Sri Lanka strengthens prison security after deadly riot at overcrowded jail

Sri Lankan authorities have stepped up security measures at prisons across the country after a violent riot at Mahara Prison left one person dead and six others injured. The latest unrest has once again highlighted the serious overcrowding and growing pressure within the country’s prison system.

The violence broke out on Saturday at Mahara Prison, located about 15 kilometres from the capital Colombo. According to police sources, the disturbance began during family visiting hours when a group of inmates climbed onto rooftops, set fire to a building inside the prison compound and damaged several facilities. The unrest also resulted in the destruction of documents kept in administrative offices, while parts of the prison hospital, training centre and kitchen suffered extensive damage.

Law enforcement agencies, supported by the military and other security personnel, were deployed to regain control of the situation. Officials said the operation successfully ended the riot and prevented further violence from spreading within the prison. The Sri Lankan Air Force also assisted by deploying helicopters and drones to monitor the prison complex during the emergency.

The incident has renewed concerns about the country’s overcrowded prisons. Mahara Prison currently holds around 4,100 inmates despite having space for only about one quarter of that number. Similar conditions exist throughout Sri Lanka’s prison network, where more than 41,000 convicted prisoners are housed in 22 facilities built to accommodate only around 11,000 inmates. In addition to convicted prisoners, thousands of remand prisoners awaiting trial are also being held in these facilities, adding to the strain on available space and resources.

The latest violence comes only weeks after another deadly prison clash in the coastal town of Negombo. In early July, fighting between rival inmate groups resulted in the deaths of 10 prison officials and 20 prisoners over two days. Authorities described that incident as the country’s worst prison violence since 2012, prompting the deployment of police special forces, the military and navy to restore order.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajeewa Medawatta said security has now been increased at major prisons across the country, particularly those located near Colombo, including Negombo Prison. He said officials have transferred inmates back to their cells and are ensuring they receive food and water as normal while security operations continue. According to Medawatta, the combined efforts of police, military and prison authorities were crucial in bringing the Mahara situation under control.

Outside the prison, dozens of worried relatives gathered on Saturday evening seeking information about family members inside. Police established security cordons to prevent crowds from approaching the prison during the operation. To maintain public order, authorities also imposed a temporary curfew in three nearby villages. The restrictions remained in place overnight before being lifted by midday on Sunday after officials confirmed the situation had stabilised.

The repeated outbreaks of violence have intensified calls for reforms within Sri Lanka’s prison system. Human rights groups and legal experts have long warned that severe overcrowding, ageing infrastructure and limited resources have created dangerous conditions that increase the risk of unrest. The latest incident has added further pressure on the government to address these long standing challenges while ensuring the safety of both prison staff and inmates.

Spain accuses EU allies of ‘selfish’ r…

Spain has accused several European Union governments of a selfish and unlawful reaction after nearly 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, triggering a wave of statements from EU member states calling for tighter border restrictions. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, described the response from unnamed member states as selfish, polarizing and unlawful. According to a report by the British broadcaster, Sanchez said Madrid had restored order within 48 hours, returning most of the migrants to Morocco and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe. The diplomatic dispute was triggered largely by Italy’s response, which included a temporary suspension of visa free travel with Spain under the Schengen arrangement, along with pointed criticism accusing Madrid of encouraging human trafficking by granting citizenship to more than 500,000 people who had entered the country irregularly. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on social media that he supports closing the Schengen area to Spain and expressed confidence in the actions of Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi. He said uncontrolled and irregular immigration represents a threat to national security, and argued that the situation unfolding in Ceuta demonstrates how Spain’s decision to naturalize large numbers of irregular immigrants was fundamentally wrong and only encourages trafficking. Italy was not alone in calling for a tougher stance. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis went further, calling for Spain to be suspended immediately from the 29 member Schengen arrangement. Finland and Denmark also voiced support for stricter border controls in response to the crisis. Notably, Ceuta itself lies outside the Schengen zone, meaning the enclave is not directly governed by the same free movement rules at the center of the diplomatic dispute between Madrid and its European partners. The clash highlights long standing tensions within the European Union over how to handle migration pressure at its external borders, an issue that has repeatedly strained relations between member states with differing approaches to asylum policy, border enforcement and integration in recent years.

