Three Dead, Dozens Infected After Eating Raw Pork Dishes in Thailand

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Disease Control Department has issued an urgent warning to consumers against eating raw or undercooked pork following an outbreak of Streptococcus suis (S. suis) infection that has claimed three lives and infected dozens across the country.

Udon Thani Man Vows to End Dog Meat Consumption After Raw Meat Incident Sparks Outrage

The department reported that as of February 10 this year, 49 people aged between 5 and 90 across 28 provinces have been infected with the dangerous bacterial disease. Of those infected, three have died from complications related to the infection.

Source of Infection

According to health officials, all of the infected individuals are believed to have consumed traditional dishes containing raw pork or pig’s blood, including popular Northeastern Thai specialties such as “koi,” “loo,” or “larb dip.” These dishes, which are often consumed with alcohol in social settings, carry significant risk when prepared with undercooked or raw ingredients.

The department specifically advised consumers not to eat raw or undercooked pork or pork products from animals that died of S. suis infection, emphasizing that proper cooking is the only reliable method to kill the bacteria.

High-Risk Provinces

Most cases were reported in Nakhon Ratchasima, Phrae, Chon Buri, Chaiyaphom, and Surin provinces, where the consumption of raw or undercooked pork with liquor is a common cultural practice. These areas have seen repeated outbreaks of the disease over the years, prompting ongoing public health campaigns to change eating behaviors.

At-Risk Populations

The Disease Control Department noted that certain groups face higher risk of contracting the bacterial infection. These include people who are in regular contact with pigs, such as farmers and slaughterhouse workers, as well as pork vendors who may handle raw meat regularly. Additionally, individuals suffering from chronic conditions including cancer, diabetes, or kidney disease are more susceptible to severe infection due to compromised immune systems.

Symptoms and Complications

Streptococcus suis infection can cause severe symptoms including high fever, headache, hearing loss, and in severe cases, meningitis and septicemia. Hearing loss can be permanent, and the infection can prove fatal without prompt medical treatment.

Preventive Measures

Health officials strongly recommend cooking pork thoroughly until well-done, with no pink remaining in the meat. They advise against tasting raw pork during cooking and urge consumers to purchase pork only from reliable sources with proper sanitary standards. People handling pork should wear gloves and wash hands thoroughly after contact with raw meat.

The department also recommends that individuals with open wounds avoid direct contact with pigs or raw pork products, as the bacteria can enter through broken skin.

Ongoing Monitoring

Public health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have intensified efforts to educate communities in high-risk areas about the dangers of consuming raw pork. Local health offices have been instructed to coordinate with village health volunteers to spread awareness and encourage prompt medical attention for anyone showing symptoms after consuming pork products.

The outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the serious health risks associated with traditional raw food consumption, even as Thai cuisine continues to gain international popularity for its bold flavors and unique preparations.

Kamal: Karachi deserves Rs800bn NFC share

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has said that he entered politics as an IT minister 23 years ago and became Karachi’s mayor 21 years ago, claiming that he played a role in ending the politics of violence in the city. Speaking in Karachi, Kamal said he had spoken out against a system in which people could be killed simply for expressing disagreement. He said Karachi’s political and administrative problems could not be resolved without addressing the structural issues facing the city. Kamal claimed that Karachi had not been properly counted in the population census. He said the city’s share under the National Finance Commission (NFC) award would amount to around Rs800 billion this year. He argued that the existing system was damaging not only Karachi but the entire country. According to him, the city continues to face serious problems despite massive spending and a lack of effective administrative arrangements. The federal minister said drinking water was not reaching many parts of Karachi, while the city’s sewage system was also unable to properly dispose of wastewater. He said there was no effective mechanism to transfer sufficient powers and resources to the grassroots level. Kamal further claimed that despite around Rs22,000 billion being spent in the city, Karachi had reached the third position on a global list of cities with poor living conditions. He stressed that the city needed stronger local governance, adequate resources and greater administrative powers at the grassroots level to address its longstanding problems. Commenting on the political debate over administrative units, Kamal said that if the old Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were still in its previous form, the responsibility for incidents such as the Gul Plaza tragedy would have been placed on the party. He said he had advocated the creation of an administrative unit for better governance and claimed that the proposal was now receiving support from different quarters. Kamal added that under the old political environment, such a proposal would have been dismissed as a foreign conspiracy. He maintained that Karachi’s governance problems required practical administrative reforms rather than political accusations.

