Listen to that faint mechanical whir-click as the laser reads the track. We live in an era where a glass smartphone screen gives you instant access to 100 million songs. And when one chooses to carry around a plastic disc player, it feels less like a modern inconvenience and more like a heroic act of rebellion.

Well! In order to figure out why Gen Z is suddenly obsessing over vintage music players that take up actual pocket space, we have to look at the wild journey of how we got here.

The Boombox & Tape Era

Back in 1979, the original Sony Walkman fundamentally changed society by letting people walk down the street with their own personal soundtrack playing on magnetic cassette tape. It was revolutionary, even if you occasionally had to fix a tangled tape using a No. 2 pencil.

The Silver Disc Reign

By the late 80s and 90s, the CD player (affectionately nicknamed the Discman, though brands like Goodmans ruled the market too) took over. Suddenly, music was crisp, digital and skip-resistant. The condition that provided your player had a reliable 45-second anti-shock buffer and you didn’t jump off while walking! Albums came with jewel cases, actual artwork and fold-out lyric booklets you could read on the bus.

The MP3 Tidal Wave

The early 2000s crushed physical media into tiny digital files. The iPod and cheap MP3 players meant you could hoard thousands of low-bitrate songs in your pocket. They effectively killed off the concept of buying an album just to listen to it as a cohesive story.

The Infinite Streaming Void

Today, platforms like Spotify and Apple Music serve us endless music on demand.  Every track on Earth is accessible with a single tap. That’s why music easily morphs into background noise rather than a meaningful event.

The Retro Revival

You’d think the generation born into high-speed Wi-Fi would turn their noses up at retro tech. However, physical music sales among young listeners are skyrocketing. It turns out that living entirely online gets exhausting. The antique way of listening to music hits differently for a few fun reasons. Spotify’s algorithm loves to push you into a hyper-specific mood bubble. On the other hand, physical disc into a portable player forces you to listen to an entire album from track 1 to track 20 the way the artist intended. On top, there are no skips, no ads, no doomscrolling while listening. There is a joy in pressing actual spring-loaded plastic buttons instead of tapping a flat screen. The mechanical clicks, volume dials and tangled headphone wires bring a sensory connection. In my opinion, a digital app just can’t match. In the subscription economy, you don’t own anything. If a streaming platform loses licensing rights, your favorite album vanishes overnight. A physical CD on your shelf, however, is yours forever.

Now, let’s be honest! Pulled-out wired earbuds connected to a metallic silver CD player looking like straight out of Y2K sci-fi is an undeniable aesthetic flex.

    Imagine living on a world where the start of the day and the end of the day aren’t just different times, but entirely different environments. On one horizon, morning arrives in a chilly mist where vaporized rocks might condense into glittering, mineral clouds. On the opposite horizon, evening sets in as a roaring, hyper-heated furnace hot enough to shred water molecules into raw hydrogen and oxygen. This isn’t sci-fi world-building, it is the reality of WASP-121 b, an extreme exoplanet located roughly 850 light-years from Earth. Astronomers analyzing data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered unprecedented details about this distant world, proving for the first time that its morning and evening twilight zones are fundamentally different from one another. A World Locked in Perpetual Extremes WASP-121 b belongs to a class of cosmic objects known as hot Jupiters: giant gas planets that orbit extraordinarily close to their parent stars. Because of this extreme proximity, the planet is tidally locked. Just as the Moon always presents the same face to Earth, WASP-121 b always presents the exact same hemisphere to its star. One side endures an unrelenting, eternal day with scorching temperatures topping 2,500 degrees Celsius (4,500 degrees Fahrenheit). The opposite side faces permanent night, staring into cold space. For years, astrophysicists hypothesized that the narrow transition zones between day and night. The planet’s terminators might harbor complex, asymmetrical weather patterns. However, confirming this required measuring subtle variations in starlight as the planet passed in front of its star. How Jet Streams Reshape Alien Skies Using JWST’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), researchers tracked how starlight filtered through different parts of WASP-121 b’s atmosphere. The findings revealed a dramatic contrast between the morning transition and the evening transition. The driver behind this strange weather is a planetary-scale jet stream. Superheated air on the dayside doesn’t stay still; it rushes toward the cooler nightside at extreme speeds. Because the planet rotates toward the east, these violent winds carry thermal energy around the globe and dump the bulk of that heat directly into the evening region. As a result, WASP-121 b’s evening atmosphere grows significantly hotter than its morning counterpart. Heat causes gases to expand, puffing up the evening sky like a inflated balloon. When starlight filters through this swollen atmospheric layer, it reveals an environment so fierce that water molecules cannot survive intact. Clouds of Metal and Torn Molecules In the searing furnace of the evening sky, chemical bonds break. Water vapor brought in from the dayside is torn apart by the heat, leaving behind a sky depleted of chemical stability. As those same winds continue their journey around the cold nightside, the atmosphere gradually cools down. By the time the air sweeps around to form the morning twilight, the story flips. Here, temperatures drop enough for chemical compounds to reassemble. Scientists suspect that in this cooler morning zone, minerals such as silicates condense out of the gas phase. Instead of water clouds like those on Earth, WASP-121 b’s morning sky likely features reflective clouds made of liquid rock or iron droplets. These metallic clouds block radiation from deeper layers, making the morning side appear even cooler to space observatories. A New Era of Exoplanet Meteorology Until recently, studying alien worlds meant treating entire planets as single, uniform points of light. This discovery demonstrates that modern space telescopes can resolve climate dynamics across distinct regions of a world hundreds of light-years away.   By capturing the contrast between a planet’s morning and evening, astronomers are moving from simply discovering exoplanets to mapping their active weather systems. WASP-121 b may be far too hostile for life as we know it, but understanding its violent atmospheric currents brings us one step closer to reading the skies of smaller, cooler, and potentially habitable worlds in the future.

