Thailand’s Current Oil Reserves Will Last 61 Days, Energy Ministry Confirms

BANGKOK — Thailand currently holds oil reserves sufficient to meet domestic demand for 61 days, according to an announcement from the Energy Ministry on Sunday, as officials closely monitor the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on global energy supplies, Thai PBS reported.

Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, deputy permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, reported that Thailand has reserves of 4.925 billion litres of crude oil and finished oil products available within the country, which can meet domestic demand for 38 days under normal consumption patterns.

In addition to these on-hand reserves, the ministry confirmed that another 1.746 billion litres of crude oil are currently aboard tankers that have already passed through the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to Thailand. A further 1.124 billion litres of crude from other sources are also in transit, bringing the total strategic reserves to 6.795 billion litres — sufficient to meet domestic demand for 61 days.

LNG Shipments En Route

Regarding natural gas supplies, Veerapat stated that liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for March are aboard four tankers heading toward Thailand. Two of these vessels have already successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow and strategically vital waterway between Iran and the United Arab Emirates that has become a focal point of concern as regional tensions escalate.

Strait of Hormuz Concerns

The deputy permanent secretary acknowledged that the ongoing war in the Middle East could potentially tempt Iran to attempt blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a scenario that would have immediate and severe consequences for global oil and gas prices. The strait is a critical chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption passes, making any disruption a matter of global economic concern.

Monitoring and Mitigation

Veerapat confirmed that the Energy Ministry is monitoring the situation in Iran closely and has already implemented preemptive measures to mitigate the impact should Iran take action affecting the strait. These measures are designed to ensure continued energy security for Thailand despite potential disruptions to global supply chains.

    PM takes notice of lawmakers’ absenteeism

    ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the low attendance of lawmakers during parliamentary sessions. Speaking to the media outside the National Assembly on Tuesday, Sadiq said some federal ministers had raised the issue of members’ absence with the prime minister. He said the government and lawmakers were now paying attention to improving attendance. The speaker’s comments came after a session of the National Assembly witnessed a low presence of members, with a large number of seats remaining vacant during proceedings. Sadiq said maintaining the required quorum was not solely the responsibility of the speaker. He said both the government and opposition benches had a duty to ensure that their members attended parliamentary proceedings. He expressed hope that attendance would improve when the next session is held, which is expected to take place later this week. According to the speaker, the government had conveyed that it recognised the seriousness of the issue and intended to improve lawmakers’ presence in future sessions. Sadiq urged members from both sides of the House to remain present during proceedings. He said parliamentary sessions provided limited time for debate, questions, discussions and legislation, and lawmakers should make full use of the opportunity. He noted that poor attendance affected both sides of the House. The government could not properly complete its legislative agenda, while opposition members also lost the opportunity to raise issues and scrutinise government policies. The speaker also commented on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s intention to adopt a more active approach towards legislation. Sadiq welcomed the move, saying stronger opposition participation could improve parliamentary accountability. He said constructive pressure from opposition parties could also encourage the government to introduce reforms. Regarding resignations submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members from standing committees, the speaker said he had not accepted any of the resignations. He said parliamentary committees were continuing to function and could perform more effectively if opposition members regularly participated in their meetings. Asked about the possibility of the united opposition moving a no-confidence motion against him or Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Sadiq said it was a constitutional and democratic right of the opposition. He said the National Assembly would facilitate the opposition if it decided to exercise that right. Sadiq also spoke about efforts to reduce political tensions between the government and opposition. He said several attempts had been made to bring the two sides to the negotiating table. He said he, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the law minister and Rana Sanaullah had repeatedly offered dialogue.

The committee will also record statements from members of the medical board involved in the first post-mortem. Doctors and experts who conducted the first post-mortem are expected to be questioned. They may also be given a detailed questionnaire. Investigators will try to determine the evidence behind the first post-mortem findings. The report had stated that the bullet entered through the chest and exited through the back. The team will also examine how forensic evidence was documented and preserved during the initial investigation. The second post-mortem report gave a different assessment of the bullet’s direction. Investigators will therefore compare both reports in detail. They will also examine the injuries, clothing and other forensic material. Meanwhile, investigators have obtained details about Mir Raza Ali’s movements on the night of July 28. Details of his final phone calls and messages have also been collected. According to the investigation, Mir Raza spoke to two people through three phone calls that night. He reportedly spoke to a person named Ali at 2:13am and again at 2:16am. His final call was answered by his friend Abdullah. The two spoke for more than three minutes.
