Tom Holland aims to do all his own dancing in Fred…

Tom Holland is preparing for one of the most demanding roles of his career as he gets ready to portray legendary dancer and actor Fred Astaire in an upcoming biographical film. The Spider-Man star recently revealed that he has already returned to the dance studio and is undergoing intensive training to ensure he can perform every dance sequence himself. His goal is not only to honor Astaire’s extraordinary legacy but also to recreate the magic of his performances with complete authenticity.

Speaking during recent television interviews, Holland admitted that stepping into Astaire’s shoes is both thrilling and intimidating. He described his early rehearsals as filling him with “excitement and absolute dread,” acknowledging the immense challenge that comes with portraying one of Hollywood’s greatest dancers. Rather than relying on stunt doubles, Holland said he hopes to perform all of the dance routines himself and even film many of them in uninterrupted long takes—the same style that made Fred Astaire’s performances so iconic.

For Holland, the project is especially meaningful because it reconnects him with his roots. Before becoming an international film star, he trained extensively in dance and rose to fame as the lead in London’s West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical. However, after leaving the stage to focus on acting, he stepped away from professional dance training. The actor has now admitted that quitting dance was one of his biggest career regrets, making this film the perfect opportunity to rediscover a skill that first launched his career.

The untitled Fred Astaire biopic will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul King, known for the Paddington films, with a screenplay by Steven Levenson. Although the project was first announced several years ago, production is now expected to begin in January 2027 after Holland completes promotional commitments for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and other upcoming releases.

Holland has described the role as the beginning of a new chapter in his acting career. At 30, he believes it is time to move beyond youthful characters and embrace more challenging performances that test his abilities. Playing Fred Astaire, whose elegance, precision, and effortless style influenced generations of performers, represents exactly the kind of challenge he has been searching for.

Fans have praised Holland’s commitment to authenticity, noting that his background in dance gives him a unique advantage in bringing Astaire to life. If he succeeds in performing every routine without doubles, the film could become one of the most technically impressive dance biopics in recent years.

As rehearsals continue, anticipation for the film is steadily growing. With months of intensive preparation ahead, Tom Holland appears determined to deliver a performance worthy of Fred Astaire’s remarkable legacy. His dedication, discipline, and passion for dance suggest audiences may soon witness one of the most ambitious performances of his career.

    Audit reveals Rs47bn electricity overbilling

A government audit has uncovered an alleged Rs47 billion electricity overbilling scandal, raising serious concerns over billing practices by power distribution companies (DISCOs). The findings were presented before a subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where officials said inflated electricity bills were issued to hundreds of thousands of consumers. Audit officials informed the committee that 278,649 consumers received excessive electricity bills in a single month. According to the findings, the overbilling involved nearly 904 million electricity units, creating a major financial burden for households and businesses across the country. The audit report stated that the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) accounted for the largest share of the overbilling, with consumers allegedly charged around Rs45 billion beyond actual consumption. The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) was identified as the second-largest contributor, with overbilling estimated at Rs1.56 billion. Officials told lawmakers that the inflated bills were mainly caused by incorrect meter readings and misuse of authority by field staff responsible for recording electricity consumption. They alleged that overbilling was used to hide electricity theft, transmission losses and inefficiencies within the distribution system. Consumers who regularly paid their bills were reportedly charged extra, while refunds were usually made only after formal complaints were submitted. The Power Division informed the committee that reforms are being introduced to improve the billing system. Smart electricity meters and transformer-based metering technology are being installed in different regions to reduce human error and improve transparency. Officials said these measures have already helped reduce complaints of overbilling in areas where the new system has been implemented. Members of the Public Accounts Committee expressed concern over the scale of the issue and questioned how many similar cases had gone unnoticed. They said the reported figures likely represent only the cases detected through audits, while many more consumers may have suffered from incorrect billing without being aware of it. Lawmakers highlighted the financial difficulties faced by ordinary citizens because of inflated electricity bills. They said many families had been forced to borrow money or sell personal belongings to pay their electricity charges, adding that such practices have increased public frustration over rising utility costs. The committee was also informed that disciplinary action had been taken against officials found responsible for irregularities. According to the management of LESCO, stronger anti-theft operations and stricter monitoring have significantly reduced electricity theft and eliminated overbilling in its service area. Several officers, including an executive engineer and multiple sub-divisional officers, have been dismissed over misconduct. During the same meeting, another audit report highlighted alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO). The report claimed that Rs1.06 billion was misappropriated through payments made to ghost employees and retired staff, with investigators pointing to possible collusion among officials involved in financial administration.

