-breaking religious monuments, and local officials appear hopeful the structure will draw visitors from well beyond the immediate region in the years ahead.

Former Sindh Assembly member Ghulam Rasool Anr has approached a court seeking registration of a case against his former wife over alleged fraud, blackmail and death threats. In his petition, Anr said he first became acquainted with the woman through social media. He claimed that whenever he asked her to show her face, she would send him images allegedly generated using artificial intelligence. According to the petitioner, the two got married through a video call on February 23 this year. He said the woman was wearing a veil even on the day of the marriage. Anr claimed that after the marriage, he saw the woman in person and found her appearance completely different from the pictures she had previously sent him. He said that after seeing her face, he distanced himself from her and subsequently divorced her on August 9. The former lawmaker further alleged that following the divorce, the woman began blackmailing him and allegedly threatening to kill him. He has asked the court to direct police to register a case against his former wife and take legal action over the allegations. The court has issued a notice to the police and sought a report by August 17. The allegations contained in the petition have yet to be established in court.

Trump cuts childhood vaccine recommendations as doctors warn of health risks

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday calling for fewer childhood vaccinations, limiting core federal guidance to immunisations against 11 diseases. Trump stated the adjustments would offer children “gold-standard” protection while bringing US policies in line with foreign nations that recommend fewer routine shots. The executive directive advises breaking up the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three distinct doses administered across separate clinical visits. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has long advocated for reductions in the pediatric vaccine schedule. Medical researchers and global health bodies have repeatedly debunked claims championed by Kennedy alleging a causal link between routine childhood vaccines and autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics and pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck sharply criticised the executive action. “We are evaluating our next steps,” stated Richard Hughes IV, lead legal counsel for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Merck noted there is no published scientific evidence demonstrating clinical advantages to unbundling the MMR vaccine, warning the mandate could induce delayed or skipped immunisations. Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, a practicing physician, publicly broke with the administration over the decree. “I’m a doctor. This executive order is wrong. The president does not have the expertise to make these changes,” Cassidy said. Cassidy cautioned that unbundling combination shots will force children to endure a higher volume of individual injections to secure identical protection.

PM Shehbaz accuses India of backing terrorism, urg…

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday accused India of playing a direct role in terrorism inside Pakistan and urged Afghanistan’s interim government to prevent militant groups from using its territory to launch attacks across the border. Addressing participants at the Balochistan National Workshop, the prime minister said Pakistan had successfully eliminated terrorism by 2018, but claimed that violence later resurfaced as part of what he described as a “well-organized conspiracy.” “India’s role in terrorism inside Pakistan is evident,” Shehbaz said, adding that the country had paid an enormous price in the fight against militancy, with more than 90,000 Pakistanis losing their lives over the years. Referring to the recent killing of a session judge in Mastung, the prime minister described the incident as another reminder of the continuing terrorist threat facing the country. He stressed that defeating terrorism requires a united national response involving state institutions and the public. Shehbaz also called on Afghanistan’s interim authorities to ensure that Afghan soil is not used by militant groups to carry out attacks against Pakistan. While emphasizing the importance of good relations between the two neighboring countries, he expressed regret that the Afghan administration had failed to stop terrorist elements operating from its territory. The prime minister said Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for regional peace had received international recognition, adding that the country’s recent achievements had unsettled its adversaries. He praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for their diplomatic initiatives aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s regional and international engagement. Turning to development, Shehbaz highlighted the strategic importance of Balochistan, describing it as Pakistan’s largest province by area and the smallest by population. He said the people of Balochistan had always played a vital role in strengthening the federation and assured them that their sacrifices would never be forgotten. He also announced that construction work on the dual carriageway linking Karachi and Chaman was progressing, calling it a major infrastructure project expected to improve connectivity and economic activity in the province. Discussing the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, the prime minister said Punjab had made significant contributions for Balochistan while the other provinces had also extended full support. He pledged to correct past shortcomings and ensure every province receives its constitutional share of national resources. Responding to questions from workshop participants, Shehbaz said Pakistan’s future prosperity depends on the collective efforts of all four provinces, expressing confidence that the country is ready to embark on a new phase of national development while continuing its fight against terrorism.
