“I owned an ‘85 nearly identical to this. I drove it the way Carroll Shelby intended. I quickly installed the Mopar Performance logic module and after getting the timing dialed in and an AutoMeter boost gauge installed, I was even more ready to “Go Like Hell.” So, one Friday evening in the spring, I was laying down rubber in first and second gear at each stop.

“Automatics are great – First, generally driven less spiritedly over their lifetime. Second, the automatic is actually very good. My auto on back roads, 2nd gear could go from about 25 mph to 70 mph. Often with a group of other 02s, I would be pushing the car in front of me that was modified. Third, the auto works while you find that 5 speed that is wider than a 4 speed and what else is wider? The tunnel in an automatic. No hammer needed for installation.

A true MC850 will have 4 bolt wheels and hubs with a different front brake caliper. I put on adjustable Spax shocks but the original Koni shocks come with it. “As a Kia enthusiast (yes, we exist), this is the holy grail. The looks you’d get for telling people what this is make it worth any expense. I’d rather have one of these over the Lotus version, just for that novelty. The stock drivetrain isn’t bad at all, but I can’t help but wonder how one of these would do with a modern Gamma 1.6 or 1.6T swap from Hyundai. In a way you’d keep it “in the family” but really liven it up. I don’t think there’s as many purists out there for the Kia version anyway.…”

One thing you used to see in ads for used buses was “Never a Greyhound,” meant to say it was never thrashed in daily Dog service and probably wouldn’t have chicken bones shoved into all the heater outlets. R-Code 427 4 speed when I returned from Vietnam in `67.
Paid $1700, 59 years ago, when these were just very nice “Used Cars”.