Weekly inflation rises 0.15% in second week of August

ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation increased by 0.15% during the second week of August 2026, pushing the year-on-year inflation rate to 9.11%, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks changes in the prices of essential consumer goods, showed a mixed trend during the week. Prices of several food and household items increased, while consumers received some relief from lower prices of petroleum products and selected food commodities. According to the PBS report, prices of 20 out of 51 essential commodities increased during the week under review, while prices of nine items declined. The prices of the remaining 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion prices surge sharply Among the major price increases, onions recorded the most significant weekly jump, becoming 24.68% more expensive compared with the previous week. The increase is likely to add further pressure on household food budgets, particularly for low-income consumers who are more exposed to fluctuations in basic food prices. The price of gram pulse increased by 3.35%, while chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. LPG prices also edged up by 0.67%. Other commodities that recorded weekly price increases included tea, mustard oil, yoghurt and masoor pulse, adding to the overall upward movement in the weekly inflation indicator. Petroleum prices provide some relief The weekly inflation reading was partly offset by declines in the prices of petroleum and several food items. Petrol prices decreased by 2.35% during the week, providing some relief to consumers and transport users. Tomato prices fell by 1.26%, while potatoes became 0.73% cheaper. Diesel prices also declined, though marginally, by 0.29%. Prices of bananas, moong pulse, eggs and sugar also recorded weekly decreases. Despite these reductions, the increase in the prices of several essential food items, particularly onions, pulses and chicken, kept overall weekly inflation in positive territory. Food prices remain major source of annual pressure The year-on-year comparison presents a more pronounced picture of price pressures in several essential commodities. Tomatoes recorded the largest annual increase, with prices rising by 143.77% compared with the same period last year. Onion prices were 125.75% higher, while wheat flour became 77.41% more expensive. LPG prices increased by 55.41% on an annual basis, while diesel recorded a 34.05% increase. Petrol prices were also 23.02% higher than a year earlier. The sharp annual increases in basic food items indicate that consumers continue to face significant pressure in meeting everyday household expenses, even though some commodities have become cheaper compared with last year. Several commodities become cheaper annually The annual data also showed declines in the prices of a number of commodities. Potato prices dropped by 30% compared with a year earlier, marking the largest annual decline among the commodities listed in the report. Sugar prices fell by 17.93%, while chicken became 17.45% cheaper on an annual basis. Gram pulse, eggs and moong pulse also recorded year-on-year declines. The contrasting movements highlight the uneven nature of inflation, with some essential commodities witnessing substantial annual increases while others have recorded notable reductions. The latest PBS figures suggest that although overall inflation remains elevated, price movements continue to vary considerably across different categories. Food, energy and other essential commodities remain key factors influencing household expenditure and the broader cost-of-living situation.

Biden’s cancer has spread and become very pa…

Former President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and has become very painful, his son Hunter Biden revealed in a new interview, offering the most detailed public update yet on the 83-year-old’s deteriorating health condition. Hunter Biden told the BBC’s Newsnight programme that his father’s cancer has metastasized into his bones and beyond, according to video footage of the interview posted online on Friday. He described the condition as very painful and debilitating in many respects, offering a stark assessment of how far the disease has progressed since it was first diagnosed. A spokesman for the former Democratic president declined to comment on Hunter Biden’s remarks when reached on Saturday, leaving the son’s account as the most recent and detailed public statement on the elder Biden’s health status. Diagnosis first revealed in 2025 Biden first disclosed his prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House. At the time, his office described the diagnosis as an aggressive form of the disease and confirmed that it had already spread to his bones, marking a serious health revelation that came just months after he left office following a single term as president. A spokesman for Biden said in October that the former president had begun undergoing radiation treatment alongside hormone therapy in an effort to manage the disease, representing the most recent official update on his treatment regimen prior to Hunter Biden’s latest comments. A presidency shaped by scrutiny over age and health Biden made history as the oldest person ever elected to the American presidency when he won the office in 2020. His physical health and mental acuity faced sustained public scrutiny throughout his presidency, which ran from 2021 to 2025, with questions about his fitness for office becoming a recurring theme during his time in the White House and throughout his time seeking reelection. Despite the health challenges that have emerged since leaving office, Biden has continued to make public appearances. He attended the dedication of former President Barack Obama’s presidential library in Chicago in June, marking one of his more notable public appearances since departing the presidency. Biden served as vice president under Obama from 2009 to 2017, a partnership that has continued to define much of his political legacy. Memoir set for November release Biden’s presidential memoir is scheduled for release on November 17, offering what is expected to be his own detailed account of his one term in office. The timing of the book’s release means it will arrive as public attention remains focused on his health, with Hunter Biden’s latest comments likely to intensify interest in how the former president addresses his cancer diagnosis and its impact on his post-presidency in his own written account. The revelation adds to a year marked by significant health developments for the former president, whose battle with an aggressive and now advancing form of cancer has become an increasingly prominent part of his public story since leaving the White House.

