Infamous cartel kingpin Daniel Kinahan extradited to Ireland following decade-long global manhunt

Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been extradited from Dubai back to Ireland, marking the end of a ten-year stretch abroad that began after an armed assault on his life.

The 49-year-old landed at Casement Aerodrome in Dublin under tight security protocols, arriving on an official Irish government aircraft.

Kinahan is scheduled to present himself at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, where he will face charges of commanding an organised crime syndicate before being remanded to Portlaoise Prison.

Law enforcement agencies contend that Kinahan holds a high-ranking position within the Kinahan crime syndicate, an enterprise tied to global narcotics trafficking, illegal arms dealing, and further criminal operations.

Kinahan has not been convicted of these specific offences. Speaking on a podcast hosted by James English prior to his surrender, Kinahan voiced an expectation that he would face significant jail time.

‘I think I’ve already got life in prison. And we have to go through the dance now,’ he remarked.

Whilst conceding that he had ‘not been an angel’, Kinahan asserted that the claims made against him were exaggerated, adding: ‘I believe in a way I’m a scapegoat.’

His departure from Ireland occurred after a targeted assassination attempt at a boxing weigh-in inside Dublin’s Regency Hotel back in February 2016.

He subsequently established residency in Dubai, where local authorities apprehended him in April. The legal transfer was enabled after Ireland and the United Arab Emirates ratified an extradition agreement in May 2025.

Emirati courts dismissed Kinahan’s final legal challenge against the transfer last month, paving the way for his custody transfer to Irish officials.

Emi Martinez hints at Argentina retirement after World Cup final

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martinez has hinted that his international career could be nearing its end following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The 33-year-old shot-stopper shared an emotional message on social media after the loss, suggesting it may be time to consider stepping away from international football after years of success with La Albiceleste. “I dreamed we’d win it again. I dreamed of bringing the trophy back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram. The Aston Villa goalkeeper admitted the defeat was one of the most painful moments of his career, saying he had given everything to help Argentina defend the world title they won in Qatar in 2022. “The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside,” he said, adding, “I’m so sorry. I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates.” Martinez featured in all eight matches of Argentina’s World Cup campaign, keeping two clean sheets while conceding eight goals. Despite the final defeat, he was widely regarded as one of Argentina’s standout performers throughout the tournament. In the final against Spain, Martinez produced a series of crucial saves to keep his side in contention as Spain dominated large periods of the match. However, his resistance was finally broken in extra time when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s victory. Martinez has earned 67 international caps since making his Argentina debut and has played a central role in one of the country’s most successful eras. Alongside the 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, he helped Argentina win multiple major international titles and claimed the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper at the Qatar World Cup. The experienced goalkeeper has also been recognised at club level, winning the prestigious Yashin Trophy in both 2023 and 2024 as the world’s best goalkeeper. Although Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029, he has recently been linked with a potential move to Italian giants Juventus. His emotional message has sparked speculation over whether the World Cup final marked the end of an unforgettable chapter with Argentina, though no official retirement decision has yet been announced.

MICHIGAN: Five people were killed in a shooting in northern Michigan on Friday, while a suspected gunman was later found dead after police launched a manhunt, authorities said. Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched at around 11:40am to a home in Missaukee County following reports of gunfire. Officers arriving at the scene discovered three people dead and a fourth victim seriously wounded. The injured person was taken to hospital and remained in critical condition, police said. Investigators identified the suspected shooter as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, who allegedly fled the area before officers arrived. His disappearance triggered an extensive search across the surrounding area as law enforcement teams worked to locate him. During the manhunt, investigators discovered another deceased victim at a second residence, bringing the reported death toll to five. Police later found Hickman’s vehicle near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake. When officers searched the area, they found Hickman and another person dead, according to the state police statement. Police have withheld the names, ages and genders of the victims while officials work to notify their next of kin. The incident has left the northern Michigan community shaken as investigators continue examining the shooting, the second residence and the circumstances that led to the suspect’s death. Homenet Pakistan urges protection of democratic ma…

