Hira Qaiser wins: Why is the internet divided?

Faisalabad’s Hira Qaiser has been crowned the winner of Pakistan Idol Season 2, securing the title after a months-long singing competition that concluded with a grand finale on Sunday.

Hira received a cash prize of Rs1.5 million along with the coveted trophy. Her victory came after a series of performances that earned her recognition from the judging panel and helped her reach the final stage of the competition.

The emotional finale became particularly memorable when Hira walked onto the stage with her toddler. She received the trophy from host Shafaat Ali and became visibly emotional during the celebration.

Hira, who comes from a middle-class family in Faisalabad, expressed her gratitude after being announced as the winner. She thanked the Pakistan Idol team, judges and viewers for supporting her throughout the competition.

For her final performance, Hira performed a song by Mekaal Hasan, receiving appreciation from the judges, including singer Atif Aslam.

However, her victory quickly became a subject of debate on social media. While many viewers congratulated Hira and praised her final performance, others questioned the judges’ decision and argued that another finalist was more deserving of the title.

Some social media users described Hira’s singing style as distinctive but limited. They argued that she frequently performed folk and Punjabi songs and suggested that she showed less versatility when performing Urdu tracks.

A section of viewers particularly backed Turab Nafees, saying the Karachi-based contestant demonstrated greater versatility and should have won the competition.

Other viewers suggested that the audience should have had a greater role in selecting the winner. They argued that a public voting system could have produced a different result.

Despite the criticism, Hira also received considerable support online. Many fans defended her victory and praised the quality of her performances throughout the season.

Supporters said the singer had established a strong connection with audiences and demonstrated enough consistency to deserve the title. Some also highlighted the emotional significance of her journey from Faisalabad to the Pakistan Idol stage.

The contrasting reactions have made Hira’s victory one of the most discussed moments of the season. While some viewers believe the judges made the right choice, others remain convinced that Turab Nafees or other finalists were stronger contenders.

Joe Root returns as England Test captain, Fleming takes coaching charge

England have made major changes to their Test setup, appointing Joe Root as captain for a second stint and naming former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming as head coach. The decisions come after Brendon McCullum was removed from the Test coaching role and Ben Stokes stepped away from international cricket earlier this month. Root, 35, previously led England in 64 Test matches between 2017 and 2022. He briefly returned to captaincy during the recent series against New Zealand and has now been given the responsibility of guiding England’s next generation of Test players. The Yorkshire batter is among the greatest run-scorers in Test history, sitting second on the all-time list behind India legend Sachin Tendulkar with more than 14,000 runs. Expressing his delight at the appointment, Root said leading England in Test cricket remains a great honour and challenge. He added that he is excited to work with the team and help develop emerging talent. Root also praised Fleming, describing him as an outstanding leader with deep knowledge of the game. Fleming, who enjoyed a successful coaching career with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, has been appointed to lead England’s Test side. Under his guidance, Chennai won five IPL titles, making him one of the most respected coaches in world cricket. The 53-year-old said his focus would be on immediate success while also building a strong foundation for England’s long-term future. He expressed excitement about working with Root and helping him succeed in his second spell as captain. England’s next Test assignment will be a three-match series against Pakistan, starting on August 19. Marcus Trescothick will handle coaching duties on an interim basis before Fleming officially takes charge later this year. England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key praised Fleming’s appointment, saying he has the experience and leadership qualities needed to turn England’s promising squad into a world-class team.

Oil prices rise as US-Iran uncertainty and shipping attacks raise supply concerns

