Sony, Warner Music sue Anthropic over songs used in AI training

The music publishing branches of Sony Music and Warner Music have sued Anthropic in California federal court for allegedly misusing their copyrighted song compositions to train its Claude AI models.

Sony and Warner said in the complaint, filed on Friday, August 28, that Anthropic pirated hundreds of song lyrics and sheet music from The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, and hundreds of other artists to train Claude to respond to human prompts.

The lawsuit is the latest in a wave of cases brought against tech companies by copyright owners including authors, publishers, music labels and news outlets over the use of their work to train AI systems. Universal Music Group sued Anthropic in 2023 and earlier this year over the alleged use of copyrighted song lyrics in AI training, in lawsuits that are still ongoing.

Anthropic became the first AI company to settle one of the disputes last year, when it paid $1.5 billion to resolve a class action from a group of authors.

“Anthropic clearly considers that to be just the cost of doing business given that its entire business model continues to be built on copyright theft,” Sony and Warner said in their complaint. “And $1.5 billion is obviously not a large enough settlement to deter infringing conduct by a company that has parlayed such mass infringement into a staggering 2-trillion-dollar valuation.”

“This is the third lawsuit from the same lawyers, recycling allegations from cases already before the courts,” an Anthropic spokesperson said on Monday. The spokesperson also said that the company will defend itself “robustly” and that AI training makes fair use of copyrighted material, citing the judge in the authors’ case against it.

Spokespeople and an attorney for Sony Music and Warner Music did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the case on Monday.

The complaint alleges Anthropic illegally obtained the publishers’ lyrics and sheet music through torrent downloads to train Claude, and that Claude can reproduce copyrighted lyrics “verbatim” when prompted.

Sony and Warner also said Anthropic used their lyrics to teach Claude to “generate vast quantities of purportedly ‘new’ AI-generated song lyrics, which compete with Music Publishers’ legitimate copyrighted works as harmful market substitutes.”

The labels are seeking damages of up to $150,000 for each infringed copyright and a court order barring Anthropic from using their works. – Rappler.com

    Samsung chip profit soars 250-fold as AI supply deals pile up

    Samsung Electronics stunned markets on Thursday with news that its chip division’s profit had surged more than 250-fold. Alongside the results, the company revealed fresh multi-year supply agreements with major data center operators. It also warned that global chip shortages are likely to worsen and could persist well into 2028. That bold forecast, however, was not enough to calm investor nerves. Concerns remain high over the enormous sums tech firms are pouring into AI infrastructure. Samsung’s shares rose as much as 8.4 percent during trading before closing 0.7 percent lower. Even with that dip, the stock outperformed rival SK Hynix, which closed down a sharper 5.6 percent the same day. Kim Seok-hwan, a market analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said sentiment around chipmakers has shifted. Investors, he noted, are increasingly unsure how long today’s unusually high profit margins can be maintained. This comes right after Samsung’s chip business posted a record-breaking 70 percent operating profit margin. Samsung revealed it has already struck supply agreements with the five biggest data center companies globally. The firm added that it is close to finalizing deals with five more major players, though it did not name them. Jaejune Kim, executive vice president of Samsung’s memory division, told analysts that nearly every client is now asking for long-term, multi-year contracts instead of short-term arrangements. According to Kim, Samsung wants roughly two-thirds of its memory output locked into long-term supply deals. This approach echoes similar moves by SK Hynix, both aiming to shield themselves from the industry’s usual boom-and-bust swings. These new contracts generally span at least five years and often include upfront payments along with guaranteed floor prices, helping companies manage the financial risk tied to heavy capital spending. This announcement follows several rough months for chip stocks, driven largely by investor unease over ballooning AI infrastructure costs and rising competitive pressure from Chinese chipmakers. Both factors have raised doubts about how sustainable current earnings levels really are. Adding to that unease, Meta Platforms disclosed a steep 91 percent drop in its second-quarter free cash flow on Wednesday. That followed an even more striking development from Alphabet the week before, which reported its first-ever quarter with negative cash flow. Together, these results have intensified questions across the industry about whether the current pace of AI spending can hold up much longer without straining company finances.

However, behind every generated sentence lies a physical network of high-powered data centers. These facilities consume massive volumes of electricity and millions of gallons of water to cool servers. This illusion of effortless command reflects the dynamic in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In the play, the exiled duke Prospero rules a remote island through sorcery. He forces the spirit Ariel and the native inhabitant Caliban into servitude. Prospero’s magical feats appear grand and detached from the labor and coercion required to maintain his power. Modern AI systems operate on a similar logic. The seamless magic of AI algorithms obscures the extractive resource demands and physical labor that sustain them. Prospero’s dominance depended on usurping Caliban’s land and subjugating its inhabitants. Similarly, the expansion of tech infrastructure often targets marginalized or rural territories. The reasons are land and natural resources that can be acquired with minimal resistance. A real-world example unfolded within the Mvskoke Nation in Oklahoma. A proposed legislative bill, NCA 25-077, sought to establish the Mvskoke Technology and Innovation Park. The bill was put on the table to bring major data centers to tribal lands. However, Indigenous citizens, including Jordan Harmon and Mackenzie Roberts, showed strong opposition. They highlighted the facilities’ ravenous water and energy consumption. They raised concerns regarding digital surveillance.  Framing the development as a continuation of historical colonial exploitation. Due to community pressure and concerns, the tribal council ultimately rejected the proposal. Postcolonial scholars have long viewed The Tempest as a critique of colonial dynamics. They have  drawn direct parallels between Prospero’s rule and imperial subjugation. In the play, Prospero surrenders his magical powers only after securing his own political goals. It demonstrates that rulers rarely give up power purely out of goodwill.   The successful resistance within the Mvskoke Nation highlights an essential difference between literature and real-life action. Unlike Shakespeare’s characters, real communities are actively demanding accountability from corporate giants. Their resistance demonstrates that the unchecked expansion of data centers is not an inevitable trajectory. By pushing back against resource-extractive technology models, Indigenous and local communities are forcing a necessary public conversation about who truly benefits from artificial intelligence and who pays the hidden costs.
