Spider-Man tops Endgame box office record

Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo have congratulated the team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the film surpassed one of Avengers: Endgame’s biggest domestic box office records.

The filmmakers shared a public message on social media, praising the cast and crew after the latest Spider-Man film crossed the $1 billion mark globally and achieved the highest domestic opening weekend in box office history, overtaking the long-standing record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.

In their message, the Russo brothers congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, lead actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with producers and the entire production team. They described the achievement as a historic moment and declared that “the gauntlet has been passed,” referencing Marvel’s iconic Infinity Gauntlet.

Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken several records set by Endgame, it has not yet become the fastest film to earn $1 billion worldwide, leaving that milestone intact.

Industry observers believe the competition could intensify later this year when Marvel releases Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. The highly anticipated superhero film is expected to arrive in cinemas in December and is already being viewed as a potential record-breaking blockbuster.

The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has further strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with strong audience turnout and impressive global ticket sales continuing to drive its performance at the box office.

Shazia Marri demands accountability over PIMS trag…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Member of the National Assembly Shazia Marri has strongly criticised the federal government over the deaths of newborn babies in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) fire, calling the incident a serious example of administrative negligence. In a statement, Marri said innocent children had lost their lives, yet no one appeared to be taking responsibility for the tragedy. She alleged that ordinary citizens were paying the price for what she described as incompetence and poor management by the federal government. Marri demanded that those responsible for the incident be identified and proceeded against according to the law. She questioned the federal health minister’s position, asking what justification there was for remaining in office if the minister could not ensure the safety and proper administration of a major government hospital. The PPP leader said the deaths of newborns could not simply be dismissed as an accident while ignoring possible administrative failures. She called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the PIMS fire and urged authorities to determine whether negligence or shortcomings in hospital management contributed to the loss of lives. Marri also questioned the hospital’s fire safety arrangements and emergency response. She asked where the required safety measures were when the fire broke out and why immediate rescue and emergency procedures could not prevent the deaths. The PPP leader demanded strict legal action against anyone found responsible following the investigation. She said the federal government should accept responsibility for the incident and ensure justice for the families who lost their children. Marri described the loss of innocent lives as irreparable and said those found guilty of negligence should not be given any concession. Her remarks came amid widespread public anger following the PIMS tragedy, which has prompted demands for accountability, improved fire safety systems and stronger emergency preparedness at government hospitals.

Producer claims Netflix security failure cost Him $105 million

A film producer has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, seeking $105 million in damages after claiming that a copy of his unreleased Nicolas Cage movie was stolen from the company’s Hollywood studios. According to the lawsuit, producer Simon Afram alleges that Netflix failed to properly protect a master copy of his World War II drama, Fortitude, resulting in the loss of the film and causing significant financial harm. The legal complaint was filed in a California court on Wednesday. The lawsuit states that Afram and his production team delivered an unencrypted master copy of Fortitude to Netflix in June after the streaming giant requested the film as part of discussions over a possible distribution deal. Afram reportedly invested more than $45 million in the project, which took around seven years to complete. At the time, the filmmakers were hoping to secure a distribution agreement with either Netflix or another major entertainment company. However, only nine days after the film was delivered, the producers received an email from Netflix informing them that several hard drives had been stolen from the company’s offices. According to the lawsuit, the stolen items included the drive containing the only master copy of Fortitude. The producers argue that the theft has severely damaged the commercial value of the movie. They claim that distributors are unlikely to purchase a film that could potentially be leaked online through piracy, making it a far riskier investment. They also contend that Netflix should have implemented stronger security measures to protect valuable and confidential film materials stored at its facilities. According to the complaint, no major distributor would be willing to spend tens of millions of dollars acquiring and promoting a film while facing the possibility that an unauthorized copy could surface online at any moment. The producers believe this ongoing risk has effectively destroyed the movie’s market value, prompting them to seek at least $105 million in compensation. Netflix has rejected the allegations and said it does not accept responsibility for the claimed losses. In a statement, the company argued that the filmmakers delivered the master copy without using standard industry security protections, including encryption, and therefore Netflix should not be held liable for any resulting damage. The streaming service also emphasized that although it does not own the rights to Fortitude, it takes the security of film content seriously. Netflix said it launched an investigation into the theft after the incident and has continued monitoring piracy websites to ensure that unauthorized copies of the film do not appear online. In addition, Netflix accused Afram’s legal team of acting in bad faith. The company said it chose not to share details of its internal investigation with the producer’s lawyers because it believed they were attempting to pressure Netflix into paying a large financial settlement instead of cooperating to address the situation. The legal dispute is expected to focus on whether Netflix had a duty to safeguard the master copy of the film and whether the theft caused the financial losses claimed by the producers. The outcome of the case could have broader implications for how studios and streaming platforms handle the security of unreleased films during distribution negotiations.

