PTI vows no compromise over Imran Khan’s health …

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan has strongly criticised restrictions on meetings with former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, saying the party will continue its legal, constitutional and political efforts to protect his health and fundamental rights.

Speaking on Tuesday, Jan said the presence of a large number of PTI parliamentarians outside the Supreme Court reflected the party’s determination to ensure that Imran Khan receives proper medical care and access to his family and doctors.

He described reports about the former prime minister’s health as deeply concerning and said denying him his constitutional and legal rights was unacceptable. Jan alleged that Imran Khan had been kept in detention through what the PTI considers politically motivated cases.

The minister said PTI would not remain silent and would continue pressing for appropriate medical treatment, access to personal physicians and meetings with family members. He particularly criticised the reported denial of permission for Imran Khan’s sisters to meet him, calling the restrictions a violation of constitutional and legal rights as well as court directives.

Jan said KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had already warned that PTI lawmakers would gather outside Adiala Jail on Thursday if Imran Khan’s sisters were again prevented from meeting him.

Meanwhile, speaking to a private television channel on Monday, Afridi said the party had been left with little choice but to protest after its concerns were allegedly ignored by authorities. He rejected accusations that PTI was deliberately promoting unrest, arguing that protests would not have been necessary if the party’s grievances had been addressed.

Afridi claimed that Imran Khan was being held unlawfully and was being denied access to his family, lawyers and personal doctors. He said PTI had exhausted available constitutional and legal avenues and would therefore continue with peaceful demonstrations.

The chief minister maintained that peaceful protest was a constitutional right and urged authorities to listen to the party’s concerns.

    Pakistan raises power tariff by Rs0.75 per unit

    Pakistan’s power regulator has approved a Rs0.75 per unit increase in electricity prices for consumers across the country under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the revised tariff applies to the June 2026 monthly fuel cost adjustment. The increase will also affect consumers of K-Electric, with the additional charges appearing in August electricity bills. Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a Rs1.20 per unit increase for June’s adjustment. However, after reviewing the proposal, NEPRA approved a lower increase of Rs0.75 per unit. The latest adjustment follows another tariff hike announced for May, when electricity prices increased by Rs0.34 per unit under the same monthly adjustment mechanism. Monthly fuel cost adjustments allow authorities to revise electricity tariffs based on fluctuations in fuel prices and the cost of power generation. These revisions can either increase or reduce consumer bills depending on changes in generation expenses.

  • PCB issues NOCs to Pakistani cricketers for overseas leagues

    Lahore – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to national cricketers to participate in overseas leagues. The PCB has issued NOCs to Hasan Nawaz, Hunain Shah, Naseem Shah and Usman Khan to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). In addition, Muaz Sadaqat, Sahibzada Farhan, Sufiyan Muqeem and Shadab Khan have also been granted permission to participate in the CPL. The NOCs have been issued for the period from August 19 to September 21. Spinner Nauman Ali has been granted an NOC to play for Lancashire County until September 27 while wicketkeeper-batter Muhammad Haris has received an NOC for the CPL from August 7 to September 20. Mystery spinner Usman Tariq has been permitted to play in the CPL from August 8 to September 18 while Usama Mir has been issued an NOC for the CPL from August 7 to September 21.

    Maryam says PML-N remains most popular party

    LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) continues to enjoy strong public support in Punjab, across Pakistan and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, attributing the party’s popularity to its development agenda and governance. She made the remarks during a meeting with Members of the Punjab Assembly, Asif Malik and Zafar Abbas Khan, who discussed political developments, constituency matters and ongoing development projects in Khushab. During the meeting, the lawmakers briefed the chief minister on issues being faced by residents of their constituency. Maryam assured them that the provincial government would take steps to resolve public problems and continue implementing development initiatives across the district. The lawmakers congratulated the chief minister on the party’s performance in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and appreciated the Punjab government’s decision to introduce electric bus services in Khushab. They also thanked her for providing electric buses to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying the initiative had improved public transport and benefited thousands of commuters. Maryam said Punjab was leading the country in development and governance, adding that improvements had been made in multiple sectors, including public services and law and order. She expressed confidence that the province and the country would continue progressing under the leadership of PML-N President Nawaz Sharif. The lawmakers praised the provincial government’s development record, saying the electric bus service had become a popular facility for daily passengers travelling between General Bus Stand Khushab, Garot Chowk, Mitha Tiwana and Mangwal. Separately, on the occasion of Police Martyrs Day, the chief minister paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. She praised their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, extremism and crime, and acknowledged the courage and resilience of their families. Maryam said the Punjab government was committed to supporting the families of fallen police officers by providing educational opportunities, healthcare, housing and other welfare facilities for their children. She added that the government was strengthening the Punjab Police by providing modern weapons, improved communication systems, protective equipment and bulletproof vehicles to enhance law enforcement capabilities.

    PSX jumps 2,100 points on global optimism

    The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a strong rally at the start of trading on Wednesday, with investors returning to the market after signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East lifted global sentiment. The benchmark KSE-100 Index climbed by more than 2,100 points during the opening session, reflecting renewed optimism among market participants. By around 9:30am, the KSE-100 Index was trading at 179,216.20 points, registering a gain of 2,132.98 points, or 1.20 percent, compared with the previous close. Market analysts attributed the sharp recovery to encouraging remarks from officials in Qatar and the United States, which strengthened expectations that diplomatic efforts could help prevent further escalation of the Iran conflict. The improved global outlook encouraged investors to increase buying in key sectors of the local market. The rally was broad-based, with significant buying interest recorded in automobile assemblers, cement manufacturers, commercial banks, fertiliser companies, oil marketing firms, power generation companies and refineries. Among the major gainers were heavyweight stocks such as Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Mari Energies (MARI), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), MCB Bank, Meezan Bank (MEBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL), all of which traded in positive territory during the early session. Investor confidence also received support from reports that Pakistan has approached China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan. According to reports, the financing is expected to be finalised later this month after both sides complete negotiations on the terms and conditions. Market participants believe the move could help strengthen Pakistan’s external financing position and provide support to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The strong opening followed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, when the stock market closed significantly lower after investors engaged in widespread profit-taking. Although the KSE-100 Index had reached an intraday high of 178,768.83 points, selling pressure emerged later in the session as traders locked in gains following Monday’s impressive rally. Global financial markets also contributed to the positive sentiment. Asian equities advanced sharply after strong corporate earnings in the United States and continued enthusiasm for technology stocks pushed Wall Street to fresh record highs. Investors were further encouraged by hopes that diplomatic efforts would help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, easing concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies and putting downward pressure on oil prices and bond yields. Japan’s Nikkei index surged around 3 percent, while South Korea’s benchmark gained more than 4 percent. The broader MSCI Asia-Pacific Index outside Japan also posted strong gains, with Chinese blue-chip shares moving higher as investors welcomed improving market sentiment across the region. In the United States, stock futures remained stable after the S&P 500 reached another record high. However, trading in some technology stocks remained mixed. Chipmaker AMD declined in after-hours trading despite reporting earnings that exceeded analysts’ estimates, as investors had anticipated even stronger results. Concerns also persisted over the heavy capital spending required to support artificial intelligence infrastructure, with rising borrowing costs continuing to weigh on parts of the technology sector.
