Rain emergency declared in Rawalpindi and Islamaba…

RAWALPINDI: A rain emergency has been declared in Rawalpindi and Islamabad after heavy rainfall hit the twin cities.

The authorities have stepped up preparations to deal with any possible emergency. Teams and heavy machinery have been deployed in several low-lying areas.

According to the Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), water levels in Nullah Lai have increased following the rainfall.

The water flow at Kattarian has reached 10.5 feet. At Gawalmandi, the level has been recorded at 8.5 feet.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation along Nullah Lai. Emergency teams have been placed on alert to respond quickly if water levels rise further.

Shamsabad recorded the highest rainfall in Rawalpindi. Around 116 millimetres of rain was recorded in the area.

The heavy downpour has raised concerns about urban flooding in vulnerable parts of the city. WASA staff have been deployed in low-lying areas to manage the situation.

Heavy machinery has also been positioned at several key locations. These include Liaquat Bagh, the Committee Chowk Underpass and low-lying areas along Murree Road.

Equipment has also been deployed in Dhok Khaba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad.

Officials said the deployment of machinery would help clear rainwater and keep important roads accessible. Emergency personnel are also monitoring areas that are vulnerable to water accumulation.

The authorities have urged relevant departments to remain alert as further rainfall could increase pressure on the city’s drainage system.

WASA teams are continuing to monitor Nullah Lai and other vulnerable points. Officials said immediate action would be taken if water levels rise or flooding occurs.

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari has strongly rejected the election results, declaring that his party will not accept what he described as a flawed and manipulated electoral process. Addressing a press conference in Muzaffarabad, Bukhari alleged that the elections were marred by widespread irregularities, voter manipulation, and violence, making them neither free nor fair. Bukhari claimed that the PPP possesses evidence of electoral misconduct. According to him, ballot papers were allegedly distributed among supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and party workers were seen providing ballot papers outside polling stations. He argued that such practices seriously undermined the credibility of the electoral process and violated the principles of transparent and democratic elections. Speaking to journalists, Bukhari questioned the fairness of the election, stating that a truly transparent election should allow voters to cast their ballots freely without interference or manipulation. He accused the authorities and political rivals of attempting to ensure victory for their preferred candidates through unfair means. As a result, he emphasized that the PPP does not recognize these elections as free and fair and therefore refuses to accept the announced results. Describing the elections as fraudulent and heavily rigged, Bukhari argued that the overall electoral environment was neither peaceful nor impartial. He maintained that the democratic rights of voters had been compromised and that the results failed to reflect the genuine will of the people. He stressed that elections conducted under such circumstances cannot earn public confidence or democratic legitimacy. Concluding his remarks, Bukhari stated that governments established through coercion and manipulation cannot gain lasting public acceptance. He reaffirmed that the PPP respects the will of the people and believes that democratic principles must always be upheld. However, he alleged that the public mandate, particularly in the Mirpur Division, had not been respected. According to Bukhari, the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected the PML-N, and the election results did not accurately represent the voters’ true choice.

Sources said the private Hajj scheme will be operated through the ministry’s official Pak Hajj app, which will serve as the digital platform for managing bookings and related arrangements. The move is aimed at bringing greater transparency, centralised oversight and digital management to the private Hajj scheme. It will also align Pakistan’s private Hajj operations with the digital procedures being implemented by Saudi authorities. Under the proposed system, pilgrims seeking to perform Hajj through the private scheme will be able to access the relevant services through the official digital platform, while the ministry will maintain direct oversight of the process. The decision marks a significant change from the existing arrangement, under which private Hajj operators play a central role in booking and managing pilgrims. The ministry is expected to announce further details regarding registration, booking procedures, packages, payments and the role of private operators as preparations for Hajj 2027 progress.