    LAHORE – Health experts say that if you want to live up to 100 years, you should adopt some important habits that most people tend to overlook. A study published last week claimed that the maximum possible human lifespan could reach 194 years. Scientists at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow say that if researchers can discover a way to limit cell death associated with aging, the human body may be able to function healthily for a longer period. Lifestyle factors cannot stop the natural biological aging process but they can help protect the body’s cells from premature death. The result may be not only a longer life but also a healthier and more active one. According to Dr. Claire Neyland, a general practitioner associated with the Preventive Healthcare Clinic (HOOQE), the real goal of longevity is not simply to add more years to life but to maintain a healthy and fulfilling life during old age. Dr. Neyland says planning for a long and healthy life should not begin at the age of 50 or 60. It is never too early to prepare for the future. By adopting healthy habits today, people can lay the foundation for a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life as they grow older. She said that eating a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep and exercising regularly are not the only things that matter. There are also some lesser-known but highly important daily habits that adults of all ages should incorporate into their routines. She explained that people generally spend most of their time sitting on chairs rather than on the floor. Sitting on the floor may help strengthen the lower body while also improving flexibility and balance. Moving from a sitting position on the floor to standing is a simple movement but it can quietly indicate whether the body is aging in a healthy way. On average, a person spends around 10 hours sitting each day which can have negative effects on the thigh bones, hip joints and pelvic-floor muscles. Sitting on the floor and getting back up requires leg strength, hip flexibility, balance and physical coordination. If these abilities are not regularly used, they can gradually weaken with age. People who maintain these abilities generally remain more independent and have a lower risk of falling. Falls are among the major causes of hospitalization and even death among older adults. According to Dr. Neyland, this habit can easily be incorporated into everyday life. For example, people can sit on the floor while watching television, play with children on the floor or do stretching exercises while sitting on the floor. If it is safe, they can also practise standing up without using their hands for support. Even performing this exercise a few times a day may help maintain mobility, flexibility and agility as the body ages.

    Protein rich foods such as cereals coffee water and many other products have become increasingly popular. However a new study suggests that for many people eating less protein instead of more may actually be better for overall health and could even help people live longer. The review published on July 31 in the journal Cell Press Blue examined more than 350 scientific studies exploring the connection between lower protein intake and healthy aging. Researchers found that reducing protein intake may improve metabolism help cells respond better to nutrients lower cell damage and support normal cell function. Together these effects may promote better health and a longer lifespan. The study’s lead author Dudley Lamming said that protein is important for people who exercise regularly because it helps build muscle and improves workout results. However he added that most people are not very physically active which means they may be eating more protein than their bodies actually need. In some cases this could have negative effects on health. Experts also noted that the right amount of protein is different for everyone.  It depends on factors such as age overall health physical activity and lifestyle. They recommend following a balanced diet and getting advice from a healthcare professional before making major changes to protein intake.
