145 Killed in First Three Days of New Year Holidays in Thailand

BANGKOK, Jan 2 – The death toll from road accidents during the so-called “seven dangerous days” of the New Year holiday period has climbed sharply, with 145 fatalities and 769 injuries reported in the first three days alone. Authorities announced the grim statistics on Friday, revealing Bangkok as the deadliest province and Phuket as the accident hotspot.

Jirapong Thepphitak, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport, presented the latest figures from the Road Safety Directing Centre. He reported that on New Year’s Day, January 1, a single day saw 54 lives lost and 317 injured across 26 accidents nationwide. Speeding remained the leading cause, responsible for 40.18% of the crashes, followed closely by drunk driving at 29.45%. Motorcycles were involved in a staggering 76.92% of all incidents.

“The most dangerous time period was between 12:01 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., accounting for 25.15% of the accidents,” Mr. Jirapong stated. “The highest number of casualties were among people between the ages of 20 and 29.” Most accidents occurred on straight roads, with highways and local village roads being the most common sites.

Cumulatively, from December 29 to January 1, the country recorded 798 accidents. While Phuket led with the highest number of total accidents (34) and injuries (38), the capital city of Bangkok suffered the highest death toll with 12 fatalities.

New Year 2026 Road Safety Campaign Launched Nationwide

With a massive influx of over 700,000 vehicles expected to return to Bangkok and other provinces over the weekend, authorities are bracing for further challenges. Saharat Wongsakulwiwat, deputy director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, warned that traffic is anticipated to peak on Sunday. In response, safety measures have been intensified, including the establishment of additional checkpoints, service stations, and special traffic lanes to manage congestion. Local authorities have been ordered to tighten community checkpoints and rigorously enforce drunk driving laws.

The dangers were starkly illustrated in Phuket province, where at the Tom Yum Goong intersection in Karon, a six-wheel truck lost control while descending a hill. The vehicle skidded, crashed into a parked car, and then plunged onto the road shoulder, resulting in one injury. The incident underscores the ongoing risks on the roads as the holiday travel period continues.

    The Pakistan Peoples Party has accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz of electoral irregularities during the Azad Kashmir elections. She said the PPP had avoided politicising incidents involving collapsed roofs in Punjab. However, she called for stronger measures to protect women and children. Faruqui also raised concerns about crime and law enforcement in Punjab. She referred to an alleged incident involving a girl with a mental disability in Lahore and criticised the police response. She further alleged that the Crime Control Department had carried out hundreds of encounters. According to her, the department had conducted around 670 encounters. Faruqui questioned whether the government was giving sufficient importance to courts and due process. She also claimed that a large majority of reported child abuse cases had occurred in Punjab. The PPP leader questioned the effectiveness of governance in cities where children and vulnerable citizens do not feel safe. Another PPP leader, Shahla Raza, also accused the PML-N of manipulating the Azad Kashmir election process. Raza claimed that the PML-N had entered the elections expecting to secure around 12 seats. She alleged that irregularities were reported in several constituencies because the party feared an outcome similar to the political situation in Gilgit-Baltistan. Raza said the alleged incidents demonstrated serious concerns about the credibility of the electoral process. She claimed that the Election Commission had received 26 complaints before 1pm on election day. She also alleged that election-related material was taken from police personnel and that gunfire occurred during the incidents. Raza further claimed that a PPP member of the National Assembly was shot. The PPP leaders called for greater transparency in the electoral process. They also urged authorities to investigate complaints submitted during polling. PPP leader Palwasha Khan said her party remains an ally of the PML-N at the federal level. However, she stressed that the PPP would not remain silent if it believed that the government was taking an incorrect step. Khan said the president has constitutional powers regarding official summaries and can act according to the law. She made it clear that the PPP considers itself a political partner rather than a subordinate of the PML-N. She warned that the government could face difficulties in achieving its political objectives if it ignored concerns raised by its allies. The allegations have added to political tensions surrounding the Azad Kashmir elections. The PPP and PML-N are coalition partners at the federal level. However, differences between the two parties have emerged over the election process and political developments in Azad Kashmir. The allegations made by PPP leaders have not, by themselves, established that electoral fraud occurred. The claims are expected to be examined by the relevant electoral and legal authorities.

    Petrol, diesel prices may fall further

    Petroleum product prices in Pakistan may see another reduction from August 5, offering potential relief to consumers already facing high fuel costs. According to sources within the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of petrol could decrease by Rs3.39 per litre, while high-speed diesel may become cheaper by Rs4.07 per litre. The latest calculations suggest that the price of petrol could fall to approximately Rs328.56 per litre after the proposed reduction. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel may come down to an estimated Rs385.86 per litre. OGRA sources said the initial working for the possible price adjustment has been completed. The final decision, however, will depend on the government’s review of the latest calculations and other relevant factors before announcing the new prices. The possible reduction comes shortly after the government announced a cut in petroleum prices. In the previous adjustment, the government reduced the price of petrol by Rs4.08 per litre, while the price of diesel fell by Rs2.45 per litre. If the latest proposed cuts receive approval, consumers could see another decline in fuel prices within a short period. A reduction in petrol prices would directly benefit motorists and households that rely on private vehicles for daily commuting. Lower diesel prices could also provide some relief to the transport sector, as diesel powers a large number of commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy transport used to move people and goods across the country. A decline in fuel prices may also help reduce pressure on transportation and logistics costs. Since diesel plays a major role in the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods and essential commodities, any reduction in its price could potentially ease some of the cost burden on businesses and consumers. However, the impact of the proposed reduction on overall inflation will depend on several factors, including transportation costs, exchange rate movements and international oil prices. The government is expected to announce the final petroleum prices after completing its review and approving the new rates.
