The DriverSource Legends Collection, Volume 3 — Explained

Over the past nine months, DriverSource has wowed us with Volume 1 and Volume 2 of their Legends Collection. Like clockwork, they’re back with Volume 3. This installment of the collection features six exotic and high-performance vehicles of the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s from Europe and the UK. Auctions will begin going live on August 27, and additional lots will be added in the following days.

A preview of the collection continues below. Just to mix things up we’re going to order the cars by height, starting with the lowest.

1992 Lamborghini Diablo

Sneaking under the barriers at 43.5″ is this black-on-black Diablo. This is a rear-wheel-drive example with a gated five-speed manual gearbox taking its cues from a 485-horsepower 5.7-liter V12. The period audio system is too legit to quit, keeping the ’90s alive with an Alpine cassette deck and a CD changer.

1993 Jaguar XJ220

The XJ220 was Jaguar’s slinkiest of cats, and this example spent many years on the 37th floor of an office building in Tokyo (which it surely shared with an expensive saltwater aquarium, lots of black leather furniture, and a corporate overlord-type movie villain). The car was imported to the US in 2015, and thankfully it’s now back on terra firma and can be seen spitting flames in this 2016 episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.

2009 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Coupe

With its Bianco Monocerus exterior and Bianco Polar interior, this next Lambo in stands in full contrast to the blacked-out Diablo above. The joy of operating its big V10 is mediated by a six-speed E-Gear transaxle with paddle shifters, and power is put to the ground through a Viscous Traction AWD system with limited-slip differentials at both ends. The front axle lift keeps its icy freshness unmarred by parking blocks and curb cuts.

11k-Mile 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

This SLS AMG was made in 2012, before the go-fast boys in Affalterbach scraped Otto Benz’s name off the door. Nothing against AMG, of course, for their SLS is brilliant—a gullwing brute that takes just 3.5 seconds to sprint to 60 mph despite weighing nearly two tons. This particular car is finished in Iridium Silver Metallic over Exclusive Red leather, shows 11k miles, and recently received a B service.

15k-Mile 2001 BMW Z8

For those who prefer en plein air driving, the BMW Z8 offers both art and exhilaration. Henrik Fisker’s tribute to the 507 remains one of the most successful neo-retro designs from the late 1990s and early aughts, and the ripping S62 V8 is still a formidable unit nearly 25 years later. The example featured in the Legends Collection is finished in a classic scheme of Titanium Silver Metallic over black Nappa leather, and has just 15k miles on the clock.

7k-Mile 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

It’s back to black with the final offering in Legends 3: a 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo showing just 7k miles. The original owner of this car retrieved it via the Tourist Delivery program, and optioned it well by selecting heated seats with lumbar support, a motorized sunroof, and most importantly, a limited-slip differential.

The full list of vehicles in this edition of the Legends Collection is below, and links to live auctions will be added as they become available.

Video Inspiration: Concerto for V12 in Zandvoort, by Colombo: A Practical Look

Our newest treasure trove of onboard clips comes from Robbert Alblas, who for the last three years has been filling up his YouTube channel with rich cinematic footage taken from behind the wheel of various historic racers. This week we’re highlighting a video featuring a faithfully recreated Ferrari 250 GTO ripping through an old layout of the Zandvoort circuit with Dutch racing legend Nicky Pastorelli at the helm. This particular car was built over several years by Ferrari specialists Roelofs Engineering using a mix of original factory components and custom parts. And while not one of the original cars produced in the early ’60s, it’s a 250 GTO in every other way.

The Swig Family Collection, Presented by Fantasy Junction—All Cars Are Live!

8/18 Update: the final three cars from the Swig Collection are now live! Check them out below.
Our very own Howard Swig grew up in a family famous for automotive enthusiasm, and in his 10+ years at BaT he has been instrumental in building this site into what it has become today. His late father Martin was the San Francisco franchise dealer for at least 17 different marques, keeping up a vast inventory of interesting vehicles with a heavy focus on imports like Alfas, Datsuns, Saabs, Toyotas, Mercedes trucks, Sterlings, and more. He later went on to found the California Mille, inspired by his participation in the 1982 Mille Miglia Storica as the sole American entrant. His acquisitions of several interesting racing and sports cars formed the backbone of a collection that continues to be kept and enjoyed by the rest of the Swig family. Today, we’re excited to announce that six cars from the Swig Family Collection will be represented here by @FantasyJunction, out of Emeryville, California, and many will be offered with no reserve.