Lahore, July 2026: HomeNet Pakistan, in partnership with AwazCDS/PDA, organized a high-level policy dialogue with Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), including members of the Standing Committee on Local Government, to discuss legislative reforms aimed at promoting a stronger, more inclusive, and constitutionally compliant local government system in Punjab. The dialogue brought together parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and governance experts to exchange views on the future of local governance and explore ways to strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level. The session focused on ensuring political continuity, enhancing public participation, and improving the effectiveness of elected local governments.   Opening the event, Mr. Zia ur Rehman, Chief Executive of AwazCDS-Pakistan, highlighted the constitutional importance of Article 140A, which requires the devolution of political, administrative, and financial authority to elected local governments. He stressed that an effective local government system is essential for democratic governance and improved public service delivery. He urged the Punjab Assembly to introduce legal and institutional reforms that would safeguard democratic continuity, ensure the timely conduct of local government elections, and strengthen the autonomy of elected local bodies.   During the session, Ms. Ume Laila Azhar, Executive Director of HomeNet Pakistan, presented a set of policy recommendations designed to reinforce democratic governance at the local level. She emphasized the need for a stable and party-based electoral framework for local governments, noting that frequent legislative changes have weakened institutional continuity. She referred to the replacement of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 with the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 as an example of policy shifts that have contributed to delays in restoring elected local governments across the province. She called for legal safeguards to prevent repeated delimitations and unnecessary postponements of local government elections. HomeNet Pakistan also recommended a transparent and representative mechanism for filling reserved seats allocated to women, youth, minorities, workers, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. According to the organization, such measures would promote broader democratic participation and ensure that local governments better reflect the diversity of society.   In addition, the organization emphasized the importance of returning key municipal responsibilities—including water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and local infrastructure development—to elected local governments. It proposed that provincial and district administrations should primarily provide technical guidance and institutional support rather than directly managing these essential services. The dialogue was attended by Ms. Sumbal Malik Hussain, Ms. Fizzah Maimona Rao, Ms. Somia Atta, Ms. Rukhsana Kausar, Ms. Farzana Abbas, Ms. Nasreen Riaz, and Ms. Attia Hanif, alongside representatives from civil society organizations and governance experts. Responding to the recommendations, the participating MPAs appreciated the constructive engagement and acknowledged the importance of strengthening democratic local governance. They reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s commitment to transparency, institutional reforms, and democratic accountability, expressing confidence that these principles would continue to guide the ongoing local government reform process. The parliamentarians informed participants that the delimitation process had made substantial progress, with geographical boundaries largely finalized. They stated that the remaining objections were expected to be addressed by the end of July 2026. Following the completion of the statutory process, they expressed optimism that the election schedule would be announced, paving the way for timely local government elections. The MPAs also committed to sharing the recommendations emerging from the dialogue with the Honorable Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and pledged to advocate for legislative reforms that promote constitutional compliance, political continuity, and an empowered local government system capable of responding effectively to citizens’ needs. Concluding the event, HomeNet Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with parliamentarians, government institutions, and civil society partners to advance democratic governance, strengthen inclusive representation, and support the timely restoration of empowered elected local governments across Punjab.

Mir Raza’s father says new probe is moving in ri…

KARACHI: The father of young Karachi resident Mir Raza has expressed confidence in the newly formed investigation team. He said he felt, for the first time in 13 days, that the investigation was moving in the right direction. Mir Raza’s parents, lawyer Jibran Nasir and members of the new investigation team visited locations connected to the case. The visit was aimed at reviewing important points and gathering information that could help investigators understand what happened. Jibran Nasir said the family had identified several important locations on its own. These locations were later shown to the police. He said Mir Raza’s parents were cooperating fully with the investigators and answering their questions. Nasir said the investigation team was waiting for the results of samples collected during the post-mortem examination. He said additional samples obtained after the exhumation had also been sent to a forensic laboratory. The lawyer said the family now believed that an honest and serious officer was handling the investigation. He said the family had earlier faced difficulties in getting the matter investigated properly. Mir Raza’s father, Mir Hussain, said the family still wanted clear answers about his son’s death. He said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident had not yet been established. According to him, the initial investigation should have been more effective. He said timely and proper action at the beginning could have taken the case to a different stage. Mir Hussain said the new investigation team was listening to the family’s concerns. He said investigators were considering the information provided by the parents. The family, he added, now had greater confidence in the process. He said the main objective was to establish what happened to Mir Raza and how the incident took place. The family wanted every aspect of the case to be examined. Mir Hussain said Mir Raza’s kitchen was located around half a kilometre from the site of the incident. He also said information about three suspicious individuals had already been shared with the police. The victim’s father further alleged that the previous investigation team had not properly shared details of the inquiry with the family. He hoped the new team would maintain transparency and investigate the case from all possible angles. The family said it would continue cooperating with investigators. Mir Hussain said they would pursue the case as far as necessary to uncover the truth and obtain justice for Mir Raza. Investigators are now expected to examine forensic evidence, statements and other available information. The reports from the forensic laboratory could also play an important role in determining the circumstances surrounding the case.

