Android 17’s first big update tests Pixel owners’ patience: A Practical Look

Google’s first major update to Android 17 is reportedly causing problems for a number of Pixel phone users.

Android 17 QPR1 – which stands for Quarterly Platform Release 1 – began rolling out to phones from the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL right down to the Pixel 6 on 15 September.

Given the number of bugs and glitches found in the original Android 17 release, this was seen as a blessed relief by many. However, Android 17 QPR1 might not be quite the super-clean update that was needed.

Android Authority has been running a user poll on Google’s first major Android 17 update, and more than two-thirds of the respondents have reported new problems since installation.

Android 17 QPR1 issues – the breakdown

It’s worth stating that the most popular single response here was that Android 17 QPR1 hadn’t caused any fresh problems. Some 32% of responders are seemingly having a grand old time with their updated Pixel phones – though it doesn’t rule out previous bugs which haven’t been resolved.

What’s more, that still leaves a whopping 68% reporting issues. The most common seems to be with performance, followed by unexpected UI behaviour, display glitches, connectivity failures, and finally a small slice of undesignated issues.

We should point out (as the website does) that this doesn’t mean that two-thirds of all Pixel owners are having issues with the Android 17 QPR1 update. You’re always more likely to contribute to such polls when you have an issue yourself.

Still, it’s a reason for concern, and part of a rocky first few months of Android 17. We’ve seen reports of dropping Wi-Fi signals, display glitches and more.

Here’s hoping Android 17 QPR2 brings a little more stability in December. In the meantime, I’d be wary of updating your Pixel phone if you haven’t already.
