West nile virus cases rise in Israel as two people…

A mosquito-borne disease has resurfaced in Israel, with 13 people reportedly diagnosed with West Nile fever this year and two deaths recorded.

According to reports, Israel’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in several areas where cases have been identified. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat.

Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites.

Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms.

However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis.

The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions.

Investigation Underway

Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes.

Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people.

The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission.

Previous Outbreak in 2024

Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported.

The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes.

While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus.

The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.

    BTS star V reveals two-year hearing loss struggle

V said he is now receiving medical treatment, taking medication and visiting hospital regularly to manage the condition. BTS members began taking breaks from their group activities in 2022 as they prepared to fulfil their military obligations. V enlisted in 2023 and completed his service in June 2025. The latest livestream came after BTS completed its concerts in Baltimore, Maryland. During the livestream, V was joined by fellow BTS member Jungkook, who also spoke about an injury affecting his shin during the tour.     Islamabad:Pakistan has preferential trade arrangements with 93 countries. Its trade promotion authority participated in 91 international exhibitions and sent 11 trade delegations abroad in the last financial year, yet the country still has no registered Pakistani trade representative organisation or joint chamber in China. The absence of a formal Pakistani commercial organisation in China became a major point of concern before the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce, as senators questioned why Pakistan has not established a stronger private sector trade presence in one of its most important international markets. The committee, chaired by Senator Anusha Rahman, was told that no Pakistani joint chamber is currently registered in China and no Pakistani trade representative organisation is operating there. The Secretary Commerce said a Pakistani chamber could be established in China either as a joint chamber or as a branch, but it would have to meet the requirements set by Chinese authorities. He further explained that only one joint chamber from Pakistan could register itself in China under the relevant arrangements. Senators questioned why such an organisation had not been established despite the large scale business relationship between Pakistan and China. The Secretary Commerce said the reason could best be explained by the trade organisations themselves. The issue became more important when senators asked what real benefit Pakistan would gain from establishing a joint chamber or representative office. The Secretary Commerce said the Ministry of Commerce could not give a clear position on the matter and suggested that the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry and other chambers should provide their views. He said Pakistani private sector organisations could establish a chamber in major Chinese commercial centres such as Beijing or Shanghai, while the Ministry of Commerce would provide full support to interested chambers if they fulfilled Chinese requirements. Senator Anusha Rahman said a chamber could help Pakistani companies follow up more effectively on commercial opportunities in China. The discussion exposed a gap between Pakistan’s growing trade ambitions and its physical commercial presence in an important foreign market. The committee also examined the performance of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and its efforts to increase exports. The Chief Executive of TDAP said the authority was often blamed whenever Pakistan’s exports failed to grow, but export performance depended on several factors beyond the authority’s direct control. He pointed to production costs, electricity prices and the cost of financing as major factors affecting the ability of Pakistani businesses to compete in international markets. This means that simply sending trade delegations or participating in international exhibitions cannot guarantee higher exports if Pakistani products remain expensive to produce. The Commerce Minister, Jam Kamal Khan, told the committee that the Ministry of Commerce regularly sends policy proposals and recommendations to the government to improve the country’s trade environment. He said he had also proposed to the Prime Minister that reciprocal incentives should be pursued to increase exports. The minister said the Ministry of Commerce was working on new proposals to improve international marketing and increase Pakistani exports. He stressed that Pakistan could not become more competitive in international markets without dealing with the underlying costs faced by businesses and improving the investment environment. The figures presented by TDAP showed that the authority remained active in promoting Pakistani products abroad. During the last financial year, TDAP participated in 91 international exhibitions. The authority also organised or supported 11 trade delegations to foreign countries to search for new markets and strengthen business connections. Pakistan currently has preferential trade arrangements with 93 countries, giving Pakistani businesses access to special trade opportunities in international markets. However, the Senate committee stressed that trade agreements and international relationships must produce visible economic results. Members said Pakistan’s trade agreements should not remain only on paper. They should lead to higher exports, more investment and greater access for Pakistani businesses in foreign markets. The Chief Executive TDAP also clarified an important point about the authority’s financing. TDAP does not receive funding from the Export Development Fund. Instead, it receives government financing for specific projects. The committee also discussed the importance of stronger cooperation between Pakistani and Chinese institutions and private sector organisations. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla highlighted the role that Chinese international cooperation and trade specialists could play in developing stronger business and investment links. The discussion suggested that Pakistan needs to connect several areas of economic policy instead of treating export promotion as a separate activity. Lower production costs, cheaper and reliable electricity, easier access to finance, stronger investment policies, better international marketing and effective trade representation are all important if Pakistani companies are to compete successfully abroad. TDAP’s participation in 91 international exhibitions and 11 foreign trade delegations shows that the authority is actively trying to open doors for Pakistani exporters. But the Senate discussion also made clear that opening doors is only the first step. Pakistan must ensure that its businesses are able to walk through those doors with competitive products, attractive prices and the capacity to supply international buyers. The committee appreciated TDAP’s efforts but stressed the need for a coordinated national strategy linking trade policy, investment, industrial competitiveness, export promotion and overseas market representation.

