Sharmeen Ali, Sunita Marshall, Saima Qureshi urge parents to raise self-sufficient kids

Sharmeen Ali, Sunita Marshall and Saima Qureshi have spoken up about raising self-reliant children. They believe both sons and daughters should learn practical life skills from a young age.

The three actors shared their thoughts on Nida Yasir’s morning show. They agreed that independence has nothing to do with gender. Every child should be able to take care of themselves. Every child should also help around the house.

Sunita brought up safety concerns in cities like Karachi. She said these often limit how freely kids can move outdoors. Even so, she believes parents can still teach independence at home. Simple habits matter, she said. Making the bed. Cooking a basic meal. These small tasks add up over time. She also spoke about extracurricular activities. Her son manages rowing and tuition on his own schedule. That balance, she said, teaches real time management.

Saima, who is raising three sons, shared a similar approach. She has her children handle their own chores. Washing dishes. Making tea. Ironing clothes. If the house needs dusting and help isn’t around, they step in too. Without early discipline, she said, kids won’t develop that habit later.

Sunita added that chores are shared across her household. She takes a turn. Her husband, Hassan, takes a turn. The kids take their own turns too.

Sharmeen agreed with both actors. She said chores should never be split by gender. Working mothers can’t always be present, she pointed out. That means kids need to solve problems on their own. She then reflected on her own journey. Learning to drive after her separation gave her real independence. Now, she wants to pass that same skill on to her 17-year-old daughter.

The conversation also touched on how children are growing up today. The internet, they agreed, has made kids more informed than before. Saima recalled moments when her children corrected her after learning something new online. Sunita shared how her son taught himself detailed history facts from YouTube, long before school covered the same topics.

Even with all this exposure, the actors were clear about one thing. Academics still come first. Screen time and hobbies, they said, should work more like rewards. Boundaries matter, and so does staying involved in a child’s daily life.

Bollywood singer Shaan and Wife buy three luxury flats in Mumbai for Rs4.764 billion

MUMBAI: Bollywood singer Shantanu Mukherjee, popularly known as Shaan, and his wife Radhika Mukherjee have purchased three luxury apartments in Mumbai for a combined price of Rs4.764 billion Indian rupees, according to property registration documents. The three apartments are located on the higher floors of the Palmiera project on Turner Road in Bandra West, one of Mumbai’s most sought-after residential areas. The properties have a combined area of 6,267.87 square feet and come with a total of nine car parking spaces. According to the registration documents, each of the three apartments was purchased for Rs1.588 billion Indian rupees, bringing the total value of the transaction to approximately Rs4.764 billion. The couple also paid a total of Rs270 million in stamp duty on the property purchase. The registrations for the three apartments were completed separately on August 20, 2026. Following the purchase, Shaan and Radhika combined the three individual apartments to create a single, larger residential unit. The registration process for the newly combined residential property was also completed on the same day. The luxury condominium on Turner Road has a connection with Bollywood history. The building previously served as the residence of veteran Bollywood actress Mala Sinha, adding to the property’s prominence within Mumbai’s entertainment and real estate circles. The high-value purchase by Shaan and Radhika comes at a time when Mumbai’s luxury housing market continues to witness significant activity, with high-net-worth individuals and celebrities increasingly investing in premium residential properties in prime locations. Bandra West, where the apartments are situated, is among Mumbai’s most prestigious neighbourhoods and is known for its high-end residential developments, celebrity homes, restaurants and entertainment venues. Properties in the area command some of the highest prices in the city due to their location and limited availability of premium housing. The latest purchase is not the couple’s first major real estate investment. Last year, Shaan and his wife reportedly purchased a luxury bungalow in Pune for around Rs1 billion Indian rupees. Shaan, 54, is one of the well-known voices in the Indian music industry. He has performed numerous Bollywood songs and has also worked as a television presenter and music show host. Over the years, he has established a prominent position in the Hindi music industry. The purchase of three apartments and their subsequent conversion into a single residential unit reflects the growing preference among affluent buyers for customised luxury homes in Mumbai’s prime locations. Such properties offer larger living spaces, privacy and premium amenities while also serving as significant investments in one of India’s most expensive real estate markets. With the latest acquisition, Shaan and Radhika have further expanded their property portfolio, adding another high-value asset to their real estate investments in India.