Johnny Depp unveils new look as Scrooge for upcomi…

Johnny Depp has officially unveiled his dramatic transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge, giving fans their first look at his highly anticipated new film, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. The veteran actor appears almost unrecognizable in the role, sporting a weathered Victorian look complete with gray facial hair, bushy eyebrows, a top hat, a long overcoat, and a walking cane. The striking makeover has already generated excitement among movie lovers eager to see Depp return to a major studio production.  The first trailer introduces Ebenezer as a darker and more atmospheric adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless novel A Christmas Carol. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ti West, who is best known for his horror films, the movie blends classic storytelling with supernatural suspense. Instead of presenting a traditional holiday tale, the film leans into the eerie encounters between Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, promising a fresh take on the beloved story.  Depp recently surprised fans by appearing in full Scrooge costume during San Diego Comic-Con, where he stayed in character while greeting the audience. The actor playfully interacted with fans and cosplayers dressed as some of his most iconic characters, including Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and Willy Wonka. His theatrical entrance added to the buzz surrounding the film and highlighted his commitment to the role.  The upcoming movie also boasts an impressive supporting cast. Andrea Riseborough portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past, while legendary actor Ian McKellen takes on the role of Jacob Marley. Rupert Grint stars as Bob Cratchit, with Daisy Ridley and Sam Claflin also joining the ensemble. Together, the cast aims to breathe new life into one of literature’s most enduring holiday classics.  For Depp, Ebenezer represents an important milestone in his career. It marks his first leading role in a major Hollywood studio film in several years and showcases his signature ability to disappear into eccentric and complex characters. Throughout his career, Depp has earned praise for memorable performances in films such as Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His portrayal of Scrooge continues that tradition of transformative acting.  Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 13, 2026. With its haunting visuals, star-studded cast, and a darker interpretation of Dickens’ classic tale, the film is already shaping up to be one of the year’s most talked-about releases. Fans will soon discover whether Johnny Depp’s haunting version of Ebenezer Scrooge becomes another unforgettable performance in his celebrated career.

Unbeaten Pakistan seal CAVA volleyball title over Bangladesh

Pakistan wrapped up a truly dominant campaign by winning the Central Asian Volleyball Association Championship on Wednesday. The home side defeated Bangladesh in straight sets during the final, played at the Liaquat Gymnasium within the Pakistan Sports Complex. This victory extended Pakistan’s unbeaten record across the entire six-nation tournament, which also included Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. Throughout the match, Pakistan looked in complete control. Their serving was powerful, their blocking well organized, and their attacking play sharp and consistent. Bangladesh struggled to find any rhythm against such a well-rounded performance. Pakistan took the opening set 25-20 before stepping things up even further in the second, winning it comfortably 25-16 through disciplined, coordinated play. Bangladesh showed some fight in the third set and briefly threatened a comeback. Pakistan, however, refused to let the momentum slip and closed out the match 25-20, sealing the championship in front of a jubilant home crowd. The win marked a perfect end to the tournament for Pakistan, who finished all seven matches unbeaten and did not drop a single set throughout the competition. Following this achievement, Pakistan climbed eight spots in the FIVB world rankings, moving up to 38th place globally. This also makes them the sixth-ranked team in Asia, sitting just behind Japan, Iran, Qatar, South Korea, and China. In the other major result of the day, Sri Lanka secured the bronze medal after a hard-fought five-set win over Uzbekistan in the third-place playoff. Kazakhstan finished the tournament in fifth position, while Nepal ended up at the bottom of the standings. Following the win, Pakistan Volleyball Federation chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob offered his congratulations to the team. He praised the players, coaches, and support staff for their contribution to the victory, describing it as the result of consistent hard work and discipline. He also thanked everyone involved in organizing the event, including sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who helped make it a success. Federation president Sohail Khawar Mir echoed similar sentiments, calling the achievement a strong reflection of Pakistan’s talent and preparation. He pointed out how difficult it is to win an entire tournament without dropping a single set, calling it a rare and impressive feat. Sohail also praised Bangladesh’s performance throughout the event and thanked the other competing nations for making it a strong, competitive championship. He added that the tournament had helped grow the sport’s presence in the region while boosting Pakistan’s reputation as a reliable host for international sporting events.