Houthis claim two hypersonic missiles fired at Mok…

SANAA: Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed it launched two hypersonic ballistic missiles towards the strategically important Mokha port on the Red Sea coast, adding to growing security concerns around one of the world’s busiest maritime routes. According to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, the Yemeni military said the two missiles were fired towards Mokha port and the surrounding Red Sea area. However, there was no immediate independent confirmation of whether the missiles reached their intended targets or were intercepted before impact. No casualties or material damage were immediately reported following the alleged missile launches. Mokha, located on Yemen’s western coastline, is an important port area overlooking the Red Sea. The region has remained highly sensitive amid continuing tensions and repeated missile and drone attacks linked to the wider Middle East conflict. The latest claim is likely to raise fresh concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea, where attacks on commercial shipping have previously disrupted international trade and forced some vessels to consider longer alternative routes. The Houthis have repeatedly used missiles and drones in attacks around the Red Sea, saying their operations are connected to the broader regional conflict. Such incidents have drawn international attention because the waterway is a major passage for cargo and energy shipments between Asia, Europe and other global markets. For now, key details surrounding Monday’s alleged attack remain unclear, including the exact type of missiles used, their intended targets and whether any interception took place. The Houthi claim has not been independently verified, and further information from Yemeni authorities or other sources is expected to clarify what happened. With tensions already high across the region, the reported launch underscores the continuing risks facing ports and shipping lanes along the Red Sea.

Why was Imran Khan taken to Pims, not Shifa hospit…

Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has issued a statement regarding the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail for medical examination. Tarar said Imran was taken to hospital between the night of August 20 and 21 under strict security arrangements. According to the minister, Imran was examined by qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician. The doctors declared him medically fit, he said. Tarar clarified that the medical examination was conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present. He said Imran was initially scheduled to be taken to Shifa International Hospital. However, PTI workers allegedly created a security situation outside the hospital and along the route, prompting authorities to take him to Pims instead. The minister said the medical examination at Pims found Imran to be in good health. Tarar added that Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan, remained present throughout the medical examination and treatment process. Imran Khan returns to Adiala Jail After completing the medical examination, Imran was shifted back to Adiala Jail at around 5am on August 21, Tarar said. The minister maintained that medical facilities had previously been provided to Imran whenever required and that the government would continue to ensure necessary healthcare in the future. Jail sources also confirmed that Imran had been taken back to Adiala Jail. According to the sources, he was transported from the hospital to the prison under extremely tight security.

SC to hear Imran access pleas on August 18

The Supreme Court has scheduled five petitions concerning access to jailed former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan for hearing on August 18. A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed will hear the petitions. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim are also part of the bench. The cases were previously being heard by a bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar. The bench has now been reconstituted after Justice Mazhar became unavailable at the Supreme Court’s principal seat. The petitions seek permission for Imran Khan’s family members, personal doctors and legal team to meet him in prison. The applicants have also requested access to his medical records and proper arrangements for his medical treatment. The petitions gained renewed attention after PTI lawyers and lawmakers gathered outside the Supreme Court earlier this week, protesting over the continued delay in fixing the cases. A delegation led by PTI lawyer Salman Akram Raja subsequently met the apex court registrar. According to Insaf Lawyers Forum chief organiser Intezar Panjutha, the registrar assured the delegation that five petitions relating to restrictions on meetings with Imran would be listed for hearing. The cause list was expected to be issued ahead of the proceedings. One of the petitions was filed by Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan. She has sought his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, arguing that he requires proper treatment and continuous medical monitoring for an eye-related condition and other health complications. The Supreme Court had earlier directed that details of meetings held by Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, with family members, lawyers and party leaders in prison be submitted. The newly constituted bench has attracted attention because of the legal positions previously taken by its members in politically sensitive matters. Justice Afghan has been associated with dissenting opinions on several major constitutional and legal issues. He had opposed the constitutionality of trying civilians in military courts and had also dissented in a case involving the transfer of judges between high courts. He has previously granted post-arrest bail to PTI leaders facing cases related to the May 9 violence. Justice Ibrahim was part of a Supreme Court judgment that overturned an earlier order concerning Imran’s right to defend himself in a defamation case filed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court is separately hearing petitions concerning the alleged solitary confinement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The dispute over access to Imran has remained a major issue for the PTI, which maintains that his family, lawyers and doctors should be allowed regular meetings. The government has continued to face pressure over the prison arrangements surrounding the former prime minister.
