Mike Hesson holds key meeting ahead of Champions Cup

MULTAN: Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has arrived in Multan for the National Champions Cup, where he held an important meeting with the coaching staff of all four participating teams as the domestic tournament gets ready to kick off the 2026-27 season.

Hesson met the head coaches of the four sides — Misbah-ul-Haq, Ijaz Junior, Iqbal Imam and Aizaz Cheema — to discuss ways of improving players’ one-day cricket skills and ensuring that the tournament serves as a meaningful platform for national selection and development.

Pakistan bowling coach Ashley Noffke and National Cricket Academy (NCA) Head of Coach Education Shahid Aslam also attended the meeting, adding further weight to discussions around player development and coaching standards.

The meeting comes at an important time for Pakistan cricket, with the Champions Cup being viewed as the first major step towards preparations for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Hesson’s presence in Multan signals the national team management’s focus on closely monitoring domestic performances while identifying players capable of making the jump to international cricket.

Particular attention is expected to be given to players’ consistency, tactical awareness and ability to handle pressure in the 50-over format. The tournament will also provide coaches with an opportunity to assess emerging talent in a competitive environment.

The National Champions Cup will begin on August 11, coinciding with the official start of Pakistan’s 2026-27 domestic cricket season.

With the World Cup on the horizon, the tournament could prove crucial in shaping Pakistan’s next generation of one-day performers.

    Iran has appointed veteran Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), placing a prominent security figure in a senior position at a sensitive time for the country. Rezaei, 71, replaces Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr as secretary of the council. Zolqadr has instead been appointed as a political adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. The SNSC plays a central role in coordinating Iran’s national security and foreign policy. It is formally chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian and includes senior military, intelligence and government officials. Rezaei brings decades of military and political experience to the position. He joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and became its commander in 1981, when he was only 27. He remained at the helm of the IRGC for 16 years. Much of his tenure coincided with the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. During that period, he oversaw the development of the organisation’s land, naval and air capabilities. After leaving the IRGC command, Rezaei remained an influential figure within Iran’s political and security establishment. He later served for more than two decades as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. He also entered electoral politics and repeatedly sought the presidency of Iran. From 2021 to 2023, he served as vice president for economic affairs under former President Ebrahim Raisi. Rezaei holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Tehran, although much of his career has been focused on military, security and political affairs. His relationship with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is another significant factor behind his new appointment. Rezaei was named a military adviser to Khamenei after the latter assumed the supreme leadership earlier this year. Khamenei also issued a decree appointing Rezaei as his representative on the SNSC. The decree highlighted Rezaei’s extensive military experience, particularly his role during the Iran-Iraq war. During the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, Rezaei has frequently made public statements on security and foreign policy issues. He has expressed strong opposition to concessions in negotiations with Washington and has repeatedly taken a hard-line position on Iran’s security interests. His appointment therefore places an experienced IRGC commander at the centre of Iran’s national security decision-making structure. Rezaei’s political journey began even before the Islamic Revolution. As a teenager, he became involved in opposition activities against Iran’s Pahlavi monarchy. He was arrested by SAVAK, the Shah’s security service, in 1973.

    Pakistan marks Kashmir Exploitation Day

    Pakistan observed Kashmir Exploitation Day on August 5, with political leaders reaffirming their support for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and describing India’s actions of August 5, 2019, as illegal and contrary to international law and United Nations resolutions. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan remains committed to supporting the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. In his message, he stated that India’s unilateral constitutional changes made on August 5, 2019, were unlawful and pledged Pakistan’s continued moral, political and diplomatic support for Kashmiris. He also urged India to reverse all measures that altered the disputed region’s constitutional status. The Foreign Office said Pakistan continues to observe Kashmir Exploitation Day to highlight the events of August 5, 2019. A spokesperson praised the courage, resilience and sacrifices of the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and reiterated Islamabad’s support for their cause. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to the families of those who lost their lives during the Kashmir conflict and urged the United Nations and international human rights organisations to take notice of alleged human rights violations in the region. She said Pakistan would never accept the constitutional changes introduced by India in 2019. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said India’s actions were against United Nations Security Council resolutions and called on the international community to play a greater role in protecting human rights in Kashmir. Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani condemned India’s August 5 measures, saying attempts to alter the region’s demographic composition and identity were unacceptable. Senator Sherry Rehman praised the resilience and determination of Kashmiris, while Federal Minister Amir Muqam, speaking at a rally in Islamabad, reiterated Pakistan’s support for Kashmir and criticised India’s policies in the disputed territory. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari also condemned India’s 2019 constitutional changes, saying they had failed to suppress the Kashmiri people’s demand for self-determination and warning that such policies could undermine regional peace.

    SWABI: Tobacco growers in Swabi took to the streets on Monday, protesting against what they described as unfairly low purchase prices for their crop and demanding enforcement of the official rate announced by the Pakistan Tobacco Board. The protest was held outside the Swabi Press Club, where farmers were joined by political and social activists as well as members of the local community. Growers said they were being offered as little as Rs350 per kilogram, despite the official rate of Rs750 per kilogram. During the demonstration, tobacco grower and former ANP district general secretary Haji Tameez Khan burned around 500 kilograms of his tobacco crop to highlight the financial pressure facing farmers. Speaking at the protest, Khan said the cost of producing tobacco had reached nearly Rs750 per kilogram, making offers of Rs350 to Rs400 per kilogram unsustainable for growers. He said farmers had already suffered substantial losses in the previous season and were now struggling to clear debts owed to labourers and suppliers. Khan said tobacco was a major cash crop and generated significant revenue for the cigarette industry, yet farmers remained uncertain about receiving a price that covered their production costs. He warned that continued failure to address the issue could lead more growers to adopt similar forms of protest. The protesters also criticised the Pakistan Tobacco Board and tobacco companies for failing to resolve the pricing dispute. They called on the authorities to ensure that tobacco-buying companies adhere to the officially approved rate and protect farmers from losses. National Awami Party district chairman Masood Jabbar said tobacco was a key source of income for Swabi’s farming community. He warned that failure to address growers’ grievances could lead to wider protests across the district, with more farmers expected to join future demonstrations.

    A mosquito-borne disease has resurfaced in Israel, with 13 people reportedly diagnosed with West Nile fever this year and two deaths recorded. According to reports, Israel’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in several areas where cases have been identified. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat. Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites. Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms. However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions. Investigation Underway Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes. Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people. The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission. Previous Outbreak in 2024 Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported. The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus. The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.