American tourist killed by lightning strike on Mount Etna

An American tourist has died after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna in Sicily. Italian firefighters confirmed the incident on Monday, adding new details to the tragedy. The victim, a 29-year-old man from Kansas, was struck on Sunday evening while hiking through an exposed section of the volcano above the tree line. Mount Etna is widely known as Europe’s most active volcano. Emergency crews responded quickly, rescuing the tourist by helicopter following the lightning strike. Despite the swift response, he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity publicly. The area where the incident occurred had reportedly been closed to visitors due to recent volcanic activity. Officials have restricted access to large sections of the volcano’s slopes following an extended period of heightened activity in recent weeks. That same volcanic activity had already caused significant disruption in the region. Catania airport, one of Sicily’s key international travel hubs, was forced to shut down for much of the previous week because of ongoing eruptions. Despite Mount Etna’s frequent volcanic activity, officials noted something notable about the risks the mountain actually poses. Lightning strikes have caused more fatalities on the volcano in recent decades than the eruptions themselves. According to officials, the most recent deaths directly linked to a Mount Etna eruption date back to 1987. That statistic highlights how unpredictable weather, rather than volcanic danger, remains the more immediate threat to hikers today. Mount Etna sits on the eastern side of Sicily, near the city of Catania. Despite ongoing volcanic activity and periodic access restrictions, it continues to draw large numbers of hikers and tourists throughout the year. Sunday’s tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable risks tied to hiking in exposed, high-altitude terrain, even in areas officially closed to the public. Authorities are expected to review safety measures and access restrictions around the volcano following the incident.

Gohar says meeting PTI founder key to political im…

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said that a meeting with the party’s founder is essential for improving the current political situation. Speaking to reporters near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Gohar said political tensions could not be reduced through the registration of cases and continued confrontation. He was responding to questions about a case registered against Noreen Bibi. Gohar said statements made by Noreen Niazi should be viewed as her personal opinion. He added that she had already clarified her position. He also stressed the importance of Kashmir for Pakistan, saying the region held a special place in the country’s national interest. The PTI chairman criticised the political approach of the country’s two major parties. He said their political activities had contributed to the current situation. Gohar also defended PTI’s decision to boycott the recent Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections. He said the party had called for a better political environment before participating in the electoral process. He stressed that free and fair elections were necessary for Pakistan to move forward. According to him, political parties should avoid unnecessary point-scoring at a time when the country needs stability. Gohar also made PTI’s position on terrorism clear. He said the party would not support the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan under any circumstances. He described TTP members as terrorists and said action against terrorism was necessary. At the same time, Gohar said peaceful political protests should be handled differently. He emphasised that peaceful demonstrations should not be treated in the same manner as acts of terrorism or violence. He said PTI would also hold discussions with Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai. He expressed hope that allied political parties would stand together on August 5. Speaking about national security, Gohar referred to the recent conflict with India. He described Pakistan’s response as a matter of national pride and said the country would respond strongly if India attempted similar action in the future. Gohar also commented on Aleema Khan’s political activities. He said PTI’s important members of the National and Provincial Assemblies were supporting her. He again defended the party’s boycott of the AJK elections. Gohar claimed that voter turnout remained very low, estimating it at around 5 to 7 per cent. He said PTI had decided not to support demands that it considered against the state or the Kashmir cause. He maintained that the election boycott was a carefully considered political decision. Gohar said the current situation required politicians to listen to the people instead of focusing solely on political competition. He stressed that public concerns should remain at the centre of political decision-making.