Ukraine urges faster missile support as envoy pushes for stronger air defences

Ukraine has renewed its appeal for advanced air defence missiles, warning that the country urgently needs stronger protection against Russian ballistic missile attacks before winter arrives. Speaking in Washington, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, said diplomatic efforts to end the war are continuing, but military support remains essential as Russian strikes intensify. Stefanishyna said Ukraine hopes renewed ceasefire discussions with Russia could help bring an end to the conflict before the harsh winter season. However, she stressed that negotiations alone will not protect civilians from the increasing number of missile attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. She said the country urgently requires additional Patriot PAC 3 interceptor missiles to strengthen its air defence system. According to the ambassador, Ukraine is in talks with the Pentagon about obtaining a licence to manufacture Patriot PAC 3 missiles domestically. She acknowledged that such a project would take considerable time, with production possibly beginning anywhere between one and five years after approval. Ukrainian officials are also discussing a long term purchasing arrangement that would allow the country to secure future missile supplies by exchanging production slots with another customer. Stefanishyna revealed that representatives from Raytheon, the company that produces the Patriot air defence system, have already visited Ukraine. She added that Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the PAC 3 interceptor missiles, is preparing to send a team of specialists to the country to explore possible cooperation. Describing the current security situation, the ambassador said Russia has sharply increased its use of ballistic missiles during overnight attacks. She noted that recent waves of strikes have included between 30 and 40 ballistic missiles in a single night. While Ukraine has become more effective at intercepting drones supplied or produced by Russia and Iran, it still lacks enough advanced missile systems to counter large scale ballistic attacks. Stefanishyna said Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to expand missile production while maintaining pressure on Ukrainian cities. She argued that Ukraine has adapted successfully in many areas of the conflict but still requires additional missile defences to protect the population during the coming winter months. The renewed request for military assistance follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the White House earlier this week. During the talks, Zelensky sought greater support for Ukraine’s air defence capabilities while also encouraging a fresh diplomatic effort aimed at ending the war. The ambassador said the latest peace initiative could include a visit to Kyiv by senior United States representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Although no official date has been announced, she said the visit could take place as early as next week if preparations are completed. Stefanishyna also said Zelensky has repeated Ukraine’s proposal for a ceasefire based on the current front lines, with negotiations continuing from that point. She stressed that meaningful progress is needed before winter because colder weather will make both military operations and humanitarian conditions more difficult. The ambassador also addressed reports about her own future in government. She confirmed that she had offered to resign from her position and return to Ukraine to respond personally to corruption allegations related to her financial declarations. Stefanishyna said President Zelensky had not requested her resignation and preferred that she remain in her role. However, she believes returning home is the best way to defend herself and her family against the accusations while the legal process moves forward.

Meghan Markle’s financial reality comes under sc…

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s surprise return to the UK has sparked fresh questions about their financial future, particularly the fate of their lavish Montecito home. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly moving back to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after six years in California. However, the couple are not currently planning to give up their American base. Several reports say they intend to keep their Montecito mansion, which they purchased for about $14.7 million in 2020. (People.com) Despite those reports, speculation about a possible sale has intensified. A recent New York Post report claimed the Sussexes could eventually consider putting the property on the market because of its enormous running costs. The nine-bedroom estate reportedly carries more than $600,000 a year in mortgage payments and property taxes alone, before insurance, security and maintenance are added. Some local real-estate estimates suggest the property could now be worth considerably more than the couple originally paid. (New York Post) The reports come as Harry and Meghan prepare for a major lifestyle change. Their children are expected to attend school in the UK, while the couple will establish a private British home. At the same time, they are expected to retain their California property and their vacation home in Portugal. (AP News) That means the family could potentially be maintaining three properties across two countries. Financial pressure has therefore become part of the conversation surrounding their relocation. Page Six reported that the couple’s annual expenses could reach around $6 million, including staff, security, mortgages and other lifestyle costs. The publication also reported that their previous major entertainment deals have become less lucrative, with Spotify no longer involved and Netflix’s relationship reportedly reduced. (Page Six) However, it is important to separate confirmed information from speculation. There is currently no confirmed public listing showing that the Montecito mansion is officially for sale. In fact, TMZ reported that the couple plans to keep the California property despite their UK move. People has similarly reported that the Sussexes intend to retain the mansion. (TMZ) Another property has faced more direct sale speculation. In early August, The News reported claims that Harry and Meghan could consider selling their Portuguese retreat because of its ongoing costs. Those claims were based on unnamed sources and have not been independently confirmed by the couple. (thenews.com.pk) For Meghan, the situation highlights the challenge of maintaining an expensive international lifestyle while building new income streams. Her As Ever brand remains an important part of her business plans, while Harry continues his charitable work. For now, the Montecito mansion remains in the Sussexes’ hands. Whether it eventually becomes “the one on the chopping block” remains uncertain, but their return to Britain has undoubtedly placed their property portfolio and finances under a much brighter spotlight.

