Bougainvillea trees bring colour to Soi 112

Hua Hin City Municipality has started planting 10,000 bougainvillea trees along Soi 112 as part of a project to add more colour to one of the city’s key routes.

The planting is taking place on the central reservation of the road in Ban Hua Na, covering a distance of about 1.5 kilometres.

On 27 May, Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul, Municipal Council Chairman Cheep Suksee, Municipal Clerk Jeerawat Pramanee, the director of the Engineering Division and municipal council members visited the site to take part in the planting.

The bougainvillea, also known locally as paper flowers, are expected to grow into flowering bushes in shades of purple, white and red. The municipality said the colours will complement the yellow flowers of the yellow trumpetbush trees already planted along both sides of the road.

Mr Nopporn said the Ban Hua Na section of Soi 112 is an important route linking Hua Hin with Thap Tai and onward travel towards Bangkok.

He said the combination of yellow trumpetbush and bougainvillea would help improve the appearance of the road and make it one of the more attractive routes in the city.

The municipality said the Soi 112 bougainvillea project is being treated as a pilot scheme. If the planting is successful and produces positive results, similar landscaping may be introduced in communities across Hua Hin.

Bougainvillea has a long association with Hua Hin, according to the municipality.

The flowering plant was first introduced to the town during the time of Phuen Krasaesin, Hua Hin’s first mayor.

Officials said the latest planting is part of an attempt to use the flower more widely as a recognisable feature of the city’s public spaces.

Phetkasem Road could be considered in future

Mr Nopporn also discussed the possibility of extending similar planting to parts of Phetkasem Road.

The road is under the responsibility of the Department of Highways and already has a variety of plants along some sections.

The mayor said Hua Hin City Municipality may propose adding bougainvillea in selected areas to improve the road’s appearance and strengthen the city’s visual identity.

The proposal remains at the discussion stage and would require coordination with the relevant agencies.