BEIJING: Global oil prices advanced on Wednesday as uncertainty surrounding a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran, coupled with attacks on commercial shipping in key Middle Eastern waterways, heightened concerns about disruptions to crude supplies. At 0553 GMT, Brent crude futures had gained 75 cents, or 0.84%, to reach $89.66 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 72 cents, or 0.87%, to $83.92 a barrel. Both benchmarks had climbed by more than $1 earlier in the session. The latest gains followed a strong rally on Tuesday, when both Brent and WTI settled more than $1 higher, reaching their highest closing levels since July 31. Oil prices had already surged around 5% on Monday as market participants became increasingly sceptical about the prospects of a US-Iran agreement to end the conflict. Concerns intensified after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh demand that Iran compensate people killed in wars, attacks and protests. Market analysts said the latest developments have left energy markets highly sensitive to changes in the US-Iran narrative. “The Middle East is increasingly becoming a seesaw between ‘deal’ and ‘war’,” said Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova in Singapore, describing the resulting price swings as a pendulum moving between roughly $70 and $90 a barrel. Shipping Disruptions Add to Market Pressure Concerns over the safety of crude shipments were also reinforced after the United States and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis reported separate attacks involving shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, making any prolonged disruption there a major concern for global oil markets. Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei said the strategic waterway would remain closed unless Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions for ending the conflict. Those demands reportedly include the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to other regional conflicts. Trump, meanwhile, has continued to send mixed signals about the US response, alternating between warnings of a tougher military approach and suggestions that an agreement could still be reached. The uncertainty has contributed to sharp swings in crude prices as traders attempt to assess whether the conflict will escalate or move towards negotiations. Sachdeva said markets could increasingly become accustomed to the frequent changes in the geopolitical narrative, creating a highly volatile environment for short-term traders and speculators. Hormuz Traffic Falls Sharply Shipping data highlighted the scale of the disruption. The number of vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to only eight on Tuesday, according to shipping data cited in market reports. That compares with an estimated 125 to 140 vessels a day before the conflict, underscoring the extent to which security concerns have affected maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. A sustained reduction in shipping through Hormuz could have significant implications for global energy markets because the route handles a substantial share of international oil shipments. US Crude Inventories in Focus Despite geopolitical concerns, developments in the United States provided a counterweight to the bullish sentiment. A Reuters poll released on Tuesday had indicated that US crude and fuel inventories were expected to decline during the week ended August 7. However, market sources citing data from the American Petroleum Institute (API) reported a substantial increase in US crude stocks. According to the sources, US crude inventories increased by approximately 9.1 million barrels last week. Gasoline stocks declined by around 1.5 million barrels, while distillate inventories fell by approximately 596,000 barrels. The reported crude build was considerably larger than market expectations. If confirmed by official figures, the increase could ease concerns over tightness in the US oil market and potentially limit further price gains. Haitong Futures said in a market note that the unexpectedly large increase in crude inventories could reduce some of the supply-related pressure currently supporting oil prices. EIA Data Awaited Investors are now awaiting official inventory figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the US Department of Energy. The EIA’s weekly petroleum report is scheduled for release at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time (1430 GMT) on Wednesday. Market participants will closely examine the data for signs of changes in crude production, refinery activity, gasoline demand and commercial inventories. Any significant deviation from the API figures could trigger additional volatility in oil prices. Longer-Term Supply Risks Remain Beyond the immediate market reaction, longer-term concerns over Middle Eastern supply disruptions continue to provide support to crude prices. The EIA has estimated that disruptions to Middle Eastern crude supplies could amount to approximately 600,000 barrels per day and persist through the end of 2027. With geopolitical tensions still unresolved and shipping activity through major regional waterways significantly reduced, traders are expected to remain highly sensitive to developments involving the United States, Iran and regional armed groups.

Lahore ranked among the world’s dafest major…

Lahore: Pakistan’s cultural capital has earned international recognition after being ranked among the world’s safest major cities in the 2026 Numbeo Crime and Safety Index. The latest report shows that Lahore recorded one of the lowest crime index scores among several globally recognized metropolitan areas, reflecting continued improvements in public safety and law enforcement. According to the 2026 rankings, Lahore outperformed a number of major international cities in terms of safety. The city ranked ahead of Karachi, New Delhi, Paris, London, Washington, New York, and Mexico City, highlighting its growing reputation as a comparatively secure urban centre. The results suggest that residents and visitors perceive Lahore as offering a safer environment than many other large cities included in the global survey. The report also indicates measurable progress over the past year. Lahore’s crime index declined from 36.8 in mid-2025 to 36.2 in mid-2026, while its safety index improved from 63.2 to 63.8during the same period. A lower crime index reflects reduced concerns about criminal activity, while a higher safety index indicates increased public confidence in personal security and the overall law-and-order situation. The improvement in these indicators demonstrates a positive trend for the city, suggesting that ongoing efforts to enhance public safety have produced encouraging results. Although no major city is completely free of crime, Lahore’s steady progress has strengthened its position among the safer urban centres included in the international rankings. Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Muhammad Faisal Kamran welcomed the report, saying the improved ranking reflects the Lahore Police’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens. According to the senior police official, the department has implemented a range of security measures designed to reduce crime, improve emergency response, and strengthen law enforcement across the provincial capital. He noted that increased police patrols, intelligence-based operations, the use of surveillance technology, and closer coordination between law enforcement agencies have all contributed to improving the city’s security environment. Authorities have also focused on enhancing community policing initiatives, encouraging greater cooperation between residents and police to help prevent criminal activities. Officials believe that these efforts have not only improved public confidence but have also made Lahore a more attractive destination for business, tourism, and investment. A safer urban environment is considered an important factor in promoting economic growth, encouraging commercial activity, and improving the overall quality of life for residents. The Numbeo Crime and Safety Index is widely referenced for comparing perceptions of crime and safety across cities around the world. The rankings are based on user-contributed data and reflect public perceptions of crime levels, personal safety during the day and at night, concerns about violent and property crimes, and confidence in local law enforcement. While authorities welcomed the latest ranking, they emphasized that efforts to improve security will continue. Police officials said they remain committed to further reducing crime through modern policing strategies, technological innovation, and stronger public engagement. Lahore’s improved standing in the 2026 Numbeo Crime and Safety Index represents a significant achievement for the city. The latest figures highlight continued progress in public safety and reinforce Lahore’s growing reputation as one of the safer major cities in the world, while authorities pledge to build on these gains in the years ahead.

