West nile virus cases rise in Israel as two people…

A mosquito-borne disease has resurfaced in Israel, with 13 people reportedly diagnosed with West Nile fever this year and two deaths recorded.

According to reports, Israel’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in several areas where cases have been identified. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat.

Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites.

Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms.

However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis.

The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions.

Investigation Underway

Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes.

Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people.

The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission.

Previous Outbreak in 2024

Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported.

The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes.

While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus.

The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.

Rana Sanaullah vows to ‘set countdown critics st…

Adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that those counting down the government’s tenure will eventually be “set straight” themselves, and their countdown will also be corrected. Addressing a public gathering in Bagh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sanaullah said the people were the rightful owners of Pakistan and highlighted the strong bond between Pakistan and Kashmir. “Where in Pakistan are Kashmiris not working?” he asked, adding that Kashmiris enjoy all rights in the country. Sanaullah said Pakistan was incomplete without Kashmir and stressed that no force could weaken the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Kashmir. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader also claimed that four PML-N candidates would be elected to the legislative assembly in the upcoming election, which is scheduled to take place in two days. Gold price in Pakistan rises by Rs1,700 per tola

Gold prices moved higher across Pakistan on Monday, tracking an upward trend in the international bullion market, according to the latest rates issued by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA). The price of 24-karat gold per tola increased by Rs1,700, taking the new rate to Rs428,436. The recovery comes after a sharp decline recorded in the previous trading session, when the precious metal had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736 on Saturday. The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold also witnessed an increase, climbing by Rs1,457 to reach Rs367,314 in local markets. Market analysts said the rise in domestic gold prices reflects the positive movement in global bullion markets, where investor demand strengthened amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook and expectations regarding interest rate policies. In the international market, the price of gold gained $17 per ounce, pushing the bullion rate to $4,060 per ounce, including a premium of $20. The increase in global prices was mirrored in Pakistan’s local market, where gold rates are largely influenced by international trends and fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. Meanwhile, silver prices also registered a notable increase. The price of silver per tola rose by Rs54, reaching Rs6,291 in the domestic market.

Human-like robotic head amazes people with realist…

The gap between humans and machines is becoming smaller as robotics technology continues to advance. A Chinese startup has introduced a highly advanced robotic head that can imitate human facial expressions, attracting attention for its realistic movements and lifelike appearance. The company reportedly behind the innovation is AgiHead Farm, founded in 2024 by Columbia University engineer Yuhang Hu. The startup introduced the robotic head known as Origin M1, which aims to create more natural interaction between humans and machines. Unlike traditional robots that often display limited movements, the robotic head is designed to reproduce subtle facial expressions. These include eyebrow movements, slight smiles, eye movements, and other small changes that are important for human communication. The robot uses a silicone-based outer layer and a network of miniature motors placed beneath the surface. These motors work similarly to human facial muscles by expanding and contracting to create different expressions. This technology allows the robot to respond in a way that appears more natural compared with earlier robotic systems. The robotic head is also equipped with cameras hidden inside its eyes, allowing it to observe its surroundings and track movement. Built-in microphones and speakers enable it to listen and communicate with people, creating the possibility of more interactive human-machine conversations. The advanced technology comes with a high price tag. According to reports, the most sophisticated version of the robotic head costs around $150,000, making it primarily a product for research institutions, technology companies, and specialized applications. The company aims to further improve the system by adding lip-sync technology and advanced artificial intelligence models. Future versions could potentially understand human speech better and respond with facial expressions that match the tone and emotions of a conversation. Experts believe that realistic facial expressions are one of the biggest challenges in developing human-like robots. While robots have made significant progress in movement and artificial intelligence, creating machines that communicate naturally through facial expressions remains a complex field. The development of lifelike robotic faces represents a major step in robotics research. As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to evolve, technologies like Origin M1 could influence future applications in education, healthcare, customer service, and human-computer interaction.
