Sarfaraz defends selection after Pakistan defeat

Pakistan red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed has hinted at possible changes to the playing XI for the second Test following the team’s 90-run defeat to the West Indies in the series opener.

Speaking after the match, Sarfaraz admitted that Pakistan’s batting performance fell well below expectations, particularly in the second innings, where the side once again failed to build meaningful partnerships. He described the batting collapse as the biggest factor behind the defeat and stressed that the team must improve if it hopes to level the series.

The coach said Pakistan had a valuable opportunity to take control of the match by securing a first-innings lead but failed to capitalize on the advantage. According to him, the missed opportunity shifted the momentum in favour of the hosts and made the chase in the fourth innings significantly more difficult.

Sarfaraz also reflected on the dismissal of opener Imam-ul-Haq, saying the left-hander had looked comfortable at the crease and was batting well before losing his wicket. He believed that had Imam shown a little more patience, Pakistan could have built a stronger foundation and put themselves in a better position to challenge the target.

The head coach also expressed disappointment with the team’s bowling effort on the third day of the Test. He pointed to the 61-run partnership for the eighth wicket by the West Indies, saying Pakistan should not have allowed the lower-order batters to add crucial runs. He noted that those extra runs eventually proved significant in the context of the match.

Despite criticism over Pakistan’s team selection, Sarfaraz defended the decision to field five specialist bowlers. He said the management had carefully assessed the playing conditions before finalizing the combination and believed it was the right approach based on the nature of the pitch.

“We selected the side after evaluating the conditions and felt that playing five bowlers gave us the best chance of taking 20 wickets,” he said, adding that the execution on the field ultimately mattered more than the team composition.

Looking ahead to the second Test, Sarfaraz confirmed that changes remain a possibility as the coaching staff reviews the team’s performance. He revealed that middle-order batter Saud Shakeel and opener Abdullah Shafique are still under consideration for selection.

However, he made it clear that no final decision has been taken regarding the playing XI. The coaching staff will assess the match situation, the expected pitch conditions and the overall balance of the side before naming the team for the second Test.

Pakistan will now look to regroup quickly after the disappointing start to the series, with the second Test offering an opportunity to bounce back and keep the contest alive. Team management will be hoping that both the batting and bowling units respond positively after a below-par performance in the opening match.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said discussions with Omani officials aimed at reducing tensions remain ongoing in Tehran. Iranian officials blamed the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to global shipping on US and Israeli military operations, insisting that foreign military actions had created instability in one of the world’s most important energy corridors. The IRGC also claimed two oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz turned back after a fire broke out on one vessel. The group warned the strategic waterway would remain closed while military pressure against Iran continued. Elsewhere, Iran condemned recent US and Saudi air strikes inside Iraq, calling them violations of Iraqi sovereignty and international law.     JI announces nationwide shutter-down strike after …

    Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a nationwide shutter-down strike after 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, as the party continues its protests against rising petroleum prices and the government’s petroleum levy. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, Hafiz Naeem said the JI’s sit-ins in provincial capitals had entered their eighth day and would continue until the government practically implemented the party’s demands. He rejected the idea of ending the protests solely on the basis of government assurances, saying the party wanted concrete action rather than promises. Hafiz Naeem called for a reduction in petroleum product prices and criticised what he described as excessive government expenditure. He also raised concerns over rising prices of essential commodities, saying flour and sugar mafias were making life difficult for ordinary citizens while farmers were struggling with expensive fertiliser. The JI chief said the nationwide shutter-down strike would be launched after Eid Milad-un-Nabi, which falls on August 26 this year. He warned that the party’s protest movement would not be called off until its demands were implemented. According to Hafiz Naeem, negotiations would no longer be based on requests for protesters to end their sit-ins in exchange for verbal commitments. JI workers have been holding demonstrations since August 16. Sit-ins are being staged outside the Punjab chief minister’s residence in Lahore and at governor houses in Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. The protests come as consumers face growing pressure from fuel costs, inflation and high electricity bills. The government has also faced criticism following repeated increases in petroleum prices. The situation has become more challenging amid fluctuations in international oil prices linked to renewed tensions in the Middle East. Authorities have also moved from a 15-day fuel price review to a daily mechanism. The fuel price issue has triggered separate concerns among transporters and petroleum dealers. Earlier this week, the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance suspended a nationwide strike for 40 days after receiving assurances from the federal and Sindh governments regarding several demands, including petroleum pricing. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association has also pressed the government to resolve outstanding issues and honour previous commitments.

    Receding Danube River reveals World War II remains in Budapest

Experts noted that a combination of riverbed mud and petroleum slowed the decay of the artifacts and human remains over the past eight decades. Analysis of the identification tags revealed that one soldier served in the Wehrmacht while the other belonged to the Waffen-SS. Because both halves of the soldiers’ identification tags remained intact rather than split, as was customary when casualties were processed, investigators confirmed that neither death was officially recorded during the war. The commission has initiated bone analysis and archival checks to identify the deceased before their eventual burial at the German war cemetery in Budaors.
