This week we asked you what car had the best brochure of all time? Normally, being bombarded with sales collateral isn’t an experience we’d sign up for voluntarily, but the brochures you shared had us thoroughly delighted from start to finish.
With the Gruppe P collection from Bond Group and Road Scholars, we’ve been celebrating Porsche’s 75th anniversary for three years running. With the superlative Stuttgarters they keep bringing to the site, the collection (now at nine parts and counting) just keeps getting more exciting. Several of the Porsches offered in Part IX have our jaws on the floor, including our first-ever Porsche 904 GTS, our third Porsche 910 (the first—chassis #022—appeared in Part I), a pair of 356 Speedsters with your choice of taillights, a factory-built 914-6 GT Group 4 racer, and a Carrera GT with less than 2k miles on the clock.
Our newest treasure trove of onboard clips comes from Robbert Alblas, who for the last three years has been filling up his YouTube channel with rich cinematic footage taken from behind the wheel of various historic racers. This week we’re highlighting a video featuring a faithfully recreated Ferrari 250 GTO ripping through an old layout of the Zandvoort circuit with Dutch racing legend Nicky Pastorelli at the helm. This particular car was built over several years by Ferrari specialists Roelofs Engineering using a mix of original factory components and custom parts. And while not one of the original cars produced in the early ’60s, it’s a 250 GTO in every other way.

“I took my driving test in my Mom’s 75′ Grand Safari Wagon.(same body as this car). one of the longest cars ever built.. I had to parallel park it to get my license.
After going through a blinking red light, the state patrol officer said if you can get this car out of this space without turning over any of the traffic cones, he would give me my license.. My father was laughing so hard he almost fell down.
Some how I ended up with my drivers license..”

“The “Daytona 500” connection is quite plausible. Pontiac VP of PR Bob Emerick was a good friend of Bill France Sr., and Pontiac was the official pace car at Daytona for many years.
As part of that arrangement, speedway executives all drove new “loaner” Pontiacs, and many were allowed to “spec’ them any way they wanted. A loaded full-size wagon could have been part of this rotation.

Going through the gears it just sings, the shifter like a rifle bolt unlike any other. The pedals are place PERFECTLY for heal and toeing. The intake and exhaust climbs to insane levels particularly in 2nd gear, the balance and steering weight are just sublime. Brake pedal feel is just right.…”

In this encore episode, the legendary Bruce Meyer talks about his early discovery of BaT, his start as a paper boy, racing motorcycles in college, his first Porsche, race cars built by hot rodders, a lifetime of Cobras, Tahoe in the 1960s, “air cars”, his involvement with the Petersen Automotive Museum, and his love of the LA lowrider community.

It was my twelfth August. 1973. Late on a Friday evening following another wretchedly hot and humid day in sludgoville. The sludgos didn’t have air conditioning—only rich people had that—so I was trying to beat the heat by soaking in our bathtub, which was filled up to my shoulders with cold water and every ice cube I could find in the freezer. I was listening to KSLG-AM on my trusty Panasonic transistor enjoying the scratchy-staticky country sounds of Donna Fargo and Mel Tillis and Charley Pride when the top-of-the-hour hit and the news came on. The tersely-toned broadcaster introduced himself—‘Doug Dickerson,’ or something like that—then dove in to his report, eagerly noting there was plenty happening in the world that night. Said that the war in Vietnam might actually be over for good. That something was up between President Nixon and a hotel in DC with a funky name. That one of the astronauts on Skylab 3 had doubled the world-record for length of a space walk. That Willie Mays—the Say Hey Kid—had hit his six-hundred-sixtieth home run. And so on and so on and so on, but as I laid there in the tub with the ice cubes melting and my fingers and toes getting pruny I couldn’t have cared less about any of that junk. I had only one thing on my mind—the dead body in Old Man Granger’s garage.

“@gtrdave I really like your comment about how 1967 fits in the Mopar muscle evolution. Up to this point the engineers were designing and building race cars and the styling was irrelevant to their efforts. Marketing was catching on to what was going on with the GTO and subsequent successes by the competition even though Mopar still held the performance advantage. “Scoops and stripes” and cool names were the answer and the 1967 B-bodies nailed it. Even if you couldn’t afford the Hemi the 440…”