Woman arrested after four men stabbed near Covent …

Police arrested a woman on Wednesday after four men suffered stab wounds during an incident near London’s Covent Garden district, with investigators saying they believe the attack stemmed from a mental health related episode. Officers detained the woman, who is in her forties, on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and assault. She remains in custody as the investigation continues. Police described the incident as mental health related, though they have not released further details about what led up to the attack. Emergency crews found four men, aged 34, 39, 42 and 52, suffering from stab wounds at the scene. A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said paramedics treated all four men on site before transporting them to a nearby trauma centre for further care. Authorities have not yet released updates on the men’s conditions. The stabbings took place on Endell Street, a road situated about a quarter of a mile from Covent Garden square, one of London’s most visited tourist destinations known for its street performers, shops and market stalls. The area typically draws large crowds of visitors and locals throughout the day, and Wednesday’s incident occurred in a part of the city usually associated with heavy foot traffic rather than violent crime. Police have not disclosed whether the woman and the four victims knew each other before the attack, nor have they indicated a specific motive beyond the reference to a mental health related incident. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence at the scene and are expected to provide further updates as the inquiry progresses. London has periodically grappled with knife related violence in public spaces, prompting ongoing debate over policing resources and mental health support services across the city. Incidents involving individuals in psychiatric distress have drawn particular attention from advocacy groups, who argue that stronger community mental health infrastructure could help prevent similar episodes before they escalate into violence.

Rick and Morty season 9 finale leaves fans heartbroken

The season 9 finale of Rick and Morty has left fans emotional after delivering one of the series’ darkest and most heartbreaking endings. Titled Field of Dreams, the episode shifts its focus to Morty as he embarks on an emotional journey across different realities, forcing him to confront difficult truths about himself, Rick and the meaning of family. The finale has since sparked widespread discussion among viewers, many calling it one of the show’s most powerful episodes to date. The episode begins with Morty travelling through multiple dimensions, attending the funerals of alternate versions of himself in search of a sense of belonging. His journey eventually leads him to a parallel Smith family mourning the loss of their own Morty. Unlike the dysfunctional family he knows, this version has distanced itself from Rick because of his destructive behaviour and alcoholism, creating what appears to be a healthier home environment. For a brief moment, Morty experiences the warmth and stability he has always wanted. The alternate family treats him with kindness, making him question whether his own life could have been different. However, the illusion of a perfect family soon begins to unravel as Morty’s presence unintentionally changes their lives, proving that no reality is truly free from pain or consequences. The emotional core of the finale centres on Professor Rick, a version of Rick who abandoned his destructive lifestyle and spent years attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after losing Diane. Morty eventually tells him the truth about Diane’s fate, offering him comfort but also reopening old wounds. The revelation ultimately pushes Professor Rick back toward alcohol, suggesting that even the best versions of Rick cannot completely escape their past. As Morty watches yet another family fall apart, he begins blaming himself for the destruction around him. Believing that he brings chaos wherever he goes, he returns to his own dimension emotionally defeated. The closing scene features Rick taking Morty on a motorcycle ride before drunkenly declaring that he is Morty’s father. Rather than rejecting the statement, Morty quietly accepts it, implying that he now sees his future as inseparable from Rick’s influence. The ending has particularly resonated with fans because it suggests Morty is finally accepting that he may become more like Rick than he ever wanted. Instead of offering hope, the finale presents a bleak emotional conclusion in which Morty sees himself as someone who damages the lives of those around him. Critics have described the episode as one of the series’ most mature explorations of identity, trauma and family relationships. A post-credit scene hints that more interdimensional chaos lies ahead, setting up future storylines for season 10. While the finale leaves several questions unanswered, it succeeds in delivering an emotionally devastating conclusion that has earned praise from critics and viewers alike. Many fans have called Field of Dreams one of the strongest Rick and Morty finales ever produced, applauding its willingness to place emotional storytelling above spectacle.
