Sindh Cabinet approves toll tax for heavy commerci…

The Sindh provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, has approved the imposition of a toll tax on heavy commercial vehicles using the Mehran Highway. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting as part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to establish a sustainable financial system for the maintenance and development of road infrastructure across Sindh.

According to the cabinet’s decision, the toll tax will apply exclusively to heavy and commercial vehicles traveling on the 135-kilometer-long Mehran Highway. Private passenger vehicles will not be subject to the new toll under the current policy. Officials stated that commercial transport vehicles place greater pressure on road infrastructure due to their size and weight, making it appropriate for them to contribute to the highway’s maintenance through toll payments.

During the meeting, cabinet members received a detailed briefing on the ongoing development of the Mehran Highway. Officials informed the cabinet that the project to expand the highway into a dual carriageway is currently underway at an estimated cost of Rs41 billion. The project is intended to improve road safety, increase transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, and accommodate the growing volume of traffic, particularly heavy commercial vehicles that regularly use the route for the movement of goods.

The briefing also highlighted the expected financial benefits of the toll collection system. It was estimated that the toll tax would generate approximately Rs2.14 billion in annual gross revenue. After deducting operational and administrative expenses associated with collecting the toll, the government expects a net annual income of around Rs1.48 billion. These funds are intended to support the regular maintenance, repair, and future upgrading of the highway, ensuring that it remains in good condition for years to come.

The cabinet further approved a schedule of toll charges based on different categories of vehicles. Under this system, toll rates will vary according to the type, size, and classification of each vehicle. Heavy trucks, trailers, buses, and other commercial transport vehicles will be charged according to predetermined rates. Officials explained that this category-based approach is designed to make the toll system fair and proportionate, with larger vehicles contributing more because of the greater wear and tear they cause to road infrastructure.

In another significant administrative decision, the Sindh cabinet approved the restoration of the traditional name of the provincial department responsible for road construction and public infrastructure. The department, which had previously been renamed the Works and Services Department will once again be known as the Communication and Works Department. The government stated that the name change is intended to align Sindh’s administrative structure with that of the federal government and other provinces, where the department is commonly known by the same title.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the Sindh government is committed to introducing a self-sustaining financial model for the long-term maintenance of highways and road networks. He said that relying solely on government budget allocations is not sufficient to meet the increasing costs of maintaining modern transportation jobs infrastructure. According to him, the introduction of toll collection on major highways will provide a stable source of revenue that can be reinvested directly into road maintenance and improvement projects.

The Chief Minister added that better roads are essential for economic growth, trade, and public safety. By ensuring a reliable funding mechanism for highway upkeep, the government aims to enhance transportation services, reduce infrastructure deterioration, and improve connectivity throughout the province. The approval of the toll tax and the continuation of the Mehran Highway expansion project represent important steps toward achieving these long-term development objectives while promoting a more efficient and financially sustainable road network in Sindh.

Benjamin Netanyahu sparks diplomatic backlash after labelling UK an “Islamic republic”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has drawn widespread criticism following a radio interview in which he referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” and suggested it could become the first Islamic republic with nuclear capabilities. The remarks, delivered during a broadcast on Israel’s Army Radio, have drawn condemnation for echoing far-right Islamophobic rhetoric. During the exchange, Netanyahu contrasted media coverage of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war with modern British politics, questioning whether contemporary UK figures would offer similar support. Pressed by the interviewer on whether such dynamics applied to Europe as a whole, Netanyahu doubled down, repeating the assertion regarding Britain’s nuclear status. His comments notably ignored the fact that Pakistan, officially an Islamic republic, has possessed a nuclear arsenal since the late 1990s. The incident has heightened existing diplomatic tensions between London and Jerusalem. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office described the statement as completely unacceptable and confirmed the matter had been raised directly with the Israeli government. Domestically, Israeli opposition figures criticized Netanyahu for alienating a strategic international partner amid mounting diplomatic isolation.

Sahir Ali Bagga reveals why two singers rejected Pakistan Zindabad

Pakistani musician and singer Sahir Ali Bagga has made a surprising revelation about one of his most notable patriotic projects, Pakistan Zindabad. The acclaimed composer recently disclosed that two prominent Pakistani singers were initially approached to perform the song but refused to sing it. Sahir Ali Bagga is one of the well-known names in Pakistan’s music industry. Over the years, he has established himself as a singer, composer and music producer, contributing to numerous popular songs and drama soundtracks. He has also composed successful tracks for leading artists, including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Known for his deep vocals and ability to hit powerful high notes, Bagga has delivered several memorable songs throughout his career. His popular compositions include Baazi, Mast Malang, Ehd-e-Wafa and Bharosa Pyar Tera. He also enjoys a massive following on Instagram, where more than 1.8 million people follow him. In recent months, his song Mastani has also attracted considerable attention, crossing 5.5 million views on YouTube. Bagga recently appeared on Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast, Excuse Me, where he spoke openly about the making of Pakistan Zindabad. During the conversation, he revealed that the song was originally composed with two major Pakistani singers in mind. According to Bagga, both singers were expected to lend their voices to the patriotic track. However, neither agreed to perform it. He explained that one of the singers did not even listen to the composition and specifically refused to sing the song because Bagga had created it. The musician said that although he was disappointed by their response, he remained confident in his composition. Since the song had already received approval from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Bagga ultimately decided to perform it himself. He further revealed that singing Pakistan Zindabad was particularly challenging because the composition required extremely high notes. Bagga admitted that he does not consider himself a high-note singer and had to put in significant effort to prepare for the performance. The singer explained that reaching such demanding notes required extensive practice. He worked hard on his vocals and rehearsed repeatedly before recording the song, eventually taking on the challenge himself. Pakistan Zindabad went on to become a major patriotic hit. The song was released on March 23, several years ago, and quickly gained widespread popularity among Pakistani audiences. Its energetic composition, patriotic lyrics and powerful vocal performance helped it become one of the memorable ISPR songs. The song has continued to attract viewers on YouTube and has reportedly accumulated around 249 million views. Bagga’s revelation about the singers who turned down the project has now added another interesting chapter to the story behind the hugely popular patriotic anthem. While he did not disclose the names of the two singers during the portion of the conversation shared, his comments have sparked curiosity among fans about which major artists originally declined the opportunity to perform Pakistan Zindabad.