The university also recorded its highest-ever participation in the entry test, while the application deadline remains August 4. He claimed that the institution’s success had prompted certain groups to launch what he termed a deliberate propaganda campaign. The spokesperson said the controversy involving the two former sports students stemmed from disciplinary issues rather than the serious allegations circulated on social media. He maintained that the matter originated after a dispute between members of the girls’ sports hostel and disagreements related to team selection. According to the university, the students were involved in repeated altercations with fellow athletes, prompting the hostel administration to initiate an inquiry. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the students concerned were instructed to vacate the hostel. However, the university alleged that they refused to comply and later became involved in another confrontation, after which police were called following an emergency complaint. The incidents led the hostel inquiry committee to hold emergency meetings and ultimately order the closure of the girls’ sports hostel. The university further stated that one of the former athletes was not selected for the baseball team because of disciplinary concerns rather than sporting performance. It alleged that she later threatened to leave the university if she was not included in the squad and voluntarily applied to withdraw her original academic documents. During the document collection process, the university claims she, along with another former student and several others, attempted to pressure the administration by threatening to release a video portraying an alleged suicide attempt if their demands were not met. Punjab University said both students voluntarily collected their academic documents and left the institution. It also claimed that one of them subsequently joined another university’s sports team while Punjab University went on to win the championship without her. The university said it possesses evidence supporting its position and confirmed that faculty members, staff, and female students from the Department of Sports have submitted a formal complaint to the cybercrime authorities against the two former athletes and individuals allegedly involved in what it described as an organised campaign against the institution. The administration condemned attempts to use former students for what it called vested interests and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the university’s reputation through legal channels

    Son-in-Law kills wife, in-laws in Lahore’s Chuhng, later dies by suicide

    By Muhammad Hussain LAHORE: A man allegedly shot dead his wife, mother-in-law, father-in-law and brother-in-law before taking his own life in the Barkat Colony area of Chuhng, Lahore, on Tuesday morning. According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:45am when children had arrived at the house to read the Holy Quran. The suspect, identified as Imran Shaukat, reached his in-laws’ house armed with a pistol and a rifle and opened fire. Police said Imran’s wife, Samia Bibi, father-in-law Ali Khan, brother-in-law Zeeshan Khan and mother-in-law Shamaila Bibi were killed in the firing. According to initial details, Samia sustained gunshot wounds to the head, Ali Khan was shot in the chest and Zeeshan Khan was hit in the back. Shamaila Bibi also died after being caught in the firing. Police said the suspect had married Samia around six months ago. After the marriage, she had been living with her parents. The suspect allegedly wanted her to return and live with her. Relatives of the victims said Imran’s brother, Rizwan, is a police employee. They claimed that a case had also been registered against him at Chuhng Police Station a few months ago, but he was released after a few days. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, while further details regarding the motive behind the killings are being ascertained.