James Haven comes out as gay after marriage annulment

James Haven, the older brother of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, has publicly shared that he is gay following the end of his marriage to Romi Imbelli. Haven revealed his sexuality during a live broadcast that appeared on Imbelli’s Substack platform. During the conversation, he also announced the launch of his upcoming weekly podcast, Save Haven with James Haven, where he plans to speak with guests about the defining moments, personal decisions, and life experiences that have shaped their identities. Speaking openly about his journey, Haven explained that he came out to Imbelli after their marriage was annulled in March 2025. The couple had tied the knot in August 2024, but their relationship ended only 15 days after the wedding. Reflecting on his childhood, Haven shared that he had always felt different but did not have the words to explain those feelings at the time. He recalled being fascinated by Disney princesses from a very young age, saying the characters helped him connect with a part of himself that he could not yet understand. He emphasized that his interest was never about pretending to be someone else. Instead, he described it as allowing his authentic personality to shine through. According to Haven, publicly acknowledging his sexuality is not about changing who he is but about letting others see the person he has always been. The actor and producer also expressed hope that his family and those close to him would respond with compassion and understanding. He said he wished people would choose love over fear and focus on their personal connection with him rather than labels or assumptions. Haven added that he remains the same individual, with the same personality and heart, despite sharing this deeply personal part of his life. During the livestream, Romi Imbelli voiced her support for Haven and admitted that she had long suspected he was gay. She explained that accepting the reality of the situation was emotionally difficult because she feared it would mean losing the relationship they had built together. Imbelli said she wanted to continue loving and supporting Haven while also coming to terms with the truth. She acknowledged that balancing those emotions had been challenging but ultimately believed honesty was the best path forward. Despite the end of their marriage, Imbelli described Haven as her lifelong partner in a different sense, saying they would continue to support one another through life. She expressed affection for him and said his sexual orientation did not change the love and respect she had for him as a person. Haven and Imbelli were married in a private ceremony in Laguna Beach, California, in August 2024. The intimate event was attended by close family members, including Haven’s father, actor Jon Voight. However, his sister, Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie, was reportedly not present at the ceremony. By publicly sharing his story, Haven hopes his experience will encourage greater understanding, acceptance, and compassion for others who are navigating similar personal journeys.

Justice Shahid Karim’s retirement to leave 21 va…

A spokesperson has confirmed that Justice Shahid Karim is currently ranked sixth on the seniority list of judges serving at the Lahore High Court. His position on the seniority roster reflects his extensive judicial experience and years of service within Pakistan’s higher judiciary. According to the spokesperson, Justice Shahid Karim has been hearing cases related to smog prevention and environmental pollution for the past several years. During this period, he has presided over numerous hearings concerning environmental protection, air quality, and measures aimed at reducing the harmful effects of smog, particularly in Punjab. His courtroom has become a focal point for addressing environmental issues that have increasingly affected public health and the quality of life in the province. Justice Karim has been widely recognized for taking an active interest in environmental matters. Under his supervision, various government departments have been directed to implement policies and practical measures to tackle air pollution and improve environmental standards. His hearings have often involved officials from environmental agencies, local governments, industries, and other stakeholders responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The issue of smog has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges in Pakistan, especially during the winter months, when air quality deteriorates significantly due to industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, crop residue burning, and unfavorable weather conditions. Through his judicial oversight, Justice Shahid Karim has consistently emphasized the need for coordinated action among government institutions to protect public health and reduce environmental degradation. The spokesperson further stated that Justice Shahid Karim’s retirement will create another vacancy in the Lahore High Court. Following his retirement, the total number of vacant judicial positions at the court will rise to 21. This increase in vacancies is expected to place additional pressure on the existing judges, who already manage a heavy workload involving thousands of pending civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative cases. Judicial vacancies are a matter of concern because they can contribute to delays in the disposal of cases and increase the burden on the remaining members of the bench. Legal experts have frequently stressed the importance of filling vacant judicial positions promptly to ensure timely access to justice and maintain the efficient functioning of the court system. The retirement of a senior judge such as Justice Shahid Karim is also significant because of the experience and expertise he brings to the judiciary. Over the years, he has handled a wide range of important legal matters, but his role in environmental litigation has particularly distinguished his judicial career. His decisions and observations have highlighted the importance of environmental conservation, sustainable development, and government accountability in addressing pollution-related challenges. With his departure from the bench, authorities are expected to initiate the process of appointing new judges to fill the growing number of vacancies in the Lahore High Court. These appointments will be important in ensuring that the court continues to function effectively and that the backlog of pending cases does not increase further. Justice Shahid Karim’s retirement marks the end of an important chapter in the Lahore High Court’s judicial history. His contributions, particularly in the field of environmental justice and smog control, have had a lasting impact on legal and policy discussions surrounding environmental protection in Pakistan. As the Lahore High Court prepares for this transition, the appointment of qualified judges will be essential to maintaining the efficiency, credibility, and effectiveness of the judicial system.