Houthis clash with Yemeni government forces as regional tensions escalate

Fighting between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Yemeni government troops intensified in Taiz province, claiming the life of at least one government soldier and critically injuring another amid fears of a renewed civil war. Yemeni military officials reported that the recent flare-up is part of a broader wave of Houthi assaults across multiple provinces that have killed dozens of government troops over the past week. Concurrently, the Houthis claimed responsibility for a drone attack targeting a Saudi Aramco oil refinery in Jazan, marking the second reported strike on the facility following an incident last weekend that caused a localized fire. The military escalation coincides with a Houthi-announced blockade on Saudi maritime shipping, further threatening crucial red sea trade corridors. In response to regional instability, the US Navy directed the USS George Washington to deploy toward the Middle East, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln following reported operational strains and crew welfare concerns aboard the long-deployed carrier.

Noor Hassan’s Pakistan exit remark sparks fury

Pakistani actor Noor Hassan has sparked a heated discussion on social media after sharing a post about his decision to leave Pakistan. The actor, who has built a strong reputation through several popular television dramas, recently took to Instagram to share a picture along with a caption suggesting that he found greater peace after moving away from his home country. His remark quickly caught the attention of social media users, with many interpreting it as a criticism of the conditions in Pakistan. The statement has since generated a wide range of reactions, reflecting the growing debate among Pakistanis about life opportunities, security, freedom and quality of living. Some users strongly criticised Hassan for speaking negatively about Pakistan after gaining recognition and success in the country’s entertainment industry. They argued that celebrities who achieve fame locally should not publicly portray the country in a negative manner. Others, however, defended the actor and said his statement should be viewed in the context of the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens. They pointed to concerns surrounding economic pressures, limited opportunities, governance issues and what they described as a lack of basic rights. Several commenters also connected Hassan’s remarks to the broader issue of brain drain, arguing that many skilled professionals and young people consider moving abroad because they believe they can find better career prospects and living conditions elsewhere. The contrasting reactions have turned the actor’s social media post into a wider conversation about whether leaving Pakistan necessarily means rejecting one’s homeland or simply seeking a more peaceful and stable life. Noor Hassan is known for his performances in a number of well-known television projects, including Humsafar, Maat, Muqaddar, Meer Abro and Aseer Zadi. He has also received appreciation for his recent performance in the drama Noor Jahan. While some viewers continue to disagree with his remarks, others believe the discussion highlights genuine frustrations experienced by people who are considering opportunities outside Pakistan.

FIFA turmoil deepens as senior official Lamour exits

FIFA’s internal tensions have deepened after senior executive Kevin Lamour left the organisation, weeks after publicly criticising President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to sell part of the governing body’s commercial rights. FIFA confirmed on Monday that Lamour’s working relationship with the organisation had ended on August 17, bringing an abrupt close to the tenure of a senior official who had once been part of Infantino’s inner circle. “FIFA can confirm that the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer has ended,” a FIFA spokesperson said. The organisation thanked Lamour for his service but offered no further explanation. Lamour joined FIFA’s senior leadership team in November 2024. He had previously supported Infantino’s campaign for the FIFA presidency in 2016. His departure comes after he openly attacked a proposal to create a commercial subsidiary worth around $20 billion and sell as much as a 20% stake to private equity investors. The plan was designed to raise an estimated $4.2 billion. Lamour criticised the proposal last month, saying FIFA employees had been “deceived” about the plan and describing it as “the project of one person”. He also questioned whether FIFA’s leadership was putting personal interests ahead of football’s wider interests. The controversy intensified after Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino, resigned in protest and described the proposed deal as a bad arrangement for football. Infantino subsequently withdrew the proposal. However, the backlash has continued and has increasingly raised questions about Infantino’s bid for a fourth term as FIFA president. Infantino’s Reelection Faces Growing Opposition Infantino’s reelection, once widely regarded as almost certain, now faces a stronger challenge. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have all expressed concerns and recently called for an independent review of Infantino’s conduct. At the same time, several national football associations have questioned whether they should support another term. The Scottish Football Association has already said it will not back Infantino in next year’s election. The dispute has also moved into FIFA’s governance structures. Human rights organisation FairSquare has asked FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee to rule Infantino ineligible for another presidential term, arguing that FIFA’s rules limit presidents to three terms. Infantino, however, has maintained that his initial period in office from 2016 to 2019 should not count because he completed an interrupted mandate following the resignation of former president Sepp Blatter. He was elected in 2016 and subsequently won uncontested elections in 2019 and 2023. FairSquare director Nicholas McGeehan said the organisation’s complaint presented evidence of what he described as a breach of FIFA’s rules. Former FIFA Governance and Review Committee head Miguel Maduro also backed the complaint, arguing that term limits were a central part of reforms introduced to prevent excessive concentration of power. The dispute now places FIFA under increasing scrutiny ahead of next year’s presidential election. While Infantino retains support from the African and South American confederations, opposition from influential football bodies in Europe, Asia and North and Central America could make his path to another term considerably more difficult. With Lamour’s departure adding to the controversy surrounding FIFA’s leadership, pressure on Infantino is likely to remain intense as football’s governing body approaches a crucial election year.