The Odyssey crosses Rs. 183 crore, targets Rs. 200 crore in India

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues to perform steadily at the Indian box office, maintaining a solid hold even in its third week. The epic drama added an estimated Rs. 2.50 crore gross on its third Tuesday, taking its overall Indian box office collection to approximately Rs. 183 crore gross. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, the film has remained one of the strongest international performers in the Indian market this year. Despite entering its third week, the movie continues to attract audiences, particularly in premium cinema formats. Based on its current trend, The Odyssey is expected to conclude its third week with around Rs. 187 crore gross. It would then require only about Rs. 13 crore more to reach the coveted Rs. 200 crore mark, a milestone that industry estimates suggest could be achieved by the end of its fourth weekend. If the film continues to perform at its current pace, its lifetime theatrical run in India is projected to exceed Rs. 215 crore gross, making it one of Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing films in the country. One of the film’s biggest strengths has been its exceptional performance in IMAX theatres. A significant share of its total earnings has come from premium large-format screens, with IMAX collections alone reaching approximately Rs. 60 crore across just 36 screens. This achievement has made The Odyssey the highest-grossing IMAX release ever in India, highlighting the audience’s preference for experiencing Nolan’s visually ambitious storytelling on the biggest screens available. Christopher Nolan’s reputation has once again proven to be a major driving force behind the film’s commercial success. Over the years, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has built a loyal fan base in India, where each of his new releases generates substantial anticipation. His previous films have consistently performed well, and the renewed interest in his work, including the successful re-release of Interstellar, has further strengthened his box office appeal. Interestingly, The Odyssey belongs to a genre that has not traditionally been among the strongest performers in the Indian market. Despite that, Nolan’s storytelling, technical excellence, and large-scale cinematic presentation have helped the film overcome genre limitations and attract audiences across major cities. The film’s box office journey in India has remained consistent throughout its run. It earned Rs. 104.50 crore gross during its opening week, followed by Rs. 55.25 crore gross in the second week. In its third weekend, the movie collected Rs. 4 crore on Friday, Rs. 7 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 7.25 crore on Sunday. It then added an estimated Rs. 2.50 crore each on Monday and Tuesday, bringing the cumulative total to approximately Rs. 183 crore gross. With stable weekday collections and continued support from premium-format screenings, The Odyssey remains on track for another successful weekend. If the momentum continues, the film is expected to comfortably cross the Rs. 200 crore milestone before completing its fourth weekend, further cementing Christopher Nolan’s status as one of the most successful Hollywood filmmakers at the Indian box office.

Iranian flight plunges, makes emergency Ankara landing

ANKARA: An Iranian passenger aircraft travelling from Istanbul to Tehran made an emergency landing at Ankara International Airport after reportedly developing a serious technical problem during the flight. According to sources, Iranian Flight 7282 departed from Istanbul at 11:43am Pakistan Standard Time with Tehran as its destination. The flight initially proceeded normally after takeoff. At around noon, the aircraft was reportedly cruising at an altitude of approximately 35,000 feet when a sudden technical malfunction occurred. The aircraft subsequently began losing altitude, prompting the crew to take emergency measures. The pilot formally declared an emergency at approximately 12:13pm. During the emergency descent, the aircraft rapidly lost altitude and reportedly descended to around 10,975 feet. Sources said the aircraft later disappeared from radar at an altitude of approximately 7,815 feet. It reportedly reappeared on radar around five minutes later at an altitude of about 5,150 feet. As the situation developed, the pilot contacted Ankara Air Traffic Control and requested permission to divert the aircraft to Ankara for an emergency landing. The request was granted, and the aircraft landed safely at Ankara International Airport at approximately 12:29pm. Following the landing, security and emergency personnel immediately moved into position around the aircraft. The plane was surrounded as a precaution and subsequently transferred to a designated area of the airport. Sources said the aircraft remained at Ankara Airport following the emergency landing. Its engines were reportedly still running while the aircraft remained under observation. There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries following the landing. The exact nature of the technical malfunction has not yet been officially disclosed. It is also unclear whether the problem involved the aircraft’s engines, flight-control systems or another critical component. A technical inspection is expected to determine what caused the aircraft to lose altitude so rapidly during the flight. The incident comes as aviation authorities continue to maintain strict emergency procedures for aircraft experiencing technical problems while operating in international airspace.