‘Patience has run out’: JI warns government

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government of expanding protests across the country if the petroleum levy is not withdrawn. Speaking at a press conference at the party’s ongoing protest camp outside the Punjab chief minister’s residence in Lahore on Tuesday, the JI chief said the demonstrations had entered their 10th day. He said public patience had reached its limit and demanded immediate relief from rising fuel prices and taxes. Rehman warned that the party could announce a nationwide strike, block roads and march towards Islamabad if the government failed to meet its demands. The JI leader said the date for a nationwide shutdown would be announced on 13th Rabi-ul-Awwal. He added that demonstrations would continue during Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ. According to Rehman, the JI had mobilised supporters in all four provinces. He said the protest movement would be expanded if the government continued to ignore public concerns. He criticised the petroleum levy and other fuel-related taxes, saying ordinary citizens were struggling to cope with increasing living costs. He particularly highlighted the difficulties faced by commuters, students, workers and motorcyclists. Rehman also demanded that the price of roti be reduced to Rs10. The JI emir accused the government of placing the burden of economic difficulties on the public. He argued that fuel price increases had added to the financial pressure on households while the government had failed to provide sufficient relief. He also raised concerns about alleged irregularities in coal imported for independent power producers (IPPs). Rehman called for a forensic audit and an independent investigation into coal-related transactions. He claimed that consumers were being made to pay for expensive fuel, electricity that was not produced and costly arrangements involving IPPs. He said the public should not be forced to bear the financial consequences of alleged mismanagement. Rehman recalled the JI’s earlier campaign against IPPs and claimed that public pressure had helped reduce electricity prices by around Rs10 per unit. The JI chief said his party was prepared to intensify its campaign if the government failed to respond. He described a nationwide shutdown, road blockades and a march on Islamabad as possible next steps. “Do not test our resolve,” he warned. Rehman also criticised the political system and questioned the performance of the ruling coalition. He alleged that governments without genuine public support remained unable to address the problems faced by ordinary citizens. He criticised the PPP’s governance in Sindh and raised concerns about what he called political families dominating Punjab. He also questioned the continued delay in holding local government elections. Regarding the Punjab government, the JI leader said its major announcements could not hide failures in dealing with basic public problems. Rehman maintained that the JI’s campaign was aimed at securing relief for the people rather than serving any personal or political interest. He invited the government’s negotiating team to visit the protest camp and clearly explain when the petroleum levy would be abolished. He said the JI would not travel to Islamabad simply to attend another briefing without concrete assurances. The JI emir also commented on a recent incident involving a security official at Sarhad University of Science and Information Technology in Islamabad. He demanded a transparent, merit-based investigation and said legal action should be taken against anyone found responsible, regardless of their position.

Democrats select Crowley, Flanagan as Republicans back Demuth in key state races

Democratic socialist Francesca Hong and moderate David Crowley are locked in an extraordinarily tight contest for Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial nomination, while Minnesota voters selected progressive Peggy Flanagan for the US Senate and Republican Lisa Demuth for governor. With 80 per cent of the votes counted in Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley held a narrow lead of just a few hundred votes over Hong. The outcome remains too close to call in a race widely seen as a major test of progressive policy appeal in a crucial battleground state. Hong, a state representative and former chef, ran on a platform advocating for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a temporary moratorium on data centres, and increased corporate taxes. Her campaign faced late scrutiny over past social media posts concerning Thanksgiving, which she subsequently clarified. The victor of the Democratic primary will face Republican nominee US Representative Tom Tiffany in November. In Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, Democrats selected Rebecca Cooke to challenge Trump-aligned Republican incumbent Derrick Van Orden. Cooke, a former small business owner and waitress who has out-fundraised Van Orden, secured backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” programme. Across the state line in Minnesota, Democratic voters chose Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan as their US Senate nominee over moderate Representative Angie Craig. Flanagan, who campaigned on dismantling ICE, will seek the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Tina Smith. In Minnesota’s Republican gubernatorial primary, State House Speaker Lisa Demuth secured the nomination, defeating former MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell despite his high-profile endorsement from Donald Trump. Demuth now advances to challenge Democratic nominee Senator Amy Klobuchar in the general election.
