US Department of Defence orders swift ramp-up in weapons manufacturing as conflict with Iran strains stockpiles

The United States Department of Defence has called on defence contractors to accelerate weapons production amidst growing anxiety over dwindling military stockpiles as hostilities with Iran persist.

Deputy Secretary of Defence Steve Feinberg issued a formal directive on Wednesday, setting a 21-day deadline for defence industry leaders to deliver proposals aimed at driving significantly faster delivery timelines and boosting output for critical capabilities.

The directive was initially revealed by The Washington Post following heightened scrutiny regarding the condition of US weapons reserves during the ongoing conflict.

Spokesperson for the Department of Defence Sean Parnell verified the authenticity of the directive, noting that the submissions will directly shape the Pentagon’s budget request for fiscal year 2028.

“The August 5 memo is real,” Parnell stated. “It will inform the fiscal year 2028 budget submitted to Congress for funding, and it is entirely consistent with our ongoing push to rebuild the defence industrial base.”

Parnell added that direct engagement with weapons manufacturers is routine practice, defending the administration’s aggressive measures to expedite procurement schedules.

He detailed that Feinberg is actively working to overhaul what he characterized as a broken, outdated, and overly intricate procurement framework, ensuring the military retains the capability to produce equipment at a pace that matches modern threat levels.

    Supreme Court upholds landlord’s right to us…

    The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that a property owner has the exclusive right to decide how to use their property and is not bound by the wishes or preferences of a tenant. The judgment came while deciding a long-running landlord-tenant dispute involving a residential building in Karachi’s Saddar area. In an eight-page verdict authored by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, the apex court set aside an earlier decision of the Sindh High Court, which had ruled in favour of the tenant. The Supreme Court observed that it is a well-established legal principle that a property owner is the sole judge of their own requirements. The court held that if a landlord submits a sworn statement declaring the need to use their property personally, that statement is sufficient to establish bona fide necessity unless proven otherwise. The judgment further stated that an owner cannot be compelled to use another portion of the property simply because a tenant believes alternative accommodation is available. The court emphasised that the landlord’s choice regarding the use of their property cannot be dictated by the tenant. The case involved a dispute over a flat in a building located in Karachi’s Saddar neighbourhood. During the proceedings, the tenant argued that several other flats in the same building had become vacant and could instead be used by the landlord. The Sindh High Court accepted this argument and ruled in favour of the tenant. However, the Supreme Court disagreed with that reasoning, stating that the availability of other vacant units does not deprive the owner of the right to reclaim a specific property for personal use. Allowing the landlord’s appeal, the Supreme Court ordered the tenant to vacate the flat within six months, bringing the legal dispute to a close while reaffirming the property rights of landlords under the law.

    Finland restricts sea traffic near Russia

    Finland has temporarily closed part of its airspace and restricted maritime traffic along its southern coast near the Russian border due to concerns over possible stray drones. The Finnish military announced the measures on Tuesday. Officials said the restrictions were introduced to ensure authorities can respond safely if drones enter the area. A military spokesperson said the measures would allow authorities to take necessary countermeasures while protecting people in the affected areas. The military did not disclose the source of information about the possible drone activity. The spokesperson said details could not be shared because they were related to ongoing operational matters. Ukrainian drones targeting Russian positions have reportedly entered the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania this year. Ukraine has increased its use of long-range drones against targets inside Russia. Kyiv and several NATO members have blamed Russian electronic interference for causing some Ukrainian drones to deviate from their intended routes and enter NATO airspace. Moscow, however, has accused Ukraine of deliberately directing drones across international borders. Finland’s latest restrictions highlight the security concerns facing NATO’s northern members as drone warfare continues to expand in the region.
